It looks like gpgme-json is not available on all Linux distributions
:-(. I created a static build of gpgme-json that is available from:
https://enigmail.net/download/gpgme-json/

Once you enabled the expert option, you have to close the preferences dialog,
and then open the Enigmail menu again. It's the first menu item.

[Enigmail] [ANN] Enigmail v3.0 available

2021-06-05 Thread Patrick Brunschwig
I am happy to announce Enigmail v3.0 for Interlink Mail & News and Postbox.

Please note that Enigmail 3.0 does not support Thunderbird.

Major Changes since v2.1

This release introduces a new backend that allows to use different
OpenPGP implementations. Currently, OpenPGP.js (natively built into
Enigmail) and GnuPG are supported. By default, if GnuPG is found and at
least one private key is available in GnuPG, then GnuPG will be used for
crypto-operations. If GnuPG is not found or seems unused, then
OpenPGP.js will be used. OpenPGP.js is included in Enigmail and does not
require any further downloads.

The OpenPGP.js implementation of Enigmail contains a very simple trust
model. Any new key is trusted by default. If you don't want to trust a
key, you can distrust it (which acts similarly to disabling a key in
GnuPG). I might add something like TOFU in a future version of Enigmail,
but that's not yet decided. If you require a more sophisticated trust
model, you should use the GnuPG backend instead.

Future versions of Enigmail will support additional OpenPGP
implementations, such as SOP. In particular, the current GnuPG backend
that accessed gpg directly will be replaced with functionality that
requires gpgme-json. Enigmail will no longer directly access GnuPG for
crypto- functions.

As explained in [1], there is an assistant to help you migrating your
keys and settings from GnuPG/Enigmail to TB 78. I wrote that piece of
software and labelled it Enigmail 2.2, such that existing users of
Enigmail can smoothly migrate to TB 78 without needing to install
something manually.

Not surprisingly, every piece of software needs some maintenance from
time to time -- that's why you got an update. As long as you don't
uninstall Enigmail, you can expect to receive updates to it from time to
time.

The idea of the box is that, when checked, the account will be
configured to use the new generated key.

As Enigmail is a mail extension, it does not have a function to create
keys for email addresses that you didn't configure in Thunderbird.

I can't give a definitive answer because I'm not a Thunderbird staff
member. But from my POV it's most unlikely that these functions will
ever be implemented. Thunderbird uses RNP, and does not support GnuPG
(apart for some basic functions for signing and decryption). I think
these files are a left-over from the code imported from Thunderbird and
are not used anymore.

Automatic migration has been enabled and re-disabled a few times due to
bugs and problems with TB 78. AFAIK, migration should currently be
enabled, but a low rate.

I can't give a recommendation. But here is a thought: if the Thunderbird
developers would be 100% convinced that everything is perfectly fine,
they would probably push migration more actively and at a higher rate
than they do.

Actually, the Enigmail migrator does exactly what you expected: if you
configured your account to use a key ID, it would set the key ID in
Thunderbird; if you configured your account to use the email address,
then Enigmail would try to find a key with a matching email address. If
such a key is found, then the key ID of that address will be configured
in Enigmail.

This looks like either the wizard did not complete successfully, or none
of the keys have a user ID with that email address.

From your email headers I determine that you're using Thunderbird 78.
Thunderbird 78 contains built-in OpenPGP support -- Enigmail is only
used to migrate your settings.

In other words, I'm sorry, but this has nothing to do with Enigmail
anymore. My best guess is that MDC-protection was not enabled.

If you used the Enigmail migration wizard, it would import all public and
secret keys. But I think that you only imported your own key manually.

To import all your public keys, first export all of them from Kleopatra or
GnuPG, and then import using the OpenPGP key manager.

Yes, that's a possible approach. You won't need Enigmail afterwards anymore.

Sometimes GnuPG waits for a (stale) lock to be released before it would
start to do something. Check if there are running gpg process(es). As
long as you find running instances of gpg.exe, key import will not finish.

Enigmail 2.0.12 works with TB 60. I think that decryption fails because
Enigmail could not handle the User ID of Adele properly. That's what the
exception is about.

