Re: [Enigmail] Impossible to generate key

2017-03-04 Thread Anders Bateva
OK, I deleted all my keys, installed haveged, and generated new ones in
20 seconds (instead of 10 minutes). I think everything is fine now.

I don't know how to discover why the file permissions where misconfigured.

As Doug wrote: If you haven't used them (nothing encrypted to them) and
not send them elsewhere, just delete all you don't need any longer.

If I were you, I'd try to find out why some of the files in the ~/.gnupg
directory were owned by root. This is NOT the behaviour of a standard setup.

This is all to avoid such a painful recovery again and maybe can help
others to run into the same situation as you.

Again, if you never sent them anywhere publicly, just delete them all,
and start over again (assuming you have proper randomness on your system
now).

You've created a giant mess for yourself, better to simplify and make
something you have a chance of managing.

Good! Now the key manager loads all the keys. I changed the expiry date,
disabled and revoked all of them that I could. 1 or 2 I couldn't due to
not being able to enter the correct password for them.

No, under these conditions gpg can't work satisfactory. Please repair
the permissions of your ~/.gnupg directory.

chmod -R u+rwx ~/.gnupg
chmod -R go-rwx ~/.gnupg

This can also be done via your file managers GUI.

Re: [Enigmail] Impossible to generate key

2017-02-21 Thread Anders Bateva
Debugging doesn't bugs me.

Here is the log. I noticed that, 16 times, it tried to open
"trustdb.gpg" and had "permission denied" ("Permissão negada"). Probably
isn't what should happen.

This is all very strange. To find the root of your problems, we would
need to see the debug log not only during startup, but during the launch
of Enigmails key manager. Sorry to bug you for more and more debugging
actions.

So please, restart Thunderbird, and immediately after it is accessible,
start Enigmails key manager. Then store the log. Thanks for your
cooperation.

gpg -K shows nothing

gpg2 -K shows the keys

So, the storage is different. But I generated all of them on gpg2 and
they are stored on gpg2 and Enigmail access gpg2.

They don't appear on the Enigmail key manager. There is no configuration
to be done on the keys inside the addon.

This is because the keys were generated with GnuPG 2.1. GnuPG 2.1 stores
the keys differently than GnuPG 1.4 and 2.0; therefore you don't see
these keys with "gpg".

As you do have a list of keys from gpg2, I'd recommend you set the path
for GnuPG in Enigmail to /usr/bin/gpg2 (menu Enigmail > Preferences),
such that these keys are visible in Enigmail.

this means your Thunderbird is not communicating with the daemon -- i think

This looks all unproblematic. Enigmail finds gpg2 and will use it. There
should be no problem at all when using Enigmail. To clarify what has
happend, would you please check the output of the following commands:

gpg -K

and

gpg2 -K

(remind that K is a capital letter). If the outcome is different, then
you generated your key with one gpg version, Enigmail uses the other and
they have different storage systems.

That having been said, it has been my experience that once a key gets
into the wild, it finds it's way onto keyservers whether you want it
to or not.

One great way to get a key onto a keyserver without having to upload
it yourself is to use it in an encrypted message group - you'll find
it won't be long before someone in the group performs a mass upload of
their public keyring, and your key will be forever after immortalized
in the keyserver rosters.

If you never uploaded them to a key server, or sent them out to

delete them.

GPG or GPG2 ?

click the Enigmail option in the toolbar at the top of Thunderbird

then click the Preferences option

Observe message: GnuPG was found i ... it will be gpg or gpg2 and if
you have gpg2 on your system it should have identified that.

now that you know which GPG you are using, go to terminal and enter

gpg2 --list-keys

(if you are using gpg in Thunderbird then you would use that instead)

you should see the same keys using --list-keys that you see in the Key
Manager dialog: at the top of Thunderbird click Enigmail in the tool
bar and then take the key management option.this should display the
same list of keys.if you are using gpg2 in Thunderbird then
Thunderbird Key Management should display the same list of keys that you
see when you issue the gpg2 --list-keys command. If they don't come
up, then from the Enigmail, Key Management dialog, select the File
option and hit reload key cache.this should get the keys for you;
let us know if it does not.

use gpg2 --delete-secret-and-public-key

to remove all your keys except the one you are going to use.be sure
to use the fingerprint ID as -- as you have multiple keys you

That's a possible reason. To be sure, would you please create a debug

Try to open Enigmails key management. Select "Reload key cache". Is

The Enigmail key list is blank as always. Wouldn't I need first to add
the key pair generated on terminal to the Enigmail interface? And to a

When you hear hoofbeats, you look for a horse nearby. It's only after
you conclude there is no horse that you start looking for zebra.

If key generation is taking forever, you think entropy and haveged. If
that's not the problem we'll start looking for zebra. Until then, this
is a horse we've heard many, many times before.

In 25+ years of using PGP and GnuPG I've seen this problem literally
hundreds of times. In only a few cases has it not been entropy-related.

Having an expiry date is not a bad idea. I once was glad that an
unusable, but uploaded key had an expiry date set. If it is near, then
you can easily extend the expiry period. Enigmail will tell you when the
expiry is near. You then can decide what to do.

As Doug said: If they were never used and are not uploaded or sent
anywhere, just delete them.

The next thing to do is to tell Enigmail to use the last generated key.
You should open the settings of the account you want to use with
encryption. Then select "OpenPGP security". The checkbox "Enable OpenPGP
support" should be selected.

Next, use the "Use specific OpenPGP key ID" should be selected. Click on

You are never tied to anything in PGP. If there is ever a time to revoke
the key in the future, you can do so quite easily, as well as generating
and socializing a new key pair.

