Re: [Eug-lug]Deleted? // topic bind/sendmail grub

2002-12-24 Thread Horst
Hhm, sounds like interesting material for an open-format LUG topic. I'd
love to see that conversation between the two of you 'on stage' at EFN HQ.
 I have one client where I have to make sendmail/bind configurations,
eventually getting it done somehow, never w/o bruises, never with
sufficient time to experiment since their site is alive with people
waiting for mail delivery... in short, I definitely would be interested.

As for the format -casual round-table presentations- I thought our first
run in Fall turned out well; then Cory and Ralph set higher standards, but
it doesn't have to be always like that all the time, as far as I am
concerned.

To throw in one more, recently Joseph Crtr. expanded on grub vs. lilo. I'd
love to hear more about that at, let's say as a 20 min pres. followed by
Q/As -- in connection with another topic, like the one above.

The name servers at mailbank.com are saying that ocicat.crandell.net
is a CNAME (alias) for sd1.mailbank.com.

crandell.net.criticalpath.net has no MX ... no mail routing
information for that machine is available. Eventually, it comes

I wish phpGroupware threaded messages.

Here is some more information.

from=<[EMAIL PROTECTED]>, size=314, class=0, nrcpts=1,
msgid=<[EMAIL PROTECTED]>, proto=ESMTP,
relay=sharon@localhost
Dec 22 13:14:42 ocicat sendmail[6773]: gBMLEfd06772:
[EMAIL PROTECTED], delay=00:00:01, xdelay=00:00:01,
mailer=esmtp, pri=30054, relay=crandell.net.criticalpath.net. [209.231.80.62],
dsn=2.0.0, stat=Sent (ok 1040591683 qp 3064)
Dec 22 13:15:51 ocicat sendmail[6774]: gBMKuaq06753:
to=<[EMAIL PROTECTED]>, delay=00:19:15, xdelay=00:00:00, mailer=esmtp,
pri=390170, relay=sd1.mailbank.com. [64.15.175.5], dsn=4.0.0, stat=Deferred:
Connection refused by sd1.mailbank.com.

I think the last line is the key to my problem. Which means that I need to change
the domain name of my server in order to get NetIdentity to accept mail from me. (I
think they think I'm a spammer)

I set up an alias that looks like:
[EMAIL PROTECTED]:   [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Now it sends but they refuse it. Sigh.

Merry Christmas.

Ocicat is my central mail server that's running phpGroupware, IMAP, and Sendmail.
When I send an email to euglug.org, it goes directly to willamette.net instead of
using the smart relay at nu-world.com. That way when my ISP changes again, I don't
have to remember to change the mail server. Sendmail is as simple and as close to
stock as possible and still allow the users functioning email.

Is this a correct statement on my part?

I find it easier to relay all my mail through the same relay, instead
of having individual hosts send mail directly (because then only the
relay has to masquerade names and such) ... and have all incoming
mail go to a single server (with a backup).

Does ocicat have a DNS server on it? What does

$ dig crandell.net MX

(the 'MX' is important) show on ocicat? And if ocicat has a dns server
listening on localhost,

$ dig @localhost crandell.net MX

would be more relevant.

And finally, are you sending the mail to 'JohnL' or '[EMAIL PROTECTED]'?

I can explain that in general terms, but not specific terms unless I see
some specific bounce headers. Mailman can only remove a person based on
bounce headers if it knows for whom the mail was intended. Debian has
worked this out with their modified smartlist setup such that bounce
messages contain identifyable information in in the address to which a
bounce should be directed. Seems to be more effective than that is done
by mailman.

Bob,
 *I* am not kicking anyone from the list (I have, but only when getting a
*lot* of bounce messages. The mailing list software should be configured to
remove users that bounce message (I dont know why it doesnt sometimes...)
So.. its not a personal thing... its a machine thing. Im not sure why your
mail server isnt working right, however my guess is that it might be a DNS
issue (often thats the case) Id first check that all the mail servers in
question have the proper MX records in all the DNS servers (sometimes Primary
DNS servers dont propigate well to all the slave servers...) After that, Id
check the mail server (Im only really familiar with sendmail
(/etc/sendmail.cf).
If you want, I can try to help... but I am a bit rusty on all that stuff...

I changed DR to inbound.crandell.net.criticalpath.net then reread your paragraph

Ocicat mails directly. If I used a smart relay host, it would be
mailhost.nu-world.com.

I was trying some of the things kBob suggested. As soon as I enabled the changes my
