Re: [EVDL] Testing batteries

Lee,
I have a tow dolly (2 wheel, single axle where you can attach the driven
wheels of a towed vehicle). This is a well used but useful tool, once in a
while.
Reason to buy instead of rent one was that i did not have a vehicle that
U-haul approves of for renting their dolly.
I have rented it out a couple times by requiring a full deposit in cash for
the value of the dolly($500) and signing a written agreement that i commit
to return their deposit, minus any damages and minus weekly rent ($50 a
week).
If they did not return it by an agreed date then they had bought it for the
deposit amount.
Several times it was rented and people had a leasurely week to move what
they wanted to move.
After a couple of those, the last guy called if he could keep it and i did
not need it any longer so i agreed.
A year or so later i needed a dolly again, so i bought another cheap
well-used one and have used it many times myself as well as allowed friends
to use it.
Maybe this gives an idea?
Cor.

Tesla Model X 100d

Another Tesla Model X electric SUV has landed in India, and this time
around, it’s the 100D variant. The Tesla Model X that was previously
imported into India through the private route and registered to billionaire
Prashant Ruia was the top of the line P 90D variant. The 100D variant, which
while being very quick, is still a few steps behind the P 90D in terms of
outright performance. The electric SUV, imported straight from the United
States, which is currently the only country that manufactures Tesla cars and
SUVs, can hit 100 Kph in a sportscar-challenging 5 seconds. In fact, this
kind of performance makes the Tesla 100D virtually faster than almost all
other luxury SUVs sold in India.

And it has no engine. That’s because like all Tesla cars, the Model X 100D
is powered by electric motors driven by lithium ion batteries. The electric
SUV weighs a hefty 2.5 tons thanks to all the batteries that drive the twin
electric motors, one on the front axle and the other on the rear axle.

Needless to say, the Model X 100D features an all wheel drive layout. Top
speed is rated at 250 Kph while the range per charge stands at 475
kilometers, which is very good indeed. What this effectively means is that
the Model X can be used on a day to day basis even in a country like India
where electric car charging infrastructure is at its infancy.

In the United States, the Tesla Model X 100D is priced at $ 96,000, which
translates to about Rs. 65 lakhs in Indian currency. However, importing such
a car through the private import route costs significantly higher thanks to
the hefty import duties involved.

Effectively, we’re looking at a price of about Rs. 1.5 crores for this car
when imported privately into India. The Tesla Model X 100D is said to be
bought by someone in Mumbai, and will soon be sporting MH plates, which
means that it will be registered as a private car in India. Stay tuned for
more pictures of this car on Indian streets.

First New Zealand-made electric rubbish trucks about to hit Palmerston North
10/08/2018 Janika ter Ellen

The first New Zealand-made electric trucks are about to hit the streets of
Palmerston North.

The city council has bought two trucks for rubbish and recycling collection,
marking the start of the council's plan to convert its entire vehicle fleet
to electric.

"These are the first that are fully constructed in New Zealand. Usually up
till now they've been conversions from existing diesel trucks," Paul
Compton, Palmerston North City Council logistics and support manager, told
Newshub.

The recycling and rubbish trucks replace two old diesel ones and will
prevent 30 tonnes of carbon from being released into our air every year -
about the same impact as taking eight cars off the road.

They can travel surprisingly far on one charge, around 160 to 180
kilometres.

The two trucks cost $736,000, which is about the same as the old diesel ones
over seven years. Just under half that price was covered by the Energy
Efficiency and Conservation Authority (EECA), which has cash grants to give
new projects like this.

CEO Andrew Caseley said New Zealand is headed for a major rush toward
electric in about five years' time. Currently there are just under 10,000
electric vehicles on our roads.

"I believe that the growth will be exponential. It will look almost
vertical," he told Newshub.

It's pretty steep already, with the number on our roads doubled in the last
year.

That would work for a cheap tool; like if I was renting a multimeter.
But not for big-ticket items. People won't pay a deposit that would
cover the cost if they didn't return it.

