I am in the process of consolidating 2 servers[A,B] into 1 machine: [A] does mainly httpd and mysqld; [B] handles sendmail with often fairly large and long jobs. [A] is a 1GHz / 512MB machine, and with 4000 visitors per day (many with DB access) performs quiet well (CPU load is below 0.2 most of the time and rarely above 1.0). [B] is a lame duck (330 MHz), and slows down under load, but that is currently no problem since apache runs on the other machine.
Machine [A] has to be replaced with something in the same range (or more MHz/MB Ram ???) and I am contemplating to get a dual processor machine for this. I have little experience with dual processor machines and am wondering how much one can gain in a scenario like that ??? , and what other potential issues I'll have to deal with with dual processors (it will be most likely a RH installation; 7.2?) - Horst
