Re: [Emc-users] Meanwell SE600-48 Power Supply

2021-07-19 Thread Alan Condit
Well after playing with it for a couple of hours on the bench, the fan would
start reliably on power on. I let it sit for a couple of hours and it still
started on power on. So, I bolted it back in to the cabinet. When I powered it
on silence except for that click now and then. Lightbulb on. Maybe tightening
it into the cabinet is doing something. So, I loosened up the bolts holding it
in place and voila it would spin up on power on. Making a long story even
longer, it seems the bolts near the fan are just a hair too long and block the
fan from turning. So, I need to find a couple shorter 3mm cap screws.

Thanks for everybody trying to help me solve the problem.

Re: [Emc-users] Meanwell SE600-48 Power Supply

2021-07-19 Thread Thaddeus Waldner
Is it a 3-wire fan?

The yellow wire on those fans is a reverse-acting PWM control line (0 = full
on, 90% = 10% on, etc.). It’s possible that the controller turns off the fan
when it doesn’t need cooling.

I have always used STL files when saving from FreeCAD, they work well
with PyCAM. But PyCAM situation is even worse, the author has been
unresponsive in the last two years and has never fixed the latest
issues, so GenericCAM is more recent, and also it is not limited to 3
axis.

Never used Fusion360 which is commercial and as you say the free
version is limited.

I agree, it is not useful yet and progress is slow. They do have quite a
lot of C++ code written but the last work was added in May 2020 and it
seems there is only one person working on this.

I am also alarmed that they use STL files as input. All the intent is
"gone" when you save as STL. For example, a threaded blind hole is just a
shape made with a thousand triangles and the software would never know to
use a drill and tap. Same with curves, the STL is a list of
straight segments and the software would never know that a curve was
intended.

A better CAM system would start with STEP files. STEP describes geometry,
whereas STL approximates shape using many line segments.

Today a good-enough free CAD is Fusion360 but the free version is limited
to three-axis milling.

2021-07-19 Thread Alan Condit
Gene, Chris, Milosz and everybody who has tried to help,

I am reposting this because I screwed up earlier and failed to change the
Subject line.

I took the power supply out of the controller cabinet and set it up on the
bench. I used a small screw driver to turn the fan a few times, then I turned
it on and the fan ran. Like Milosz said it was loud. I turned it off and turned
it back on again and the fan ran, Great problem fixed (yeah, right). I put it
back in the cabinet and turned it on (silence). So I will take it back out of
the cabinet and see if I can get it to run and start reliably after a period of
rest. Otherwise it looks like replacing the fan is the answer.

Thanks all,
Alan

It runs, and it is pretty but I was unable to get it to load a relatively
simple .stl from openscad, in this case of a pair of ball bearing races,
inner and outer that I'll make on a 3d printer when it arrives from .cz
tomorrow. It locked up trying and had to be killed. But I've not
configured a target machine yet, that menu is a bit confusing to me.

Docs would be helpfull.

printers for this drive projet are turning into black hole$, the heat
needed to print in PETG has now destroyed an ender 3, some chinese thing
about a CR10-S in size, an ender 5 pro, A CR10-S pro v2, and a BIQU BX.
None of them have a printhead capable of doing a steady diet of petg at
235 to 240C. Prusa has a kit that claims to handle to 300C temps, due
here by fedex tomorrow.

I have compiled that code on Ubuntu and it works properly, but you will
have to do some experimental discovery because the documentation is not
exhaustive. The hardest thing is to learn how to define a machine
inside the program by looking at included examples, once that is done
things are smooth enough.

Thank you Andy.

The original link led to a blank project.

I downloaded it, then had to install a bunch of lua5 stuff which led to a
reboot because my microcode was outdated, so while it did then build,
I'm not fully recovered from the reboot as I still have all my ssh
sessions to the other 5 machines to restart. I'll play and report later
as I have a drive project in OpenSCAD aimed at the worthless A axis
supplied with the BBLB 6040 milliing machine, which has turned into a
black hole for money. The list of stuff I've had to replace just to get
a working machine is extensive and includes ALL of the electrics except
the steppers but all the drivers and psu's, including the spindle motor
and VFD. So I'll finish the reboot and look at it, using my drive design
as test input.

Re: [Emc-users] Code of Conduct

2021-07-19 Thread Leonardo Marsaglia
I just read all of this because I've been a little busy.

I think all this CoC just triggered the paranoia some have inside (Wich I
understand and it's not a bad thing if it stays in logical levels). It
really isn't a big deal for me and from what I've red it's the same for
most. I always considered this community 90% anarchic and I don't see a CoC
could change that. I understand the argument but I don't like what
triggered.

I also don't see a bad intention in Jeff's act of publishing this CoC
thing. I can't imagine him, who is one of the devs who started it all,
wanting to see this project to implode. As I said earlier I think this is
more a formality than anything.

But, if this thing is going to make some folks pack their bags and
unsubscribe from this list then I say fuck CoC and please all of us forget
it's there and keep what we were doing before the post was made (which is
mostly what the CoC says apart from that paragraph about the discussions
going away from the original topic which I think it's impossible to satisfy
in the practice and that's why the subjects change as a discussion flows
most of the time).

So far I didn't see any Gestapo or KGB attitude so please don't make this
escalate for nothing...

By the way, I would add a line to the code of conduct: Persons named Andy
Pugh can't resign from the list :)

At the moment the idea of recreating the spindle to be able to do BT30 just
isn't in the cards. I can't even turn decent pulleys that have zero wobble.
I'm not the best machinist I think. And then there's the cost of BT30 tooling.

In reality, AFAIK, the TT Tooling with 3/4" shaft into the R8 collet doesn't
have the strength to hold a 3/4" chuck. It was really meant for smaller mills
and I'm probably pushing it with the 2HP spindle.

You might be able to convert the drill chuck to TTS shank, but
otherwise, yes, that becomes more difficult.

My BT30 spindle uses pull studs, so the pneumatic drawbar can be
lifted out and a conventional drawbar can be used. This isn't as easy
with a TTS as releasing the tool does not release the drawbar and the
keyway stops you from just screwing the collet out from the bottom.
