In that post, I wanted to have an dual coupler L2 EVSE that could run off one 6kW power source which would either charge one EV at 6kW or using power management in the EVSE would charge two plugins at 3kW. Some further research showed Coulomb's new CT-4000 can do just that: https://www.chargepoint.com/files/CT4000-Data-Sheet.pdf http://insideevs.com/chargepoint-introduces-ct4000-series-charger-with-unique-power-sharing-option/ On an earlier day, I had checked on a Facebook (fb) work site shown on http://brucedp14.altervista.org/evse14/ It seems fb has plenty of ca$h, and yanked out almost-all of its fairly new EVSE they had just put in, and replaced them with different new EVSE. All the Blink L2 EVSE had been removed, and replaced with Coulomb CT-4000 L2 dual coupler EVSE. And the older CT-2020 fb dual coupler L2 they had installed, had been replaced with the newer CT-4000 L2 dual coupler EVSE http://brucedp14.altervista.org/evse14/evse-ca-menlo-park-facebook-20140901-006l.jpg Since the older CT-2020 did not have the aforementioned power management, it is likely the multiple CT-4000 EVSE shown installed as two per parking-lot-island-squares are using the previously existing wiring, thus each coupler offers a full 6kW (wealthy fb is not likely to be so concerned about power management with that installed EVSE). Later, using plugshare.com I found a few EVSE sites I could visit that needed more detail added to their listings. I had hoped to hit them on the way back home after I did a reconnoiter to confirm some details concerning my up-n-coming VA Hospital surgery in Oct. I've figured out my worst-case methods (using the local bus system), and my best-case route to drive back home (my neck will be painful to twist and turn about, so I chose a less demanding driving route). [sidebar On that slow and careful 25mph school zone route, and I noticed how many kids were still lugging around many large and heavy school books in their overloaded backpack/bookbags (some of which looked bigger and heavier than the kid - it was a wonder that they could even make the walk home). This brought to mind my experience way-way-back growing up in the 1960's at that age? So, why are we still using paper? All those books could easily fit on a tablet or as a downloadable file - this area was after all Silicon Valley). Perhaps if I am lucky enough to stick around a while longer, I will see these school kids tooling around on Movpaks(?) ref http://electric-vehicle-discussion-list.413529.n4.nabble.com/EVLN-Movpak-e-skateboard-backpack-EV-is-all-kinds-of-awesome-video-tp4671416.html EVLN: Movpak e-skateboard+backpack EV is all kinds of awesome (video) ] Afterward, I still had enough energy left over from all that walker-walking around, that I went on to the EVSE sites on my list. One of which was Stanford Shopping Center, where the affluent frequent. They had added two L2 GE Watt-station EVSE in a side parking-lot http://brucedp14.altervista.org/evse14/evse-evse-ca-stanford-shopping-center-ge-20140905-002l.jpg of a store selling everything to do with containers ($$$) I cane-hobbled my way over to check out the store and its clientele. Inside was a nice looking store, but sheesh, the mark up everything was excessive ($5 roll of plain scotch tape? Me thinks someone found a way to open a unique store to bilk the rich). I was able to follow a couple of their customers and once outside, politely inform them of the up-n-coming Silicon Valley EAA Rally at De Anza College in Cupertino, CA on 9/20 10a-4p http://eaasv.org/rally/ http://brucedp14.altervista.org/eaasvr14/ Nearby, I was also able to chat with an affluent looking Mom whilst she was corralling her two kids out of harms-way of parking garage traffic. She was nice enough to at least give me the amount of time one would get when asking for the time of day, but I knew not to expect any more. I was able to at lease give her and her listening kids the words that the EVent would not only informative but a lot of fun for the family. Interestingly, at that different L2 EVSE, a BMW i3 was plugged in. It was my first time seeing one up close (something I get to do more of at the EVent above). I was surprised that the i3 EV was about the same length as the Leaf EV charging in the EV spot next to it. Until I actually try to sit in one, I can only fear that the large body God gave me will not fit in the i3 any better than it does in the Leaf ::sigh:: (I hope to see if I fit at the EVent) Another site I hit, was a richy-rich type hotel where finding a parking space was at a premium and they only had one L2 6kW GE Dura-station EVSE out front http://brucedp14.altervista.org/evse14/evse-ca-menlo-park-rosewood-hotel-ge-durastation-20140905-plugshare51810l.jpg As I came up to it, I saw a silver Tesla-S EV was parked in it, that was not plugged in (likely because it was an available parking spot with the thinking, I'm driving an EV so I can park there). The driver and his young teenage daughter were sitting in it not talking to each other, but occupying themselves with finger-digging the screens of their handheld-devices (cell-phone/tablet) http://mybrokenphone.