It's not formally wrong. It's just a matter of common usage in different communities. If no formal papers are required, then its common to call the thing a 'call for papers'. But you have to make it clear that what you are looking for is an Abstract, otherwise some poor soul may send you a whole paper. I just figured that while somebody had to talk with this person we had better make sure he knew what it was he needed to send.
