Cable shields are typically tied to frame/backplane ground. One end
only if you want to avoid ground loops.
The cable shield from your VFD to motor connection should also be tied
to frame/backplane ground.
I don't see a filter on the power feed to that GS2 VFD?Do you have
one? The Automati
t had been broken right off.

One question I had when wiring up the system is I connected the west amp
servo cable _shield_ to the backpanel. Which is also where the VFD is
attached and pretty much everything else would be grounded to that as
well. I was concerned about noise with that...
Should I have attached that to 0Vdc.

You might need to set them in the HAL file rather than "live" when it
is too late.

Is there a way to reset the 5i25/7i77 without restarting Linuxcnc?

a character error is definately electrical noise related, it may have

You set it like any other HAL parameter. Details are there if you look
at man sserial
setp hm2_5i24.0.sserial.port-N.fault-inc 0
Will disable all smart-serial fault reporting.

There are parameters for smartserial that allow you to mask errors.

OK those are all incoming extra character errors, most likely from noise
induced in the DB25 cable (possibly from a ground loop or possibly from
magnetic coupling to nearby noisy power lines)
It must be that they are ignored in 2.6.x (they are not harmful and I dont see

you'd need to do is start the RIP from the command line. No messing

Ok, updated the 7i77 per your instructions. That seemed to work. It got
rid of the messages when 2.7.3 starts up. So far so good,
When I now F2 enable the machine I get a slew of "hm2/hm2_5i25.0: Smart
serial card hm2_5i25.0.7i77.0.0 error = (4) Extra character" each with a
..."error = (13) Com
Thank you! Will try it tomorrow evening.

Stephen,
you should download "Version 14 serial remote I/O card firmware" from
www.mesanet.com, under ANYTHING I/O DAUGHTER CARDS, unzip it, and follow
the README file in sserial/utils/linuxcnc.
So, you will need ssinstall script and a special script, called update7i77