This is indeed not supported by Thunderbird. You can still use that
setup, but you'll have to treat the key like a key on a smartcard.

Again, please read the pEp documentation, or ask the pEp people. I'm not
affiliated to pEp, so I won't answer this.

> 2) Can you explain the differences between pEp junior and classic modes?

In Junior mode, there is no visible key management, and almost no
possibility to configure anything. You automatically get a key for all
your accounts, and encryption is done automatically whenever possible.
You don't need to care for it in most ways. Key verfication is done via
a handshake that uses trust words instead of fingerprints. In theory,
there would be key synchronization across devices, but that was not
finished in the pEp engine for Enigmail (AFAIK, it's now available in
pEp). The UI is different than Enigmail.

The main idea of pEp is to provide message security without bothering
the user as much as possible. User should not need to deal with key
management and should not need to care to enable encryption manually.

If you want to know what pEp is, then read the following:
https://www.pep.security/en/faq/

Enigmail 2.0 and 2.1 contains a pEp Junior Mode. In this mode, Enigmail
uses the pEp engine for crypto-operations, and the user interface is
reduced to a very small set of security indicators and dialogs.

As Enigmail will not support TB 78, the pEp developers decided to create
their own add-on from scratch. The add-on is the quasi-continuation of
the pEp Junior Mode. Those who use Enigmail in the pEp Junior Mode are
offered to move to that new pEp for Thunderbird addon instead of being
migrated to OpenPGP in Thunderbird.

The philosophy of pEp is different than the one of Thunderbird. It's
perfectly legitimate that there's more than one solution for encryption.

The Enigmail migrator in TB 78 is only for users of the classical mode
of Enigmail. Users of pEp are offered to install pEp for Thunderbird.
And this is now also prepared in Enigmail for TB 68.

That would be:

[Enigmail] Upgrading info for Thunderbird 78.2

2020-08-24 Thread Patrick Brunschwig
Thunderbird 78.2 will be released soon. With that release, OpenPGP in
Thunderbird is considered complete, and Enigmail users will start to be
upgraded to Thunderbird 78. What does this mean for you:

Together with the upgrade to Thunderbird 78.2, you should obtain a
new version of Enigmail (if not, check for updates in the Addons
Manager).

That new version of Enigmail is only a "Migration Version", which will
assist you with this move.

* If you use the Enigmail/pEp Junior Mode: a web page will be opened
automatically after the upgrade, from where you can download a new pEp
for Thunderbird Plugin (https://pep.software/thunderbird/). This plugin
replaces the Enigmail/pEp Junior mode and migrates all your keys and
settings. The new pEp for Thunderbird plugin is a full installer that
needs to be downloaded and installed on your computer. This new plug-in
will run in Thunderbird 68 and in new Thunderbird 78 versions. It will
work seamlessly with the pEp mobile clients for Android and iOS and
synchronize your keys and settings across all devices automatically.
More info on sync can be found in the documentation section on
https://www.pep.security/

* If you use the Enigmail "classical" mode: a wizard will be opened,
which allows you to transfer your keys and settings to Thunderbird.
Follow the steps in the wizard.

If you want to stick to Enigmail, then you have several options:

a) stick with Thunderbird 68. I will continue to support Enigmail for
Thunderbird 68 at least until the end of 2020. You can disable automatic
upgrading in the Thunderbird options. Please note that at some point you
will no longer receive security fixes for Thunderbird 68.

b) switch to Interlink Mail & News or Postbox. I will continue to
support Enigmail for these two platforms for the foreseeable future.

I did not fork Thunderbird -- I'm not working on Interlink itself. I
simply provide Enigmail for an existing application that attracts more
and more users.

AFAICT, the fork was made by people who disagree, for various reasons,
with Mozilla's decision to abandon XUL.

[Enigmail] [ANN] Enigmail for Interlink Mail & News

2020-08-06 Thread Patrick Brunschwig
I'm happy to announce that Enigmail now officially supports Interlink
Mail & News [1]. Interlink is a Free & Open Source fork of Thunderbird
52 that is actively maintained and independent from Mozilla.

