Alright, all changes applied and pushed. You can see the history (for
the time being, that is) on
https://github.com/gnome-design-team/gnome-marketing/commits/master
The main PDF file has been regenerated. When this is all OK'd, I guess
it'll have to be regenerated again with print colors & crop marks and
have a "-web" lightweight version. We need to sort out the
printers/distribution story now.

I was thoroughly distracted by the release notes when a lot of this
was happening, but perhaps we should have had a more definite
announcement of the period for final corrections?

work. To my surprise, the tessellated triangles that form the cover and
back pages' background are not some diagonal line trickery nor are they
a single solid object (ex: a SVG made with Inkscape): they actually are
true geometric objects made directly in Scribus and controlled
individually. Every triangle. All on the same layer (but grouped). Wow!
That must have taken quite a bit of time to create, otherwise I'm very
curious to hear what speedhack/technique was used.

It's this file:
https://github.com/gnome-design-team/gnome-marketing/blob/master/annual-report-2014/cover.svg

Since it's vectors, Scribus can also edit it after import.

Granted, since those are solid colors and Scribus works with a set
palette, it might not be impossible to change them (but if you change
one, you ought to adjust most if not all of them). Perhaps a speedhack
would be to swap colors "in palette" instead of touching the objects.

It's green now. Not super-excellent, but more or less what I had time for.

Re: GNOME Annual Report | Status Update - Layout Complete

2015-09-25 Thread Nuritzi Sanchez
I think we should add a step to the process where we can make minor tweaks
to the report's content after seeing the layout, like proofreading changes
and such.

At work, we usually leave a few rounds for making sure the content looks
good in the design. Part of the reason is that it's one thing to look at
the content in a word doc / wiki page, and another to see it within its
final resting place. Your eye catches things it may not have otherwise, or
you're able to see new areas for improvement once you see how it fits
within the larger context of the whole piece.

Anyway, all of that is to say that I think we should build time into the
annual report process to allow us to make a few tweaks after the layout is
done.

This year's report creation process had unique challenges for many reasons.
We should definitely talk about what went wrong and what went right during
our *annual report retrospective in mid-October* (to be scheduled after we
print copies and send them off!). I'm sure we can find ways to make the
process much smoother for next year, and keep learning each year how to
make it better and better. :)

While its great that we now have a more clear process for the creation of
the report, I also think its important to recognize that there must be room
for improvements and its good for us to reflect on the schedule.

Can state that I for example think its is a very short period of time to
only give the designer 3-4 days to correct the document.

Yeah, I'm aware that textual changes shouldn't happen once sent to
layout; in theory this shouldn't happen (I shouldn't have found
uncaught errors :) but even multiple pairs of eyeballs can let mistakes
slip through, mistakes are human. I had to go sentence by sentence
through the whole thing to spot those (I didn't have the time to do
that in the past two weeks due to other deadlines). Overall it's typos
or typographic fixes. For my own article, it's cosmetic layout fixes.

The Groupon article seems to have changed a bit since I last looked at
it (I was helping with some versions of the draft but not a
proofreader) and I'm not sure if my suggestion on that article is
correct, so I'll check with the others.

So if y'all are fine with the fixes proposed in my previous mail, I'll
do them. Hopefully that would be the last of them.

I was under the impression that the report should correspond to the

2013-2014 would make more sense to me.

Re: GNOME Annual Report | Status Update - Layout Complete

2015-09-22 Thread Oliver Propst
Thanks so much for doing the layout Andreas, looks great.

Think we should aim to have a publish ready version of the report early
next week (which includes minor fixes).

Have started working on a announcement post (available in our WordPress
instance as a draft) which I plan to finish during the weekend.

Thanks everyone who have contributed to the report so far, now let's do the
minor fixes and get the report published!

Sorry, that won't fit. I took the text as handed to me and it would take
time I don't have to replan the layout to make the locations fit.

Also I don't see why FOSDEM isn't spelled in caps here.

Fixed.

PS. Jeff: could you edit it and add your signature to the letter?
If you have any issues, mail the signature to me and I'll edit it.

Sorry for the general delay, and thanks for having the material in

Another quick one:

on page 18 it says 'Accessability' in the header instead of
'Accessibility'.
