You could have the brake lights switch a relay that switched in and
out a resistor near the potbox. Then when your foot was on the brake,
the motor stops, but when you lift off the pedal it starts turning
slowing, and is hopefully engaged by the time you are ready to go.

Alternatively, idling may not be as bad as you think, you could
probably turn the motor really slowly. Don't most cars have lockup
converters now? That would be close to manual efficiency then.

Agreed manuals in general are better (although they are starting to
get rare). Another benefit a manual has is it'll be up to about 100
pounds lighter than an automatic.