I have ported Enigmail to Interlink. The current stable version 2.1.7 is
now officially available from both the Enigmail home page and the
Interlink Add-ons web site. I plan to support Enigmail for Interlink
beyond the foreseen end-of-life of Enigmail for Thunderbird.

Compared to Enigmail for Thunderbird, the following features are different:
* no support for pEp Junior Mode
* creation of Inline-PGP messages is not possible
* the add-on is not restart-less

I did not port JSUnit to TB 78.

Why do you ask? If you want to run unit tests on Enigmail 2.2 for TB 78,
then I can tell you that there are no unit tests for that version.

I don't have this issue on Debian Linux, using the official version from

[Enigmail] [ANN] Enigmail 2.2 (Migration Version) for Thunderbird 78 available

2020-07-03 Thread Patrick Brunschwig
In preparation for the upcoming release of Thunderbird 78, have released
Enigmail 2.2.

Noteworthy Changes
==
As OpenPGP is now part of Thunderbird, this special version of Enigmail
only serves for migrating the keys and settings from Enigmail/GnuPG to
Thunderbird.

Enigmail 2.2 is only functional if you used Enigmail in Thunderbird 68
or earlier. Therefore, this release will not be available for download
from the Enigmail homepage, but only from addons.thunderbird.net.

As long as you'll continue to use Thunderbird 68, the new version will
not be offered to you -- you can continue to use Enigmail 2.1.x.

Future of Enigmail
==
I will continue to maintain and support Enigmail 2.1.x for Thunderbird
68 until at least Dec. 31, 2020. Depending on the adoption rate of
OpenPGP in Thunderbird 78, I might extend this for some more months.

I will also continue to develop and support Enigmail for Postbox for the
foreseeable time.

As already mentioned several times, I'll continue to support and
maintain Enigmail 2.1.x for Thunderbird 68 for at least 6 months after
the availability of Thunderbird 78. I might extend this for a few more
months, but not more.

As long as TB 78.2 is not released, there is no need to disable updates.
Otherwise you'll miss security and stability updated for TB 68.

In TB 78, the feature set will certainly be smaller than in Enigmail.
But you I expect that future versions of Thunderbird will add more
features to OpenPGP.

No, that's not the point.

First of all, it is very clear to me since the first day of working on
Enigmail that the MPL will allow a company to use the source code,
modify it and publish a non-free version of it without needing to
release the free part. The MPL exists because of Netscape, the former
owner of the Mozilla source code. Netscape published the code under a
license that allowed it to publish its own derivative of the Mozilla
Suite in a non-free manner as they liked (which they did in the past).

There is no point of "being interested in obtaining the free part" for
MPL licensed code - you can't request it.

The Mozilla source code consists of roughly 20 millions lines of code,
and I know almost nothing of that code, apart of some of the APIs it
provides. Whether or not there is something valuable in the Postbox code
is totally irrelevant to me -- I seriously doubt that I would find it.

without the need to publish anything. That is, there no published code.

Postbox adds quite a bit of functionality and design to the user

Enigmail is available for:
* Postbox (https://postbox-inc.com), a commercial product
* Interlink (https://binaryoutcast.com/projects/interlink/), a
community-driven product.

If you did not disable automatic upgrades, you will be upgraded to TB
78.2, which means that you will not have Enigmail anymore. GnuPG will
only be supported for handling secret keys (for example for smartcard
support), but not for anything else.

You can disable automatic updates in the Thunderbird settings under

It's hard to tell, the message is not very specific. There can be
multiple reasons for this:
- the "key" might is not a valid key
- the key is an ECC key, but your version of GnuPG doesn't support it

To start with, which version of GnuPG do you have?

That's probably a known bug in the OpenPGP library used by Thunderbird. It
crashes when accessing certain keys. If you tell me the crash ID, I can check
if it's the same problem.

The way you put the facts is not quite correct.

It may be true that Thunderbird 78.0 might still lack some OpenPGP
functionality or contain bugs that will need fixing. But whether or not
Thunderbird 78.1 or 78.x will contain new features or bugfixes is up to
the decision of the Thunderbird developers, and has nothing to do with
modularity or decisions taken by Mozilla.

