So... I havnt had a lot of time to mess with this lappy yet, but these are the 
things Ive tried:
original drivers for the smc 8020 pcmcia network card. no luck...
different drivers (8022) no luck.
Booting knoppix (boots, runs great, detects/loads my network). sadly it wont 
let me write to the ntfs (winxp) partition!

I think Im going to have to resort to floppy disks and juno free internet to 
get the network (if winxp even supports this device at all!). 

Or
setup my wireless net (I did get a chance to compile the wireless driver, but 
havnt set up the network or anything yet... or setup the wireless on the 
lappy...

sadly, the lappy came with XP (but has a sticker for win2k) I guess the guy 
that sold it setup his winxp (and a bunch of other stuff, taking up 4G of 
12G). I shold see if I can get the original cd that comes with this laptop, 
but untill then, I have to deal with XP (which so far is very unimpressive to 
me) Sadly, I still need both windows and linux to do eveyrthing I need right 
now...