Big outfits (like car rental companies, etc.) can rent expensive things
for low deposits because they can do enough credit checks, and lock up

That's pretty darn cheap for lead, and unheard-of for lithium. Are they

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — Government regulators have subpoenaed Tesla as they dig
deeper into CEO Elon Musk's recent disclosure about a potential buyout of
the electric car maker, according to media reports.

The subpoena from the Securities and Exchange Commission demands information
from each of Tesla's nine directors, according to a story published
Wednesday in The Wall Street Journal [
https://www.wsj.com/articles/sec-sends-subpoena-to-tesla-in-probe-over-musk-tweets-1534366752?shareToken=ste2e42039b70e4e049eab5e47f68586d7=article_email_share
]. The newspaper cited an unidentified person familiar with the matter after
Fox Business News reported the SEC's move.

Both Tesla and the SEC declined to comment Wednesday.

The SEC opened an inquiry shortly after Musk surprised investors with an
August 7 tweet [
https://twitter.com/elonmusk/status/1026872652290379776
] revealing that he had lined up the financing to buy all the Tesla stock
from shareholders willing to sell.

The subpoena signals regulators have now opened a formal investigation into
whether Musk was telling the truth in his tweet about have financing locked
up for a deal that analysts have estimated would require $25 billion to $50
billion.

Under a scenario sketched out by Musk in a Monday blog post [
https://www.tesla.com/blog/update-taking-tesla-private
], the deal would cost at the lower end of those estimates. Musk also
revealed in the same post that he had been talking to Saudi Arabia's
sovereign wealth fund about providing the money for a buyout that would end
Tesla's eight-year history as a publicly held company, but he added that the
financing was still contingent on due diligence.

Corporate governance experts say that caveat shows the financing of the deal
isn't finalized, as Musk initially indicated, a contradiction that could be
used to prove he deliberately misled investors with his tweet.

After Musk dropped his bombshell, Tesla's stock surged 11 percent in one
day, damaging a class of investors who had been betting the company's shares
would decline. Musk has had a long-running battle with that group of
investors, who are known as "short sellers" in Wall Street's parlance.

Tesla's stock has backtracked since that one-day pop last week, but at least
two lawsuits have been filed against the company on behalf of shareholders
alleging Musk broke the law with his tweet, and now the SEC is taking a
closer look too.

Meanwhile, Tesla's board has formed a three-person committee to assess a
potential buyout by Musk while leaving the door open for other offers, too.
The independence of one director on Tesla's buyout committee, Brad Buss, has
been questioned by two shareholder advisory firms.

The Honda Super Cub is a legendary retro-styled motorbike that has been in
continuous production since 1958. With over 100 million units sold, it holds
the record for being the most produced motor vehicle in history.

For all of its strengths however, the little retro scooter has one major
downside: its internal combustion engine. Sure, it’s a gas sipper instead of
guzzler, but it’s gas nonetheless. Until now, that is, as the Super Cub is
finally being reborn as an EV.

Honda has been teasing us with its own plans to roll out a factory produced
EV version of their best selling motorbike. They unveiled an impressive
looking EV-Cub concept at the 2009 Tokyo motor show with production planned
for 2010. However, in true Honda EV style, the year came and went without
any new mention. Then in 2016 the company again promised that the EV-Cub
would become a reality, indicating production would take just two more
years.

Well, it’s 2018 now and they don’t seem much closer. To be fair, Honda has
announced some pretty cool EV concepts recently, but the company has a
history of underwhelming achievements on the EV front (what ever happened to
the Fit EV?!)

But one company isn’t waiting for Honda, and has instead begun producing
electric versions of the current gas-powered Honda Super Cubs.

To build the eCubs, the company starts with a stock Honda Super Cub and then
goes to work on it, gutting the engine and gas tank to replace them with a
1,000 watt rear wheel electric hub motor.

The extra room where the engine used to reside now leaves space for a
Panasonic Li-ion battery to slide in under the seat. The battery is
removable so that it can be taken inside to charge while the motorbike
remains parked outside. It’s a small vehicle, but not
roll-it-into-your-apartment small.

