Dana Corporation Unveils 12-Volt 'Stop-Start' Technology for
Better Fuel Economy and Reduced Emissions

TOLEDO, Ohio, Oct. 21 /PRNewswire/ -- Convergence 2002,
Booth # 520 -- Dana Corporation (NYSE:DCN) has developed a
new starter/alternator which enables "stop-start" technology
with traditional 12-volt electrical systems. Use of this
technology, which is being developed for the light truck/SUV
market, results in improved fuel economy and reduced
emissions.

Dana's starter/alternator technology saves fuel by shutting
off a vehicle's engine when the vehicle comes to a stop and
restarts it instantly when the driver removes their foot
from the brake pedal.  Restart occurs in less than 300
milliseconds, resulting in extremely smooth operation. "The
benefits of this technology are obvious in stop-and-go,
bumper-to-bumper city traffic," Hickey said.  "If the
vehicle isn't running, emissions are reduced and fuel isn't
consumed."

The design utilizes switched reluctance technology and
combines both a motor and a generator into one unit. 
Switched reluctance motors use no magnets, making Dana's
design more cost efficient.  The rotor is reduced in
complexity as compared to equivalent AC induction and DC
magnet systems.  The design generates no internal heat, and
is significantly more efficient than existing systems in
low-speed generation.  It can operate on 12 to 300 volts and
has significant advantages over similar designs.

"One of the most important advantages is that it can be
engineered to output from two kilowatts to 40 kilowatts
using the same basic technology," said John Hickey, director
of advanced product engineering for Dana's Automotive
Systems Group. "Our starter/alternator will start a V-8
engine on 12 volts and will work on existing vehicles."

The starter/alternator can be programmed in a variety of
ways.  For example, in the event of frequent stops and
starts in a traffic jam, the system can be programmed to
increase the time interval before the engine stops.

In addition to its fuel economy and emissions benefits, the
starter/alternator technology may provide a boost in
bringing electric power steering to market faster, due to
its ability to power advanced electrical systems.

The starter/alternator provides maximum generation
capability while at idle.  As a result, a greater number of
electronic systems such as steering and cooling can operate
while the vehicle is idling without causing a power drain.

"The ability of the starter/alternator to provide 'power
demand matching' means that, when used to power other
advanced electronic/mechanical systems such as electric
power steering and intelligent cooling, the overall fuel
economy savings can be significantly increased," Hickey
said.

First lady takes ride in students' electric vehicle
Richmond High School: Judy O'Bannon praises educational
efforts of youth, adults  By Pamela Isaacson  Staff writer

Ben Tincher said he was a little nervous when Judy O'Bannon
slid into the passenger seat of a converted electric car.

It was the first time the Richmond High School 11th-grader
had given Indiana's first lady a lift.

O'Bannon visited Richmond High School on Thursday to film
students who participated in Green Motion
[ http://www.rp-l.com/greenmotion.htm ], an effort to
convert a standard gas-powered car to all electric, for the
television series "Communities Building Community." O'Bannon
is the program's host.

Green Motion was a partnership between Richmond High School,
Richmond Power & Light and Townsend Community Center.

"This is lifelong learning," O'Bannon said. "The adults had
as much fun and learned as much as the kids. It's that kind
of community involvement we're focusing on."

O'Bannon had invited the group to display the electric car
at the Indiana State Fair this summer. The project was part
of the Electric Vehicle Challenge Program and the RHS Area
Career Automotive Technology program.

Tincher and Eric Killion, both juniors at the school, said
it took 30 students about 300 hours to finish the car. They
said, in the beginning, they doubted it would run.

After O'Bannon rode with Tincher around the block several
times so the camera crew could film their shots, she said
the car didn't make a sound.

"It's so quiet," O'Bannon said. "You don't even know it's
going."

She said she and Tincher discussed how participating in the
car project has made him consider his career options.

"It's definitely provided a learning experience," Tincher
said. "I know I want to go into the auto industry somewhere,
but I don't know where I want to go."

