I always made it my responsibility (the owner of product)  to ensure that the
max config was tested, including cables.
 
I find that most lab techs won't remind you of this, once you have arrived
with your equipment, either they don't have the heart to tell you, or don't
want to upset a customer. 
You need to find a good lab manager who will tell you ahead of time.
 
In this system picture enclosed (87k) , you will see a lot of cables used for
the test.
In all, there were over 150 cables, about 10m or longer in length each., over
1 mile of cables !
 
I could have configured with less card density but I wanted to ensure worse
case config so that no customer could challenge it.
 
Even when your products offer different lengths of cables to the customer, you
need to consider worse case, whether you choose the longest or a length which
is related to wavelength that creates worse case.
