Not really (try putting a piece of wire in series with itself). But the S/P control could be used to pull in field weakening on a single motor.

Or run a shunt motor, using a fixed field in two steps and a Zilla in the armature.

Someone suggested P/S a battery pack, but that would be ... unhealthy, to say the least - massive inrush currents to the controller, have to precharge again for the doubled voltage.

I like your ideas. This has stirred a thought in my head If I eliminate the internal fan in my motor I could shorten the housing accordingly. The only problem I see with this is the holes that were the outlet for the fan before will be eliminated. So I would drill some new holes to let the air out to cool the motor. Would I be screwing up the magnetic lines of force from the fields if I were to drill holes in the case between the field windings.
Thanks for any input.

Hi Mike

I'm not Jim, but my motor had no fan. I have fitted up a blower (in at the brush end) and out through the end plate behind the flywheel and through vent holes in the bell housing. I had a complete new end plate made, which did double-duty of end plate and bell housing adaptor. I've placed a picture of my motor in pieces at:

Well, that wouldn't work because when I took it there to get the tires put on
it was dead and after I said I had to show whoever was pulling it in how to
turn it on and drive it I had the whole shop over there with the hood poped and
me explaining how it worked. Maybe I can find a time when there is another

The Effect of Polar Moment of Inertia
The moment of inertia has to do with a body's resistance to angular
acceleration. Polar refers to the ends. Consequently, the polar moment of
inertia of a vehicle is related to the mass that is located near the front
and rear. The effect of polar mass can be experienced by rotating a dumbbell
back-and-forth around a central axis. The weight concentrated at the ends
makes the barbell resist changes in direction. A ball of equal weight will
reverse directions with little effort because the mass is concentrated at
the center. Most passenger cars are designed with a relatively high polar
moment of inertia. The engine is located over the front or rear axle and the
fuel and luggage are located at the opposite end. The center of the vehicle
is hollow to provide room for the occupants.
A low polar moment of inertia results in a vehicle with more responsive
handling, but it also produces a more choppy ride. A vehicle with high polar
mass is less nimble, but it offers a smoother ride. Sports cars tend to have
a low polar moment of inertia for nimble handling, and they also tend to
ride more roughly than passenger cars. Normally, a good balance between ride
and handling can be achieved. The designer does not have to decide between
one or the other extreme.

Hey Mike, James, and All

As to shortening your motor housing and then drilling holes here are some
thoughts I have.

I just completed machining Jays 9”ADC housing down from 11 ½” to 9 ¾” in length
today. I was trying for 91/2” but I had to leave some meat above the coils.
Don’t fret Jay I can take some off the DE plate, hehehehe. His motor will
still have vent slots in the DE plate but there is still going to be steel
beyond the field coils outer winding. You (I feel) could use this area to
drill through without affecting the magnetics to bad. Here are some things
I’ve seen before. First I’ve seen motors that have holes drilled into the
housing (various positions) in between the coils, sometimes they insert
terminals there or run cables out. The outside of a housing is not true to the
machined inside area and can be out by almost a 1/16th of an inch in thickness.
I currently build Lansing drive motors for Rite aid Distribution in Woodland
CA. that have aluminum housings with a steel insert that holds the field, and
there is very little steel between the field coils. All in all I !
 believe
you would affect the magnetics no more than the imperfections of the housings
themselves. Try to keep your holes as even as possible and if possible try to
leave them above the field coil line. I also would have suggested drilling out
the DE plate as posted if that is an option it may be your best bet.

As to my statement and reference to an ABR it’s short for adjustable brush
ring. We could go with VTB (variable timed brushes) if you all like, it’s just
that I chicken peck here so if we can use ABR I’m much faster in my replies,
lol.

Hope this helps

Better not be any batteries in these so called "solar cars"...
Otherwise, the only thing that is solar powered is the on board
battery charger!

Or are these solar cells providing the sole power to the motor?

What is the future of the solar cars anyways? Will anyone on this

You can split and pair field coils up using 4 terminals per coil set instead of
just two. These can be used to run the motor in either series or series
parallel. Prestolite shows this type of two speed motor set up with a
differance in amps and RPMs of around 25%. An example for a high speed / low
speed test is 30 amps @ 3000 RPM series and a jump to 40 amps @ 4000 RPM for a
series parallel connection. Father time told me he has tried to use this on a
race bike with little difference in times, but I think there is much still to
be learned and or experimented with on this type of set-up. Father times
motors he used on his Lazy-boy chair would be a good candidate to plumb the
coils to operate both ways, as I believe they are wound series OEM, and they
have alot of coil turns.
Anyway just one more item I've got on my list of things to do. I do see this
as something an EM would benefit from more so that a full car, as in the latter
just install a bigger motor. For those who are having trouble getting better
top end speed and their RP M's are not in the danger zone then less field coils
would mean higher speeds.
Hope this helps

Hi guys,

Yup you read right, my wife had a few EV questions, well more "what if"
scenarios. We were watching Monster Truck racing and she asked me if it
would be possible to build an Electric Monster Truck. I pondered the idea
and figured that yes it would be possible with something like 4 9" or 10"
ADC with a whack load of lead. She asked if that wouldn't be too heavy, well
since these trucks weigh in at 10,000 lbs anyway, what would say a couple of
thousand pounds of batteries be? In fact since Monster trucks don't need to
go very fun, you wouldn't have to worry about range, just shear power and
torque. It was a fun entertaining exchange I must admit.

