Re: [EVDL] Road Trips: plugin vs EV cost per mile
You may be right, though you aren't taking into account the other factors, most importantly the long term maintenance. However, I think the bigger factor is the amount of time you need to spend charging on a long road trip. If you only drive 200 or so miles a day, no problem. You can charge at night. But if you are like most people and drive 500+, you'll need at least two charging stops, which will add a few hours to your travel. You might be able to combine that with meal stops or point of interest stops, but I don't think the infrastructure is that opportune yet. In the future, when we have faster charging and competition on kWh pricing, I hope we'll be on the other side of the inflection point. Re: [EVDL] Road Trips: plugin vs EV cost per mile
I did not find this to be the case in a Tesla. You can get enough charge to continue the trip in 30 minutes after that the charging rate starts to drop. I didn't find that it took me a noticeable amount of time longer than a gasoline car. Of course, I am not one of those people that stop for bathroom breaks and then right back on the road. I like to stretch my legs get something to drink or eat. We never had to wait on the car to charge, by the time we were through it was done enough to continue sometimes as little as 15 minutes and other times 30 minutes... if we eat lunch we might be 45 minutes. i few times I had to move the car to avoid idle fees because we weren't through. Re: [EVDL] Road Trips: plugin vs EV cost per mile
So, you don't plug your Hybrids in at all? I have heard the Prius gets relatively poor mileage until the engine warms up. During this warmup time, it gets about 35 to 40 miles per gallon. If your driving consists of purely short, say five mile, trips - you will not get 50 miles per gallon. You can also get less than 50 miles per gallon by driving very fast, over 73 miles per hour. Obviously, if you drive very aggressively the mileage will also suffer. What about a hilly area does it get 50 miles per gallon? I have a Tesla model 3 and I get on average 260Wh/mile. I drove from Alabama to New Orleans 435 miles and it cost me 38.46 on Tesla Superchargers. 8.8 cents a mile. But like others have said it is only the second long trip and I have had the car for over a year. Most of the time I charge in the garage at 10 cents a KWh. Re: [EVDL] LREV vs SREV
Granted you can save some money and buy a used EV with short range. I am sold on the Supercharging Network of Tesla. I got 90 miles of range in less than 10 minutes on my last trip which was enough to get me to my Hotel where I charged for free. Then next night I again charged at the hotel on 120 v which was enough to get home. So I paid a minuscule amount on that trip. Then there is the cool factor of nearly Autonomous driving. Top that off with software updates which makes the car better every few months and The Tesla is just amazing. Of course I am biased since my TM3 is my first EV. > Mark Hanson via EV wrote: >> It seems that it's cheaper for taking long road trips to buy a Prius >> Prime vs a pricier Tesla or Bolt with a 60kwh battery pack and pay an >> average of 28c per kWh average on the road at level 3 fast charging >> stations. I've been driving EVs since the 1970's, but they've all been short-range "around town" cars. I used them for all my daily driving. But I always had a gas car as well, for long trips. In 2000 we bought one of the first Prius. It became our long-distance car. At 50+ mpg and SULEV, it fit the bill nicely. Today, we have a Leaf for around-town driving, and a plug-in Prius for trips. -- If you're not stubborn, you'll give up too soon. Re: [EVDL] Road Trips: plugin vs EV cost per mile (4 cents average)
People rarely do the math. Say they do a 660 mile trip 3 times a year and they drive the normal American 15,000 miles a year, then the trip mileage is only 13% of their total usage. Miniscule. For a pure EV. Yes, they pay 28 cents per kwh for that 13% of the time, but all the rest of the time they pay very reduced rates overnight. Our utility offers EV charging overnight at 3 cents per kWh. That's almost TEN TIMES cheaper than when they charge on the road. So 87% of 3 cents and 13% of 28 cents AVERAGES to 6 cents per kWh or about 2 cents a mile Even if they pay 10 cents per kWh, then the annual average electricity cost is 12.3 cents per kWh or about 4 cents a mile. Who cares that they spend a little extra on trips when the annual average cost is so low. And for my family, daughter has a Prius Prime who's daily use is under 30 miles and my Volt for my 35 mile days. And at 87% electric, I'm still only 13% the environmental concerns of a gas car. [EVDL] EVLN: BAIC handbag EV on Internet-Valentine's-Day.cn r-nedc:300km
https://www.electrive.com/2019/05/22/a-small-car-or-a-big-handbag/ A small electric car or a very roomy handbag? May 22, 2019 Carrie Hampel [image https://www.electrive.