Shanghai Customs began producing their own eCubs two years ago, which
originally came with a 2,000 W motor and could reach speeds of up to 80 km/h
(50 mph). They have recently announced a second platform known as the eCub2,
which is designed more for city riding and commuting with tamers specs.

The eCub2 eschews an instrument panel and instead includes a mount for your
smartphone, allowing you to view all of the relevant riding data directly on
your screen. And you won’t find many electrical wires on the E-Cub2. The
wiring is all run internally to avoid ruining the cool retro styling of the
vehicle.

The eCub2’s range is 40 km (25 mi) at 45 km/h (28 mph) with a standard 80 kg
(176 lb) rider. While that’s nowhere near the range of more conventional
electric commuters such as the Zero electric motorcycle, it’s likely enough
for most city commutes.

For those that already own a Honda Super Cub (that would be millions of
people, presumably), Shanghai Customs doesn’t want you to have to throw it
out just to upgrade to electric drive. They’ve produced a conversion kit
that will allow anyone to convert their own Super Cub at home and build a
custom DIY EV Cub.

The company is mostly targeting their domestic market, where government
regulations cracking down on pollution have made it difficult to own a
motorcycle in cities. You can still do it, but it can cost over $60,000 for
a license plate. Compare that to an electric motorcycle, which costs less
than $10 to title and plate. With such strong government incentives towards
two-wheeled EVs, there should be a large market for E-Cubs for years to
come.

Electrek’s Take

We’ve been seeing an interesting mix of retro and vintage electric bicycles
and scooters lately, from the 36 mph (58 km/h) Vintage Cycles’ Scrambler S
to the 30 mph (48 km/h) ONYX CTY.

In my opinion, these e-bikes and e-scooters are helping to expand the
audience of two-wheeled EVs by offering interesting designs that are a far
cry from the cookie cutter budget e-bikes found pretty much everywhere these
days.

Though the eCub2 is a bit slower at around 28-30 mph (45-48 km/h), I still
believe it has great potential for city commuters – one of the largest
markets for these types of e-scooters. City speeds rarely reach faster than
30 mph (48 km/h) anyways, so I’d definitely ride one to

Our spy photographers have provided more photos of the upcoming G20 BMW 3
Series, this time giving us our first look at an all-electric variant. The
battery-powered 3 Series will be part of BMW Group’s electrified portfolio
with other models like the iX3 and the MINI Cooper EV.

Visually, the test mule doesn’t differ all that much from a previous
sighting of a non-M Sport prototype, with the headlamps, bottom fogs and
taillights all on show. The car still features quite a lot of camouflage on
it but the ‘Electric Test Vehicle’ tags on the body gives away plenty.

Those rear ‘exhaust outlets’ you see are merely decorative pieces as our
spies pointed out, serving no real purpose. They added that a Tesla Model 3
was also part of the testing convoy although it wasn’t seen together with
the wrapped mule.

Unsurprisingly, the Model 3 will be one of the 3 Series EV’s rivals, along
with an EQ sedan from Mercedes-Benz in the future. Electric mobility is part
of BMW’s Number One > Next strategy, where it plans to offer 25 models with
electrified drive systems by 2025.

The 3 Series EV will sport the brand’s next-generation electric powertrains
that feature a more compact drive unit as well as being modular and scalable
for use in a number of models. This avoids the need for custom platforms as
was the case with the i3 [EV] and i8 [pih].

BOSTON (WBZ/CNN) - A Massachusetts mother saved her children's lives after
rushing to pull them out of a toy car moments before it went up in flames.

The fire consumed a child's toy electric vehicle. Just moments before
Michelle Kline’s two kids were in it.

"I think that was the really scary thing because they were buckled in and
they are both little so neither of them could have gotten themselves out,”
Kline said.

Fortunately, Kline was feet away as her kids started driving up the small
hill in her neighbor's yard.

"It was just kind of that hot electrical smell and I saw some smoke coming
out of the little hood,” she said.

She rushed over and got her 16-month-old and 3-year-old out of the vehicle.

She said within two minutes the toy was charred.

