wmctrl and xdotools behave slightly abnormally with e, is there another way
to get the desk number from its xid?

I have issue with maximazing Scrach view in e17. AFAIR the problem
isn't present in other window managers. I first observed it at Xbuntu
and now in Debian Wheezy with packages from testing (0.16.
something) as well from John Holland location (17.3).
E17 freezes in state as on this pictur

You might try restarting enlightenment from the text console.
killall -HUP enlightenment
that might allow you to salvage the scratch session.