The other question was what kind of autonomy could a electric school bus
camper conversion get? Again, with all the space for batteries and a very
strong frame, I imagine someone could conceivably make a camper that could
get at least 100 miles range? Again, this was an interesting thought
experiment. Made me also think about the possibility of a long-haul 18
wheeler EV, would something like that be possible, I mean the truck could
carry a whole trailer full of batteries and each trailer could then have its
own power source for the cab and therefore the drivers could drive to their
destination, drop off their load and spent batteries, pick up a new battery
pack with their new load. Sounds plausible anyway.

Thanks for the time,

Stefano

*waves* that was me! Written under the assumption that I'd have to
build a controller to handle it anyway, and that the S/P switchover
would be _after_ any big capacitors.

work has already been done on the hard part, finding all those little parts
needed to finish the EV.

Thanks again to those who helped make this
happen, especially Bob Rice, Lee Hart and Keith VanSickle.
                                    Yeah Team !!
                                               Jerry Dycus

--- Begin Message --- I'd think you'd be pushing the limits of the motor for max RPM if you tried to make it go faster. I'm pretty sure the OEM Ranger EV is a fixed gear ratio drive.

If so, it is like the factory OEM Chevy S-10EV which has the max speed governed to ~72 mph, which not too coincidentally works out to a motor speed of 10,000 RPM.

A single 13" motor would do.

"has been dyno tested and produced almost 2700 ft. lbs. of torque at
the rear wheels!"

That's more then those trucks currently put out.

I'm nearly certain the silly rules say the trucks can't weigh any LESS
then 10,000 lbs. Otherwise they would! Think about when they are up
in the air and the impact on the swivel points the wheels mount too.
Less weight is always better.

The entire weight of the truck, trailer, and whatever his load is, in
this state anyways, is limited to 80,000 lbs. Kenworth offers an
aluminum frame option. Lightweight trailers are a big deal. If you
are hauling something heavy, or heavy items, you will hit the weight
limit before you run out of space. The weight of those trucks as is,
their poor aerodynamics, and the speeds and distances they travel; I
just can't envision an electric semi for interstate use. Bio-diesel,
ethanol, propane, or natural gas.

Supposedly who ever manufactures turbines for planes is working on
Bio-diesel and ethanol turbine designs..

Make sense considering the uncertainty and instability of
gasoline/diesel/aviation fuel anymore.. I sure don't like being
dependent on it.

Hello to All,

I've posted three of the videos from this past weekend's racing up at the plasmaboy racing video page:

http://www.plasmaboyracing.com/videos.php

Shawn Rutledge wrote:

>Wish I could've been there to see it.

Shawn, here's your chance. You'll need Quick Time Movie player to see it.

Rod Wilde wrote:

>You are proving that you can have a reliable street driven EV that can go to the track on weekends and kick gas car butt!

The first video on the page is the 12.424 run. It's got an incredible wheel stand launch scene that should make Rod Wilde proud, and though not as crazy as his Maniac Mazda's launches, the car does lift the front tires about 3-4 inches above the pavement. The excited track announcer makes the video even more interesting. In fact, he parrots pretty much what Rod just wrote as he narrates the video:

"It's Tim Brehm in the White Zombie....the electric car...the Datsun 1200...the world's quietest street legal car. They 'drove it' to the track tonight....They don't need a trailer for this thing!"

The next line will make Rudman proud:

"I'd like to see the battery charger they plug into!"

Next, he proclaims:

"Look at this....lifted the wheels on that thing...that is awesome!"

Tim's dad was nice enough to run my video camera to get this great footage, but he got a little excited at the end and aimed the camera at the wrong lane and got the other guy's (the looser's) read-out. It's OK, because the 'on target' announcer tells the Zombie's time and speed. I can't remember what kind of muscle car was running in the other lane and the video isn't clear enough for me to tell (Mustang or Camaro?), but it had a powerful V8 you can hear straining as it tries to catch the little 'ol battery powered Datsun!

The other two videos are also fun to watch, especially the one that pits White Zombie against a super hot 12.7 second Mitsu Eclipse, so go check them out.

See Ya....John 'Plasma Boy' Wayland

Whew! That was close! I was sniping at the last 2 minutes when the godamn
E Bay demanded my credit card no. RIGHT NOW! Of course with the car hanging
in the balance I musta muffed the damn no, " Not Valid card no." comes up
and yo can't just click back and try again. Like a tenth of a second is an
eternity in drag racing, diddling with numbers takes EVen longer. Whythehell
don't that ask that shit BEFORE the bidding gets hot an' heavy?? Will write
a strongly worded letter to the E Bay Folks!

But when I got back, I had lost, but ,What Freedon EV Won! Way to go
Jerry, he clicked at the right time! I came up on the EV prioductuin List,
too with the good news!

OK we have just begun! I stand ready to get the check off to the guy
selling it. James Worden, I think? Will be getting back to those of ya that
offered the bucks to buy it. Looks like Dycus Motors will have two
divisions<g>! And you thought I retired, ha ha! Been busier than EVer.
Lottsa stuff, Jerry just called to share in the victory.we talked at length
about powrr trains suspensions on and on. There is a hellova lot of stuff in
an auto, think about it! I am! Now the fun has begun, building the car
bodies. The molds are up here in RI, We'll see if we can get them, too. They
are at a shipyard that builds boats. Well, we hava lot of boat talent in our
midst, anyhow, EVen I diddled with boats in my deformative years<g>!

The list will be our most valued asset, youse guys are a national
treasure, we hope to make EV's a reality in OUR life time.

> Absolutely amazing! That car has huge potential! I can't wait!

> Yup I felt that way when I reached into the Sunrise to shake James hand
and say " Welcome to Connecticut " on his Bos-NYC run on one charge. Like me
he had his 15 seconds of fame, Gees!? Was it THAT long.We now have our
mission cut out for us. Lets take a ride!

Seeya......loggin off for a great nites sleep!