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/07/Blog-12.jpg I came up to the driver's side at some distance wearing a smile so as to be non-threatening, and motioned I wanted to chat. He electrically rolled down his driver-side window, and I said, "You're just showing off that you have a huge pack aren't you by not plugging in?" (not said as a derogatory statement, but with a calm non-threatening joking smile, but though he was a well-educated person, he automatically assumed I wanted him to either plugin or leave). He hadn't, but his daughter had stopped finger-digging and was watching him to see how he handled the truth. He said he would be leaving soon. I took that moment to sneak-in whether he would be in the area to attend the (above) EVent. He said he wouldn't, as he was just visiting the area (must be one of those long distance Tesla EV tours he had taken his daughter on). He rolled up his window signaling our conversation had ended. It wasn't that he was being rude as much as being wealthy (they like to think differently than those lowly little people). Speaking through his rolled up window, I thanked him for his time, and proceeded on to the main lobby to gather some facts about that business' EVSE to update the plugshare listing. Sure enough, even the staff were skimming their way through life, paying only enough attention to what they thought their purview was (what responsibilities would keep them from getting fired). It turns out the front desk person said 'they' do not handle their EVSE, that is relegated to the outside luggage/doormen (the front desk-people don't "do" EV-charging). As I was about to leave, in a side parking lot I chatted with a man that appeared to be in that same salary bracket as the Tesla driver, but was a much more down to Earth person. He was interested in a Tesla as he had mentioned getting Tesla-X. I let him know he should take the time to do his research on the Internet and that there is a whole lot more free information he could get if he would only come to the EVent (above). I hope he considers coming from his East SF Bay home in Dublin to get the information he could use. I also reminded him it is a great way to bring the kids and educate them as well. By that time, the Tesla-S EV blocking the EVSE had finally decided to move on, and free up the EV spot for one of the business' customers to come use ( ... what a considerate driver ... lets hope his daughter is a better person). Previously, I had stopped off at a site that had two L2 EVSE that I usually found unused (perhaps not the best location to install EVSE). But that time, a Prius-plug-in pih was there. I got to talking to the driver as he was unplugging. He lives 11 miles away (the e-range of his pih) and was plugged in so as to drive home on the free power (but fairly soon it won't be free any longer as that city is going to begin applying an EVSE use-fee). After talking to him, it was clear to me his driving needs were perfect for an EV, but he said he was a 'double E' (an Engineer) and liked pih. Despite my thoughts, I knew it would be counter-productive to try to talk him into making his next vehicle purchase be an EV. Its likely he will stick by his first decision to not go EV until it get too financially-painful for him at the pump. In any case, I also let him know of the EVent, and how plugshare is better than the Chargepoint site/app he was using as plugshare shows all EVSE brands, with very up-to-date driver comments and images. Much has changed in these few years with so many plugins now on the road. Whereas there are many Leaf EVs in less affluent areas of the SF Bay area, just a few miles away in more affluent areas, there are Tesla EVs galore. An to think that many-many years ago, there were no cars, airplanes or technology like today. Way back then, one could make a good livelihood out of cutting down the huge Redwood trees in the nearby Santa Cruz mountains http://oldphotoguy.com/img/s3/v26/p43020729-3.jpg http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-XdnoX5WSLY4/UpYWQ_YsXeI/AAAAAAAAADM/NcCl7vp7IIE/s1600/discoverytree.jpg and drag them using oxen http://realsmartgroup.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/05/oxen.jpeg to sailing ships in the make shift ports http://realsmartgroup.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/05/turning_basin.jpeg for further processing elsewhere.