New Hydraulic Technology From Permo-Drive Promises Major
Fuel Economy Gains

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn., Oct. 15 /PRNewswire/ -- A new "hybrid"
hydraulic technology for commercial vehicles promises fuel
economy improvements of up to 40 percent for both new and
used vehicles, according to Paul Chandler, vice president of
North American operations for Permo-Drive Technologies Ltd.

Chandler said that based on prototype testing in Australia
and the United States, Permo-Drive's regenerative braking
and propulsion system for all classes of commercial vehicles
can significantly increase brake life, improve fuel economy,
and reduce hydrocarbon and particulate emissions.

Speaking at the Hybrid Electric Truck Users Forum at the
Chattanooga Choo Choo Holiday Inn, Oct. 15-16, he noted that
in addition to new-vehicle applications, Permo-Drive's
Regenerative Energy Management (REM) system can easily be
installed on existing vehicle fleets to achieve major and
immediate improvements in fuel economy.

REM technology captures previously unused energy generated
by a vehicle's brake system and releases it back into the
driveline as power is needed.

Chandler said that major features of the Permo-Drive system
include:

-- An innovative, "regenerative" driveshaft design,
-- Energy accumulators utilizing composite materials,
-- Ultra-light weight metals, and
-- Advanced hydraulic engineering.

The Permo-Drive executive said the company will begin
testing of the system in major North American vehicle fleets
in 2003 and plans to make the technology available
commercially in 2004.

Electric Fuel CEO Steps Down; Company Discontinues
Unprofitable Consumer Battery Operations To Focus On Defense
and Security Business
NEW YORK--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Oct. 21, 2002--
Company Projects Positive Cash Flow in 2003

Electric Fuel Corporation announced today
that Yehuda Harats, its president and CEO and a member of
the Board, has decided to resign from his positions with the
Company and its subsidiaries in order to pursue other
interests.

The Company also announced that it will discontinue retail
sales of its INSTANT POWER(R) consumer battery products
because of the high costs associated with consumer marketing
and low volume manufacturing. The move is expected to
significantly accelerate progress toward achieving positive
cash flow in 2003. The Company will continue to fulfill all
its existing contractual obligations, online sales, and
sales to OEMs and the military.

The decision will enable the Company to focus on its defense
and security related businesses: the "use of force"
simulator business operated by the Company's IES Interactive
Training subsidiary; the car armoring business operated by
the Company's MDT subsidiary; and the Company's military and
OEM battery business, which produces batteries for the U.S.
Armed Forces, U.S. and Israeli security agencies, as well as
high tech battery solutions for unmanned aircraft and
vehicles.

The Board of Directors selected Robert S. Ehrlich, Chairman
of the Board, to be the new President and CEO. Mr. Ehrlich
has an extensive background in corporate restructuring at
Mattel, Inc. and Fresenius Medical Systems, Inc. When Mr.
Ehrlich joined Fresenius as CEO and Chairman, its revenues
were $16 million; when he left the Board, its revenues had
climbed to $3.5 billion.

International Rectifier Introduces Three-Phase Inverter
Driver IC to Simplify Designs of Motor Drives

EL SEGUNDO, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Oct. 21,
2002--International Rectifier, IR(r) introduces
the IR2136 family of three-phase inverter-driver ICs for
variable speed motor drives. The new ICs integrate six
MOSFET or IGBT high voltage gate drivers with a range of
protection functions at 30% lower system cost than
opto-coupler solutions. These ICs also simplify design with
as much as 30% lower component count and shrink gate drive
circuit size by up to 50% compared to alternative
solutions.

The IR2136 IC family is designed to decrease the cost and
complexity of energy-efficient, electronically-driven
variable speed electric motors for home appliances such as
laundry washers and air conditioners, as well as light
industrial and automotive motor drives.

