Seems like from what you both are saying supporting Jabber as well as
other protocols is natural. I'm sure there is lots of code out there to
support Jabber already.
Certainly as a modular addition, Jabber would be a great candidate.
Have you guys looked at libgaim? IIRC there's a few clients