Furthermore, Thunderbird is free to choose its own release cycle. It's
entirely the decision of the Thunderbird developers to base their
releases on Firefox ESR releases. And it's exclusively the decision of
the Thunderbird developers when exactly TB 78 will be released, and
whether or not to wait for some parts of some module to be ready.
History has shown that some TB releases followed Firefox ESR releases
almost immediately, while other releases were delayed for up to 2 months.

The implementation has started off from the existing Enigmail code, and
you can still see quite a bit of it. But certain things are obviously
new or different.

I did not contribute as a developer to what has been implemented/changed
in Thunderbird, but I was a reviewer for most of these changes.

I will continue to support Enigmail for Thunderbird for at least 6
months after the release of TB 78. Depending on how many users will hold
back upgrading from TB 68, I might also extend that period. Furthermore,
I will continue to develop and maintain Enigmail for Postbox; likely for
several more years.

You'll have to hold back upgrading Thunderbird. There will be no

[Enigmail] OpenPGP Support in Thunderbird 77.0b3

2020-05-20 Thread Patrick Brunschwig
The Thunderbird developers have released the first beta version of
Thunderbird 77 that contains native support for OpenPGP emails. The
development has not yet finished; there are still itches and glitches,
but the basic functionality of encryption, decryption, signing and
verification of emails is there. The functionality is still considered
experimental; there are still known issues and white spots.

Details are available from the following post:
https://mail.mozilla.org/pipermail/tb-planning/2020-May/007621.html

Aligned with this release, I created a first beta version of
Enigmail 2.2. Enigmail 2.2 is a special release that serves one single
purpose: help users migrate their keys and settings from Enigmail/GnuPG
to Thunderbird -- nothing more.

If you want to try Enigmail 2.2 Beta 1 along with Thunderbird 77 beta 3,
you can install it from here:

That's a question to ask to the Thunderbird developers. The
functionality is part of the Thunderbird Addon Manager -- an Addon
cannot control whether it's installed or uninstalled or not.

I'm sorry, but I can't tell. DMARC wrapping is not enabled for this

The test suite only needs a network to download Thunderbird and and the
required Debian packages. There is no network access required for
running any test; in particular, the test suite contains no request to
any keyserver or similar.

You mentioned the following line in the log:
> 2020-02-26 18:05:54.188 [DEBUG] keyRefreshService.jsm: Either no
keyservers exist or the protocols specified are invalid. Will recheck in
an hour.

This has nothing to do with network access from the test suite. The
correct interpretation of such Debug log entries is the following:

The test suite is running so long that the usual key refresh service is
becoming active. However, there is no valid configured keyserver, thus
the service doesn't do anything. It will retry in an hour to see if
there is a configured keyserver.

I checked the log file, and I believe that the problem is in the
infrastructure. There are error messages from GnuPG that I would expect
under normal circumstances. The first suspicious log entry is this one:
2020-02-26 17:05:06.247

All of a sudden, GnuPG cannot access pubring.kbx anymore, and thus the
test fail. I assume that some test cases don't foresee such errors and
get stuck.

The message does not relate to the GnuPG key. A library that I use
produces this log entry if a mail account in Thunderbird does not have a
default identity.

In any case, the reason is as Andrew already suspected - the message
"TypeError: XPCOMUtils.generateQI is not a function" is the cause for
the blocked sending. I'll fix it for the next release.

Or ask the Thunderbird developers to backport the fix for whatever is
broken for you...

Seriously, I would _not_ recommend your client to use a beta version for
productive emails just because something is fixed there. Beta versions
are not tested -- they are the basis for performing tests -- and may
have all sorts of bugs and issues.

