afternoon open technical event on: Various topics

Hosted at Kings College London (KCL) http://www.kcl.ac.uk/ Strand Campus,
Central London.

On Wednesday 10th December 2014.

Afternoon open technical event.

Room location: Strand Campus, Room K-1.56 Main King's Building

Time 13:15 - 16:45

Afternoon Meeting Agenda.

13:15 - 13:20 Welcome. Alan Warner Chair IEEE EMC Soc UK and Ireland.

13:20 - 14:00 In-vehicle exposure to low frequency magnetic fields. Dr.
Alastair Ruddle, Computational Electromagnetics Specialist, MIRA Ltd.

The need to assess the possible exposure of vehicle occupants to low
frequency magnetic fields is an emerging vehicle design requirement that is
of particular significance for vehicles with electrical powertrains. This
paper outlines the nature of the potential threats, methods for their
evaluation, and practical mitigation measures that could be adopted to limit
occupant exposure.

14:00 - 14:30 Paper to be confirmed

14:30 - 14:40 Update briefing on the transition dates for the new EMC
Directive and Radio Equipment Directive. Brian Jones BSc. (Hons) C Eng MIET
SMIEEE, EMC Consultant

A clarification of implementation dates and validity of Declarations of
Conformity

14:40 - 15:10 Break.

15:10 - 15:20 Briefing presentation on the next Chapter meeting at
Baldock Monitoring Station scheduled for 25th March 2015. Neville Wain,
Ofcom.

15:20 - 16:00 The Radio Equipment Directive and spectrum policy in the UK
Dave Donachie, Project Manager R&TTED/RED, Ofcom.

16:00 - 16:40 Electromagnetic compatibility below 150 kHz - is there a
solution? John Ryan, Consultant,

At the last presentation on this topic in 2012 a solution to the issue of
corruption of meter readings, a serious matter because these are subject to
legal metrology, had been instituted, but other identified conflicts,
including inverters/AICs, low-energy lighting and aging of filter capacitors
remain largely unresolved. Such disturbances are mainly conductive and all
too often involve new energy efficient technologies and renewable energy
sources. This presentation looks at the current situation - suggestions for
solutions welcome! CENELEC FprTR 50627 is under vote with a deadline of 5th
December and gives many examples of measurements on similar interference
cases.

16:45 Finish

 Après-meeting.

The meeting will be followed by optional Après-meeting networking at a
London pub:
The Marquess of Anglesey http://www.themarquess.co.uk/ Location: 39 Bow
Street, WC2E 7AU http://www.themarquess.co.uk/find-us

Eight minutes walk (0.4m) from Kings College. More details if required at
the meeting.

Ice skating is also on offer next door in Somerset House courtyard.

Information available on speakers:

Alastair Ruddle has been with MIRA Limited since 1996, working primarily on
the use of numerical modelling methods to investigate electromagnetic issues
for automotive and other applications. Specific areas of interest include
EMC, installed performance of antennas, and human exposure to
electromagnetic fields, as well as associated test and measurement methods.

Brian Jones is an independent EMC Consultant. For the past two years his
major customer has been the European Commission, whom he advises on the
suitability of candidate harmonised standards for listing in the Official
Journal of the European Union. He is speaking here in a personal capacity.

Dave Donachie is Project Manager, R&TTED and RED in the Spectrum Technology
Policy Team in Ofcom.

John Ryan is a consultant to the Energy Networks Association on powerline
carrier issues. Following his graduation from Imperial College he began his
career with EMI Central Research Labs where he remained for nearly 30 years,
working at various times on computer memories, remote terminals, data
communications, X-ray computed tomography image reconstruction and finally
powerline carrier systems. He joined the Electricity Association is 1994 and
became a part-time consultant for the Energy Networks Association in 2003.
He is a former Secretary to TC 210, an expert on TC 210/WG11, Secretary of
CENELEC SC205A and the CENELEC/ETSI JWG on EMC of Networks.