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/05/baic-bjev-handbag.png BAIC BJEV China baic-bjev-handbag ] How about an electric car made to look like a handbag? That’s what BAIC BJEV has come up with for its launch edition EV released on China’s ‘Internet Valentine’s Day’ on May 20. While they’ve made some questionable style choices, other features seem rather fun. To start with the obvious, those handbag handles on top of the roof is an accessory you might want to get rid of sooner or later. But, as you will get noticed in the little electric car anyway – despite it being about the same length as a Smart – you might want to make good use of the LED displays at the front and back that allow designing emoticons or messages for public display. Just be careful what you say, as this future-fancy, cheap, flashy little car with a questionable top has upgraded voice recognition. But handbag handles aside (please!), according to Gasgoo China Automotive News, the performance data isn’t bad either: The Lite-R300 has an electric motor at the rear axle with a maximum output of 40kW and torque peak of 140 Nm. A 30kWh lithium battery enables an NEDC range of up to 300km. The little electric car can charge up to 80% of its battery capacity within 30 minutes in fast charging mode. Admittedly also appealing, is the three futuristic, liquid crystal display screens which make up an instrument panel, a centre console and an entertainment screen. Customers also welcome the xenon headlights, frameless car doors, aluminium alloy rims, panoramic roof and automotive backup camera apparently, and indeed, the price of between 14,400 – 16,454 euros after subsidies makes the BAIC BJEV Lite-R300 a most affordable electric car. However, the exact availability and how much the car will eventually cost are unknown at this point. It feels like Honda isn’t ready to generate more buzz yet. According to InsideEVs, the Japanese automaker said that “through the end of the year, it will send invitations to customers to place orders.” Again, “through the end of the year” is kind of vague and so, there is no way of guessing when it will be. One interesting bit, though, the reservation website actually allows you to choose from five available colors. But really, that’s about all the website has to offer as far as insight into the car. Whether or not the car will look exactly as the prototype revealed earlier this year is not clear. Having said that, the details remain as obscure as when it made its appearance in February. More than 200 engineers and technical experts from global automakers, charging equipment manufacturers, charging networks and related companies gathered at Electrify America's Center of Excellence laboratory to test the next-generation technologies for electric vehicle charging. Several global automakers tested vehicles at the symposium including Audi, Fiat Chrysler, Karma Automotive and BMW of North America. BMW even brought pre-production versions of their yet-to-be-released MINI Electric and BMW iX3 for testing. “As a leader in the development of EV infrastructure, Electrify America was excited to host industry game-changers as we work to set an international standard for EV charging technology,” said Cliff Fietzek, director of technology of Electrify America. “Electrify America recognizes the impact of this technology on the future of electric vehicle charging, specifically in creating customer convenience and encouraging EV adoption.” While the symposium was held at Electrify America's headquarters in Reston, Virginia, it was co-hosted by Hubject, and supported by CharIN. The participants came together to test conformance and interoperability for electric vehicles and the supporting charging infrastructure. The goal for the 11th International Testing Symposium was to facilitate cooperation between international automakers implementing the non-proprietary Combined Charging System (CCS). Attendees also shared information, research, best practices and data in an effort to help accelerate the implementation of ISO 15188, commonly known as Plug & Charge technology. Plug & Charge allows the charging station to automatically authenticate the vehicle, like Tesla Superchargers do. The owner simply plugs in the vehicle - that's all. There's no need for a credit card, or RFID card to swipe. The owner's account is automatically billed for the charging session. Electrify America has already announced that they will begin implementing Plug & Charge technology by the end of this year. -press release- Electrify America Hosts International Testing Symposium for Combined Charging System Global automakers, charging equipment manufacturers gathered at Electrify America Center of Excellence laboratory to test next-generation technologies for electric vehicle charging Reston, VA (May 21, 2019) – Electrify America’s Center of Excellence technology laboratory provided the setting on May 16-17 for the 11th International Testing Symposium for the Combined Charging System, bringing together more than 200 engineers and technical experts from global automakers, charging equipment manufacturers, charging networks and related companies to test the next-generation technologies for electric vehicle charging. Re: [EVDL] Road Trips: plug-in vs. EV cost per mile
Hi Paul, The Prius & Prius Prime gets 50mpg (for the last 165K miles avg). Is 260W/hr per mile or 3.85 miles per KWH at the AC outlet? Sounds about right for a Tesla-3, a bit heavier than a 2800 Spark (I get 5 miles per KWH or 200W/hr per mile, the heavier Leaf is 4.3 miles per KWH or 232W/hr per mile but that's on the DC car gauge). You have to measure your watt hours used at the AC outlet, quite a bit more after charging-inverter/battery inefficiencies. Have a Renewable Energy Day, Mark Mark E. Due to go on sale in 2020, a concept will be unveiled later this year and the brand claims it will transfer the spirit of the iconic pony car into a truly 21st century Tesla Model Y rival. Imagined by Autocar (above) the new model has yet to be officially named, although Ford has reportedly ditched the originally floated ‘Mach 1’ tag because of strong public opinion against the use of the branding historically reserved for Mustangs. However, the Blue Oval recently applied to trademark the ‘Mach-E’ nameplate, which seems a perfect fit, given the car’s brief. The new