The reasons why Thunderbird 72 is not supported are the same as for Thunderbird
78. The API that Enigmail uses is no longer available, and it would require an

Thunderbird 72 is a beta version that is not intended for a large

No, that's not what I said. You can't /select/ a /specific/ subkey with
Enigmail. Everything else is fully supported. I.e. gpg chooses an

This is clearly the fault of GNOME, or the way your distribution is
configured. GPG contains a component called gpg-agent that is designed
to deal with handling keys and passphrases. If GNOME decides to hijack
gpg-agent then that's entirely their decision, and you can't blame GPG
for working that.

The above said, I assume that what happens is this: if GNOME keyring is
already running when gpg requires a password, it will connect to the
running instance of GNOME keyring and get the password from there. If
GNOME keyring is not already running, then gpg will need to start a
"keyring" tool on its own. And the only tool known to gpg is gpg-agent.

GnuPG 2.2 was released in 2017. I'm therefore almost certain that Ubuntu
18.04 already uses GnuPG 2.2.x. Therefore, no, it will only make your
life easier because you don't need to synchronize your secret keys anymore.

You should make sure that ~/.gnupg/pubring.gpg is owned by you and that
it's writable. I'd recommend you check all files.

Yes, this is normal. The Postbox people asked specifically that there be
no Enigmail menu on the main window. If you come across a signed or
encrypted message, then the Enigmail controls are available from the
"sign"/"encrypt" icons. Any other functions in Enigmail are available
from the message composition window (e.g. Key Management).

I have the impression that you have installed two versions of Enigmail:
one that comes with Debian, and one that you installed manually. Due to
how Thunderbird works, this is bound to fail. I'd recommend that you
uninstall the Enigmail package from debian (via apt or similar), restart
Thunderbird and retry.

I agree. I wrote a new plpp.pl file, which just does a simplified
version of C-style CPP, that suits the needs of Enigmail. I'll use that
instead of Preprocessor.py, which does a lot more.

I'm currently merging your changes into the main tree.

My aim is to require a subset of the tools required by Mozilla to build
Thunderbird - the python scripts in Enigmail were all copied from the
Mozilla build toolchain, and I never modified any of them. If the
Mozilla build tools are migrated to python3, then I'll be happy to copy
them over to Enigmail.

But my knowledge of python is close to zero - I certainly would not be
able to work on moving to python3 in reasonable time.

I see it a little different. Enigmail is mostly ... well: me, myself and
I. Everything depends on me - I'm the single point of failure in
Enigmail. That's not sustainable and not reliable. Thunderbird OTOH has
stabilized their financial and technical situation, and became a team of
about 10 paid developers (not all full-time though). That's something
substantially different.

[Enigmail] Future OpenPGP Support in Thunderbird

2019-10-08 Thread Patrick Brunschwig
The Thunderbird developers have announced that they will implement
OpenPGP support in Thunderbird 78 [1]. Support for Thunderbird in
Enigmail will therefore be discontinued.

I'd like to explain in the following paragraphs what this will mean for
Enigmail, and why this is an inevitable step.

The Future of Enigmail
--
I will continue to support and maintain Enigmail for Thunderbird 68
until 6 months after Thunderbird 78 will have been released (i.e. a few
months beyond Thunderbird 68 EOL). Enigmail will not run anymore on
Thunderbird 72 beta and newer.

Will this be the end of Enigmail?

No! I will continue to maintain and support Enigmail for Postbox, which
is running on a different release schedule than Thunderbird for the
foreseeable future.

Why Is This Happening?
--
The Mozilla developers have been and still are actively working on
removing old code from their code base. This affects not only
Thunderbird itself, but also add-ons. While it was possible for
Thunderbird to keep old "legacy" add-ons alive for a certain time, the
time has come for Thunderbird to stop supporting them [2]. Thunderbird
78 will no longer to support the APIs that Enigmail requires and only
allow new "WebExtensions".

WebExtensions have a completely different API than classical add-ons,
and a much reduced set of capabilities to hook into the user interface.
For Enigmail to continue to work, it would therefore be required to
rewrite it from scratch. However, that's beyond my available time
limitations.

The Thunderbird developers and I have therefore agreed that it's much
better to implement OpenPGP support directly in Thunderbird. The set of
functionalities will be different than what Enigmail offers, and at
least initially likely be less feature-rich. But in my eyes, this is by
far outweighed by the fact that OpenPGP will be part of Thunderbird and
no add-on and no third-party tool will be required.

