Yes, I believe it is opened, read, then closed and not used again.

I was able to figure it out, BUT only be scanning the encfs binary for
strings!
This should be in the manual.
It is also good that the file name does not have to end in .xml and can
be ANY filename in any location, to try and further hide what the file
is for. Especially if you h
Try setting ENCFS6_CONFIG ... The environment variable is tied to the
config version so that encfs doesn't have to guess what kind of config
file to read.