"Appliance manufacturers are transitioning to variable speed
motors which can save more than 50% of the energy and enable
new features. The latest water-saving clothes washers use
high voltage gate driver ICs to implement energy-efficient
electronically-driven, variable speed motors. IR's new
inverter-driver ICs contain the functionality and protection

Technical Highlights
The 600V IR2136 ICs are CMOS- or LSTTL-output compatible,
down to 3.3V logic for direct interface with a
microcontroller or other logic devices and offer 120mA/250mA
output source/sink current. The new ICs enable rugged
designs with up to 50V/ns dV/dt immunity and low di/dt drive
current for noise immunity.

The IR2136 delivers higher performance than opto-couplers or
transformers, and allows high frequency operation with a
deadtime as low as 250ns, and a typical turn-on/turn-off
time of 400ns. The output drivers feature a high pulse
current buffer stage designed for minimum driver
cross-conduction. The IC integrates cross-conduction
prevention logic to eliminate short-circuit conditions.
Matched propagation delays for all six channels in the
single IC package ensure consistent high frequency
operation. High frequency provides better motor torque
performance at low speed and reduces audible noise.

An over-current trip function terminates all six outputs,
and can be derived from an external current sense resistor.
An open-drain fault signal to the main controller indicates
that an over-current or under-voltage shutdown has occurred.
An enable function is available to terminate all six outputs
simultaneously. Over-current fault conditions are cleared
automatically after a delay programmed externally via an R-C
network.

The IR2136 ICs are well suited for 110V to 360V input
inverters up to 2kW, used for AC induction, brushless DC or
switched reluctance motor drivers.

U.S. Army TACOM National Automotive Center (NAC) Showcases
Latest Vehicle Technology at AUSA Oct. 21-23

WARREN, Mich., Oct. 17 /PRNewswire/ -- The U.S. Army TACOM
National Automotive Center (NAC) will showcase, with
commercial partners, the latest in vehicle technologies that
have potential to transform today's Army into a lighter,

Some of the ongoing NAC projects, located in industry

Advanced Hybrid Electric Wheel Drive Technology -- a
partnership with General Dynamics Land Systems.  An advanced
hybrid electric propulsion system, that provides improved
fuel economy, reduced maintenance costs and minimal
emissions, has been integrated into a 13 ton Gross Vehicle
Weight, 8 wheel/8 wheel drive (8x8) ground vehicle in order
to evaluate the military application of this electric wheel
drive technology to a medium class (approximately 20 tons)
platform.

Family of Medium Tactical Vehicles (FMTV) -- a partnership

the integration of a hybrid propulsion system onto one of
the Army's FMTV platforms.  This regenerative braking system
reverses the motor's magnetic field during braking to slow

will provide high rates of acceleration and highway speeds
for heavy vehicles. The vehicle is also capable of

Mobile Parts Hospital (MPH) Rapid Manufacturing System (RMS)
-- a partnership with CAMP, Focus: HOPE and IITRI.  MPH is
the automotive equivalent of the Mobile Army Surgical
Hospital (MASH).  It combines the latest in manufacturing
equipment and advanced technologies in two militarized ISO
containers called Rapid Manufacturing System (RMS). Trained
personnel can produce both standard and unique replacement
and repair parts on demand for vehicles in the field.  MPH
provides an on-site fix so a disabled vehicle and its crew
can finish the assigned mission safely.

We've had success reducing dendrite formation with our charge algorithm by

Thanks for taking the time to define all those things. It's a drag that
the gold zinc chromate is also called "cad". 

Be aware that Cadmium plating releases poisonous gasses when heated to
welding temperature. Cadmium is also a heavy metal, a lot like lead, and
my cad plated screws generate cad dust freely as I screw them in and
out. Not good, use only when necessary and wash your hands frequently.

Nickel plating will add noticeable thickness to screw threads - you'd
have to specify a really thin coating like .0001" max per surface.
Particularly on machine-tapped holes (which should be masked anyway),
maybe less critical on screws and even less critical on nuts, since they
are cut with extra clearance unless you go out of your way to get "class
3" threads (class 2 is typical). Nickel plating can also cause hydrogen
embrittlement, less-so if electroless Ni plating. However, in theory, in
a perfect world, your fasteners are sized and torqued such that fatigue
is not an issue.