In my eyes, a signature carries a certain value. By signing, I warrant a
certain quality about the signed content. That's why I sign release tags, and
some of my emails.

But when it comes to commits, I don't warrant for anything. Some commits are
good, some break things, some are bad attempts to fix something, etc. Also,
since I'm mostly the only developer, there's no review on commits. In other
words, unlike releases, there is no quality assurance on commits.

Therefore, you'll never be able to convince me to sign commits.

0.2.1 can safely be ignored. It was required for some beta version of
TB, but changes in TB 68 forced me to create 0.2.2. I deleted 0.2.1 from
the downloads as it's plain useless.

I suspect that you configured Enigmail or gpg to try to automatically

You can possibly do that by adding a custom CSS in userChrome.css in
your profile directory.

you'd need to put a customized version of the following CSS into that file:

.enigmailHeaderBoxLabelSignatureUnknown {
  background-color:#C9;
  color: black;
}

The log contains the following bits:

---
> /usr/bin/gpg --charset utf-8 --display-charset utf-8
--no-auto-check-trustdb --comment "Etiam si omnes, ego non"
--ignore-mdc-error --batch --no-tty --no-verbose --status-fd 2
--log-file /tmp/gpgOutput.yXNZKQ --sender mich...@nuts.one-admin.com
--max-output 209800 --decrypt

Human-readable output from gpg:

Sorry, we are in batchmode - can't get input
---

From what it looks, I have the impression that you changed the
gpg/gpg-agent configuration to force using loopback-pinentry. I expect
the following line in your gpg.conf file:

pinentry-mode loopback

This won't work with Enigmail - Enigmail requires the use of gpg-agent
for pinentry.

[Enigmail] [ANN] Enigmail 2.0.12 for Postbox 7 available

2019-08-15 Thread Patrick Brunschwig
I am happy to announce Enigmail v2.0.12 for Postbox 7.

Postbox [1] is a commercial email client based on Thunderbird. I have
cooperated with the Postbox developers to make Enigmail ready for their
newest version, Postbox 7 (currently available as beta version [2]; to
be released soon).

With version 7, Postbox introduces a new feature called "Lab
Experiments", and I am proud to announce that Enigmail is the first
"experiment" available.

Compared to Enigmail for Thunderbird, there are a few notable
differences in functionality:

* No support for the pEp Junior mode on Postbox
* Composing messages is restricted to PGP/MIME (no support for composing
  Inline-PGP messages)
* No Enigmail Header Bar when reading messages - click on the pen/lock
icon to get details about the decryption/verification status
* The Enigmail menu is only available when composing messages

If you use Enigmail in the "pEp Junior Mode", then the pep-json-server
is started. The pep-json-server is the pEp Engine that provides the JSON
API (over localhost http), which delivers all functionalities of pEp
(such as encryption, decryption, security level, trustwords, ...).

The pep-json-server is intended to be a daemon and does not need to be
stopped just because Thunderbird quits. Enigmail will reconnect to a
running pep-json-server if you restart Thunderbird, and other
applications using the same API could also connect to the same
pep-json-server. Thus, yes it's desired to work like this.

Are both keys in the Key Manager displayed in bold (ie. as key pair)?

Do you have two different accounts in the account manager - one for
postmaster and one for site-admin? If yes, then you need to open the
Account Manager (menu Tools > Account Manager), and go to the "OpenPGP
Settings" for the "Postmaster" account. Click on "Use specific key
OpenPGP Key ID" and select the key for postmaster.

If that doesn't help, it may be that you configured gpg to always sign
using a specific key.

The Add-Ons manager in Thunderbird takes care of upgrading Enigmail if
there is a new version of Enigmail.

The only thing is that you _currently_ have to upgrade Enigmail manually
if you upgrade from Thunderbird 60 to beta versions of Thunderbird 68.

Once TB 68 will be released, the upgrade of Enigmail will be done
automatically. I'm not sure about the upgrading process & speed of the
various Linux distributions.
