E18 is different from E17. E17.6 is what you want - dropbox works there.
Do you have the systray module loaded? That is what E uses to display icons
like what dropbox uses to display its status.

I have found so far that dropbox no longer uses nautilus to open up any more
and I can't
figure out what it uses.

What do you mean? Dropbox works fine under E17 by default.
Under E18 it doesn't work with the new systray though sadly - so while it
still syncs your files you can't get status updates.
Can you be more specific about what isn't working for you?

I have dropbox installed and running for sometime. I don't use it actually,
but I do have some issues.
As you say, I have it in 'connecting' and also I don't have the icon, but a
BIG exclamation sign. I have it like this since the old E17.3, so it's been
borked for quite some time now.
