A new approach to immunity testing using a function-based analysis - CISPR
35 reaches the first voting stage. Martin Wright

Martin will describe the approach adopted for assessing immunity testing for
multi-media equipment where a laptop computer is also a music player,
camera, television and telecom terminal. This approach looks at the
performance of individual functions - display, data storage, image capture,
tuner, etc.

Martin first became involved in EMC in 1981 when working at CERN looking at
interference into particle accelerator beams in proton-antiproton colliders.
Following this he joined Raychem and worked on protection devices, mainly in
the area of EMP, HIRF and lightning protection but also working on neutron
and gamma ray effects.
After 5 years he moved into commercial EMC with BT in 1987. He has
represented BT at the ITU-T, CENELEC,WHO and the IEC in a number of chairman
and secretary roles in these organisations. He was appointed as inaugural
chairman of CISPR I in 2001 when it was formed by combining CISPR-E and
CISPR-G and is currently Chairman of CISPR/I and Vice Chairman of the CISPR.

The trials and tribulations of trying to produce EMC standards. Brian
Jones.
Brian will describe some recent problems in getting some EMC standards to
the voting stage, and how even when a standard is published, it doesn't mean
everyone can relax. Expect to hear stories of standardisation of PLT, ITE,
multimedia and the text of amendments missing when they should be included,
and included when they shouldn't be.

Brian is an independent EMC consultant offering advice and training to
companies of all sizes, worldwide, and an EMC laboratory assessor for UKAS.

He is a member of the EMC, lightning protection and ESD committees of the
British Standards Institution, and is the Secretary of the European EMC
committee CENELEC TC210.
For six years (until they ran out of money) he was EMC consultant to the
UK's Department for Business, Innovation and Skills and assisted them in
transposing the EMC Directive 2004/108/EC into UK Law.
Brian is a Chartered Engineer and a member of the IEEE, and the Institution
of Engineering and Technology.

Product emission classification - separating Class A from Class B - is there
an inconsistency? Stephen Colclough

Manufacturers are faced with differing definitions of environments for Class
A and Class B operation of products in some of the CISPR product standards.
The supposedly corresponding generic standards do not mention classes, but
have different definitions of environments again.
For some products, more than one standard applies, such as a PC monitor with
a tuner, where CISPR 13 and 22 apply. Under CISPR 22, the monitor could be
either Class A, or Class B. However, under CISPR 13 there is only one
limit, which is effectively Class B.
How should manufacturers decide which limits to apply in these situations?
Can they declare Class A in monitor mode? Should CISPR take steps to
resolve the apparent inconsistencies in the standards and what would the
impact be?

High-level overview of the R&TTE Directive and its Essential Requirements
and the integration of a pre-approved module into a non-radio product. Simon
Hindle
With the proliferation of low power radio technologies we are seeing many
'non radio' products now incorporating a radio chipset or radio module. From
Electricity Meters to Blood Pressure Monitors, Training Shoes to
Toothbrushes.... everything's going RF.

The question is "As a manufacturer what are the consequences of integrating
a radio on my compliance strategy?" Examples provided and questions
answered.

Simon Hindle PhD BEng. (Hons)
Graduating with a PhD and 1st class honours degree in Electronics and
Communications Simon enables the integration of radio solutions into a very
wide variety of products.

Working in the radio industry for the majority of his career Simon has an in
depth knowledge of radio design and parameters which ensures TRaC customers
get the guidance they require. He develops the compliance strategies
required in order to place their wireless and radio products onto the
market, using the TRaC approvals team to gain access to the major regulatory
domains of Europe, North America and Asia.