The chrom* processes also produce hazardous waste, though the product
does not seem to be a concern. I like Nickel plating for that reason
among other things, and it looks awesome if the parts are grit blasted
first (soft media - surface texture only). Aluminum can be electroless
Ni plated too, though I've seen it flake off on rare occasions (OK,
once, on an extrusion for which the alloy wasn't a good plating
candidate, my bad).

On Aluminum (further off the fastener topic), the dull yellow-gold-green
finish has various names; chem film, yellow chromate, Alodine - not
Anodize!, chemical conversion coating (it's technically correct term).
It adds some corrosion resistance and it's a good paint base and keeps
things like skin acid from etching fingerprints into your otherwise
gorgeous parts. It's dyed yellow by default otherwise it would be
impossible to tell by visual inspection that it was there. No problem
with thickness on screw threads, the net build-up is in microinches.
It's pretty electrically conductive in the thickness its used in (unlike
anodize), so won't interfere with grounding and might help by reducing
corrosion at grounding points. If it's done sloppily, some yellow can be
rubbed off and get on stuff. A chem filmed Al part visually looks
similar to dull cadmium plated parts.

http://www.barryavenueplating.com/index_ie.php3  has a "spec book" that
is truly awesome, but you have to call to get it. It's worth a try, I
don't know how freely they give it out.

AM Fasteners in Tacoma, WA had good prices on certified MIL-spec
fasteners, 1-800-538-9586, they will ship and you can pay by credit card

True about 4wd vs 2wd models. Also I found when using the same 14 US8VGC's
in my Metro (2400lbs) and in the Geo Tracker that I get the same range 30
miles when driving the back roads to work in the 35-45mph speed but when I
take the highway due to the boxy wind resistance, my range drops to 22 miles
on this 3200lb vehicle. (Well actually these are the -HD versions which is
like having a 15th battery.)
Since the batts are hanging down and out of the back seat it looks more
factory (less like a rolling science project) and handles well. I can now
take the whole family out to dinner etc instead of just driving to work 300
miles per week.

On several occasions, I load tested the entire pack in
my  Ranger conversion.  After a trip and before recharging the
pack, I'd run the heater which drew about 25 amperes.
Check the voltage of each battery every few minutes.
After while the weak battery or batteries would start to
lose voltage rapidly while the good batteries would lose
voltage very slowly.

In 1999 I found two bad ones this  way and removed them
 from the string of 20 and carried on with 18 batteries and
slightly reduced performance until a third and fourth battery
failed in 2002.

The control probably would run fine at 36Volts is you make sure the bus
caps are rated appropriately,
ie 50Volts.
The only problem is that my motor overheats too fast on the hilly terrain
around my house and this would
only get worse at 36V.
I'm assuming that is the same motor as the one used on the Currie scooter
from the link below?
I'm building up the exact same size motor with parts at work, but I'm using
a Neo rotor cup, increasing winding size and going to class 'H' insulation.
I'm also using my external control instead of mounting it inside the motor
housing.
The biggest problem with that type of motor design is keeping the stator
cool.
The stator is INSIDE the rotor cup (inside out motor).
This works great in blowers where there is plenty of air being pulled
through the
motor.  On the curry design the round finned heatsink is connected to the
casting
that holds the 3-phase potted control.  The control stays cool enough, but
you can't pull heat
out of the stator because there is no airflow (the motor is essentially
NEMA4 and sealed).
The only reason I'm using this time of motor on the scooter is it will bolt
up to the existing bracket
with no modifications to the scooter.
A pancake axial motor like the ones E-cycle designs would be better.
(oh, and did I mention my motor and control will be free :-)
Hopefully I'll get time to finish this project over Christmas.
