Re: [PSES] Neat Funny Stories regarding EMI

2018-03-23 Thread Robert Johnson

Another CB radio story.

If you remember, the big game was best distance. One operator out in
Ohio had attached a linear, a roof antenna with rotor and was talking at
quite a distance to someone down in the river valley. With the rotor he
could simulate fading and such. He claimed he was mobile using the
classic fender mounted whip antenna and said one day he had come from
the hardware store with one of the copper float balls for a toilet
valve. He was standing beside the antenna listening to the radio and
when he touched the float to the whip and it boosted his reception. He
claimed to mount it on the end of the whip and the capacitive loading
greatly improved performance. CB operators were a pretty naive and
gullible group. Shortly the hardware stores were out of toilet floats as
they started appearing on the ends of whip antennas. The exercise ended
after someone turning a corner took out the windshield of a passing car.

Hi Charles,

My story is somewhat similar. When I was a young lad living in Wisconsin I got
hooked on CB radio (before the Hey Good Buddy craze ruined it). I had a 5
channel Johnson Messenger I with a whole 5 watts output and a 1/4 wave dipole
on the garage roof. Not satisfied with talking to the locals, I bought a 1 kW
linear amp for it. Very early one Sunday morning I was talking skip to some
guys in Louisiana. Apparently it woke up the neighbors across the street. The
father came over complained to my mother. Asked what he was talking about, he
explained that they could hear me on their console stereo/record player in
their living room. And it was turned off! I was booming into their living room
loud enough to get them out of bed. And telling tall stories about something or
other. Don't recall the details of my skip talk but surely still remember my
first encounter with EMI. Been playing at EMI ever since.

Charles,

I remember attending an amateur radio club meeting in the 1970s, and
someone brought their new Altair 8080 personal computer - a new device for
the tech savvy!

His demonstration involved placing an AM radio next to the computer, then
toggle-switch programming a long sequence into the computer. When he was
done, he pressed the 'Run' switch, and the AM radio emitted a sequence of
squeals imitating The Beatles song 'The Fool On The Hill'. I guess this
was a case of intentional EMI.

Re: [PSES] Neat Funny Stories regarding EMI

2018-03-23 Thread Doug Powell
Charles,

Hope you are well.

Although not directly about EMC or laboratory practices and the like, take
a look into RF lotions, creams and gels not for ultrasound. For example
Facial Radiofrequency Gel with anti-aging RF treatment. I can't exactly
tell if they are trying to prevent or enhance RF. Possibly something like
the old radium treatments? There are some pretty amazing health claims
being made which in my view are unverifiable.

Second, there was the phenomenon in the audiophile crowd who believe gold
plated contacts and high quality wiring in an AC power cable is all you
need reduce RF interference. As I recall one company advertised that it
could eliminate all RF interference. Here is one article along that line:
http://www.empiricalaudio.com/computer-audio/technical-papers/myths-and-snake-oil

Finally what I consider is the best. In the EMC Journal, March 2010, was an
article on "Feng Shui in the anechoic chamber", starting on page 5 of
http://www.compliance-club.com/pdf/Issue87.PDF, I take this to be a
humorous article but who knows, maybe the author was a little serious. I
think the potted plant and the water feature would be a very nice touch for
all such labs.

All the best, Doug

The landing gear system of P-51s were electrically quite noisy and got into
the intercom system. Someone decided that should be cleaned up, and that
was accomplished adding various filters to culprits/victims. When the
modified planes were test flown the first time, there was an unending stream
of profanity from the test pilot to the control tower. Seems the pilot had
gotten used to hearing the various solenoids and motors engaging/disengaging
and correlated that with proper operation of the landing gear system. In the
total absence of any such sounds, he had no feedback that the landing gear
was operating properly. When the tower point out the control panel ³idiot²
light indicated proper operation, that simply initiated a new and more
vituperative flow of profanity as the pilot had no faith in a light compared
to actually hearing the landing gear in operation.

Sometimes we can do our jobs too well.
