Although I am also a sales rep (and an engineer!) I agree with the fact
that a preamp and or pr- selector can make a considerable improvement to
the SA's performance. Schaffner/Chase's preselector was designed especially
to work with all SA's and particularly the Advantest.

I am experienced in performing pre-compliance measurements with a spectrum
analyzer and preamp. I use a Hewlett Packard 8593EM Spectrum Analyzer and
an HP 8447D Pre-Amplifier with god results. As mentioned by another
responder, the spectrum analyzer is designed to function as an EMI
The kind of preselector associated with a receiver, or a high end analyzer
like the HP8566 has a tunable front end that tracks the analyzer tuned
frequency. This will solve your problem, but at great cost, plus I don't
know of one that would work with your analyzer. The after-market kind of

We use an HP spectrum analyzer that allows you to program in the factors
including pre-amps. Without a pre-amp, our noise floor would render our
measurements useless, even in our semi-anechoic chamber. The noisefloor
drops with the addition of the preamp when the preamp factors are