How can you be so sure my system has not enough entropy?

Because I have over 20 years of experience with Unix systems and
cryptography. Because you're not running haveged, and because it's
taking so long to produce a key.

Do you have some specific objection to running haveged?

You really should install haveged, then wait a few hours, and generate
a new key. The process relies on quality entropy to work properly, and
you obviously haven't had it previously. Having good entropy on your
system is a requirement for a variety of other crypto purposes,
including using gpg down the road.

Also, unless you have a specific purpose for doing so, please don't
use an expiration date on your key. It adds extra complexity for no
good purpose.

Here's gpg2:

I noticed that /usr/bin/gpg was not a symlink on your system. Is it a
hard link or is it gpg1? You can use the file command to find out.

If it is not a hard link maybe you should find out what version it is.
gpg --version

As I stated previously Enigmail seems to depend on /usr/bin/gpg being
version 2 of GnuPG.

Should then I use /gpg2 --gen-key/? Maybe /gpg2
--full-generate-key/?

The answer to this question is first finding out what the file gpg
really is. The second part depends how many questions you want to
answe
r.

This is from the man page:

  --full-generate-key
   --full-gen-key
Generate a new key pair with dialogs for all options.
This is an extended version of --generate-key.

There is also a feature which allows you to create keys
in batch mode. See the manual section ``Unattended key
generation'' on how to use this.

This includes what questions what cipher you want to use along with a
lot of other questions. As a beginner I would use the just the
--gen-key unless you really want to learn all of the details.

I already uninstalled gnupg, and I'm sure I have gnupg2. I have

What to do?

Your system does not have enough entropy to produce the high-quality
randomness that GnuPG needs. Install the 'haveged' package.

gpg2 and gpg1 can coexist peacefully on a machine without affecting
Enigmail operation.

Anders, did you try

gpg2 --gen-key?

What was the outcome?

I already sent the result of "/gpg --version/", on the last e-mail: it
returns version 1.4.20. And "/gpg2 --version/" returns version 2.1.11.
So I have both.

So, I have both gpg and gpg2. I can't create a symlink because gpg
really exist, it's used for the VPN (when I uninstalled gpg yesterday,
the VPN, I could not login anymore, and when I reinstalled the VPN
today, it installed gpg too).

Here's gpg2:

Should then I use /gpg2 --gen-key/? Maybe /gpg2 --full-generate-key/?

I noticed that you are using free BSD from the headers so I assume
that you know how to use a terminal.

Open up your favorite terminal an enter:
gpg --version
gpg (GnuPG) 2.1.18
libgcrypt 1.7.6
Copyright (C) 2017 Free Software Foundation, Inc.
License GPLv3+: GNU GPL version 3 or later

You should get a response something like above. If you do not get a
response maybe you should see if gpg is installed on your system. My
favorite way is:

ls -lh /usr/bin/gpg*
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root4 Jan 23 19:00 /usr/bin/gpg -> gpg2
- -rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 989K Nov 2 2015 /usr/bin/gpg1
- -rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 59K Nov 2 2015 /usr/bin/gpg1split
- -rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 364K Nov 2 2015 /usr/bin/gpg1v
- -rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 3.3K Nov 2 2015 /usr/bin/gpg1-zip
- -rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 930K Jan 23 19:00 /usr/bin/gpg2
- -rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 360K Jan 23 19:00 /usr/bin/gpg-agent
- -rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 143K Jan 23 19:00 /usr/bin/gpgconf
- -rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 149K Jan 23 19:00 /usr/bin/gpg-connect-agent
- -rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 27K Dec 28 01:45 /usr/bin/gpg-error
- -rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 2.2K Dec 28 01:45 /usr/bin/gpg-error-config
- -rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 4.8K Oct 27 12:05 /usr/bin/gpgme-config
- -rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 68K Oct 27 12:05 /usr/bin/gpgme-tool
- -rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 23K Jan 23 19:00 /usr/bin/gpgparsemail
- -rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 190K Jan 23 19:00 /usr/bin/gpgscm
- -rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 455K Jan 23 19:00 /usr/bin/gpgsm
- -rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 141K Jan 23 19:00 /usr/bin/gpgtar
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root5 Jan 23 19:00 /usr/bin/gpgv -> gpgv2
- -rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 405K Jan 23 19:00 /usr/bin/gpgv2
- -rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 3.4K Jan 23 19:00 /usr/bin/gpg-zip

As you can see I have both versions of gpg installed and /usr/bin/gpg
is actually a symlink to gpg2. I think that enigmail requires this
symlink since it probably calls /usr/bin/gpg. If you have
/usr/bin/gpg2 without a symlink gpg pointing to it then I would create
a symlink manually.

If there is no response from the ls command then you need to install
using the bsd pkg command.

If you have a symlink gpg > gpg2 why not attempt to create a key using
gpg on the command line.

gpg --gen-key
gpg (GnuPG) 2.1.18; Copyright (C) 2017 Free Software Foundation, Inc.
This is free software: you are free to change and redistribute it.
There is NO WARRANTY, to the extent permitted by law.

Note: Use "gpg2 --full-generate-key" for a full featured key
generation dialog.

If the gpg symlink points to gpg1 then the newer versions of enigmail
probably would not work. You need the gpg symlink to point to gpg2.

...

If you can generate a key manually then the problem is with enigmail.
If you cannot generate a key manually then the problem is with gnupg.

I hope that this rambling from a paranoid old man helps :-)
