Another data point for debian 4.1 jessie preempt-rt on i686: I got a debian 8.1 (jessie) iso from: http://cdimage.debian.org/debian-cd/current-live/i386/iso-hybrid and installed on a lenovo SL410 laptop. Using zsync is very convenient. I use xfce but several desktops isos are provided:
