Thanks for the help so far on finding a keyboard switcher/indicator; I am
still having no luck, but I thought I'd report my rather interesting
findings. I tried scim, and also uim, both of which are able to modify the
keyboard input method just fine, but don't offer simple layout switching (in
short, I can use them to input complex characters like IPA, Japanese, etc,
but they don't allow me to use the french or icelandic layout that any
standard keyboard switcher allows, so they're not useful for me by
themselves). I've tried a half-dozen other keyboard indicators, none of
which seem to work. The interesting thing is that in GNOME, any and all
keyboard indicators work fine--xxkb, kkbswitch, whatever--, but not in e17.
They simply don't change the keyboard layout from e17. In gnome, all
indicators/switchers show all of my configured keyboard layouts
(FR,US,IS,EL), but in e no layouts are shown and now switching is available.

Any clue as to why this funny behavior might exist?

Thanks!
jxn