The Klines recently bought the $500 “Sportrax Awesome XL Model” as a
birthday present.

Kline said the manufacturer wouldn't talk with them, but did talk with the
fire inspector.

"They did say to the fire inspector that they did put in a lot of failsafes
into the car to sort of protect people from this happening, which is again,
part of the reason why we did purchase this car,” she said.

North Andover Fire Chief Bill McCarthy said it appears the fire started
where the batteries are located. But it's hard to tell because there's not
much left.

Concerned about this happening to other children, the department notified
the Consumer Product Safety Commission, the fire marshal, the distributor
and the manufacturer.

"Just to see if this is an isolated incident with this one particular
vehicle or is it a potential issue that it's happened somewhere else,”
McCarthy said.

The Kline kids, meanwhile, are OK.

"Last night when he was going to bed, he said good night to his jeep on the
front lawn,” Michelle Kline said.

They are now relegated to playing with the old school pedal bike.

Re: [EVDL] Mom yanks kids from e-toy-suv w/ smoking pack before it flames

2018-08-17 Thread Doug Weathers via EV
(Hi everyone, I'm back to the EVDL after some years away. More on that later.)

That wasn't a Powerwheels, it was something else.

The CBS News page that Bruce linked to says it was a "SPORTrax Awesome XL" and
it cost $500.

Here's an Amazon page, which appears to match the vehicle in the video:

http://a.co/7DlP5v5

That leads to the manufacturer, which is Rolling Hills Trading:

https://www.rollinghillstrading.com/shop/sportrax-cars

Here's an assembly video:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YkNQiPTQsFg

Note that it has a motor on each wheel and has a wireless remote control that
can steer the front wheels electrically. The Amazon page also lists that it
includes an MP3 player. Clearly it's got some fancy electronics in there. It's
a big RC car.

I wasn't able to turn up anything about the batteries besides the info that it
contains two 12v batteries. The manufacturer's website no longer has that
particular car listed, but it does sell parts, including batteries. They sell a
12v 10Ah battery for $20 and two 12v batteries (Ah not listed) wired in
parallel for $30. Not sure if these were what was in this car, and I can't find
chemistry information.

The article says they were driving up a hill, which the pictures support.
That'll heat things up some, which could be an ignition source.

That fire doesn't look like anything to do with lead acid batteries. There was
some serious fuel burning there, and I agree with Lee - it didn't look like
fire-retardant plastic. Could it be lithium? What does 20Ah of lithium look
like when it burns? Was the car made out of flammable plastic?

Lithium or lead, this is not the sort of thing you'd expect from a
properly-designed kid's toy.

Did the kids fill it up with gasoline before driving, like their parents always
do?

Well, it's an "open source" design .
The complete schematics and software are all on the web. The earlier
rev.A version would be simpler to build yourself. Also quite a number of
people have built their own versions, with different micros, relays,
features, etc.

The big 30 amp relays are the biggest cost item. If you don't need to
charge/discharge at high current, you can save a lot by using smaller
relays.

For those that find relays "out of fashion", you can use solid-state
relays. Just be aware that they are more expensive, and have some safety
concerns (they tend to fail SHORTED).

I use my Battery Balancer for this <http://sunrise-ev.com/balancer.htm>.
You can program it to test up to 80 cells or batteries sequentially. It
can measure voltage and current, and control a charger and load bank.
For example, have the program:

- charge each cell to a defined "full" voltage and current
- then load it with a defined load
- measure the time to a defined "empty" voltage
- record the amphours
- recharge the cell back to "full"
- step to the next cell or battery

I'm using one now to test a set of CALB cells. I only bothered to
connect one relay board, so it tests a group of 8 cells. Then I offload
the data, and re-connect it to the next batch of 8 cells.

The Balancer ins't really a commercial "turn-key" product: It's just
something I built because I couldn't find anything affordable that did
what I want. But I do have bare and assembled boards, and sell them on a
one-off basis as needed.

There's a world of difference between 'self extinguishing' plastic and
non flamable. Get enough of the plastic burning in the first place and
it becomes its own ignition source.