car will be the first Ford designed as an electric car from the ground up, with a bespoke new platform enabling both rear and four-wheel drive. It will crown the brand’s wide-reaching electrification plan under which European customers will be offered a hybrid, plug-in hybrid or fully electric version of every new model launched. The only technical detail Ford has officially revealed is the car’s range: it will be capable of 370 miles of WLTP-certified range on a single charge, beating the Tesla Model X (351 miles) and Jaguar I-Pace (292 miles). A less expensive version with less battery capacity and range is also expected. a black and red car © Provided by Haymarket Media Group Ford claims charging will be “effortless” and it is “redesigning the ownership experience to ensure it addresses customer pain points that currently hold back broad [electric car] adoption”. The car’s performance remains undisclosed, although chairman Bill Ford has previously claimed it “is going to go like hell”. At a Bank of America summit last month, a Ford presentation showed that it would offer a higher-performance variant of the electric crossover, targeting the more accelerative versions of Tesla’s EVs. Although it is not officially confirmed, reports suggest Ford will reveal the car’s name along with the concept before the year is out. Like many of Ford’s recent models, it’ll be a globally engineered vehicle with few changes between regions. UK deliveries are tipped to start in late-2020. It’s not the only EV in Ford’s product plan, because the Michigan-based maker is also working on a more affordable electric crossover. Codenamed CX430, it will be based on the latest Focus platform and be similar to the Kuga. The CX430 has been in Ford’s product plan for several years. The long-awaited push into electrification comes after news that Ford will be dropping former best-sellers from its US line-up: the Taurus, Fusion and Focus, alongside the Fiesta. Ford’s supermini never found huge popularity in the US, but the momentous decision to end Ford’s 110-year presence in the US passenger saloon market sent a clear signal that profitability, not diversity, is the new focus for the brand. https://www.caradvice.com.au/758377/2020-opel-corsa-leaked/ 2020 Opel Corsa leaked May 22, 2019 James Wong [images https://media.caradvice.com.au/image/private/c_fill,q_auto,f_auto,w_770,h_382/vu0pzrkfgzywxedgfyop.jpg https://media.caradvice.com.au/image/private/c_fill,q_auto,f_auto,w_770,h_382/lssemovrcdxtfmrbg9yu.jpg https://media.caradvice.com.au/image/private/c_fill,q_auto,f_auto,w_770,h_382/fktxurqeg8bsnwxwgd5k.jpg ] All-new hatchback surfaces online in EV form months ahead of scheduled debut in Frankfurt. The next-generation Opel Corsa has been leaked on an online forum, ahead of its official reveal slated for later this year. Posted to French forum WorldScoop, the revealing images were allegedly posted to a news website by accident and taken down, though that didn't stop one user from saving hi-res files and publishing them. The eye-catching orange vehicle you see pictured is the electric model, which appears to be dubbed 'Corsa-e'. This model is the first EV from the Opel and Vauxhall brands, and shares its underpinnings with the new Peugeot e-208. Like the EV variant, the wider Corsa range also makes the switch to PSA's CMP scalable architecture for compact models, which already underpins the likes of the new Peugeot 208 and the DS 3 Crossback. The new underpinnings not only allow for electrified powertrains, but also are a lot lighter (the Corsa is apparently around 100kg lighter than before) which should translate to notable improvements in fuel efficiency. From the outset the Corsa looks a lot wider and lower than the current model, doing away with the tall and skinny proportions that were so common across previous-generation light hatchbacks. Up front is a new interpretation of Opel's corporate face, with diamond-like motifs in the front grille and intake, along with sharper headlights for a more upmarket and aggressive look. Speaking of the headlights, the company's 'IntelliLux' Matrix LED technology will be available for the first time, also a first for the segment. The rear offers a clean and curvy look that is somewhat generic, though the LED tail-lights of the vehicle in the images are consistent with Opel's 'hook' light signature at the front. The cabin looks to be a pretty decent step up compared to the outgoing model, with a completely digital instrument cluster and large central touchscreen dominating the dashboard of this EV variant. It appears the Corsa has ditched the MyLink interface developed by previous parent General Motors (GM) and employed PSA software – which makes sense given the change in ownership. We can also see the PSA shift-by-wire lever that is fairly ubiquitous across the Citroen and Peugeot brands, though the steering wheel and dashboard designs stay largely true to Opels of old. According to the forum post, the Corsa has also grown about 40mm in length and 18mm in width, which should afford noticeably more space for passengers and cargo – the boot is said to measure around 309L now, which is up around 25L compared to the old model. In terms of available powertrains, we'd say the Corsa-e will feature the same 100kW electric motor hooked up to a 50kWh lithium-ion battery pack as the e-208. The Peugeot's 340km range claim should serve as a guide, too ... Australia Given Opel pulled out of the Australian market a couple of years ago, it's unlikely we'll see the Corsa in local showrooms anytime soon. Currently, the Opel Astra and Insignia are available Down Under badged as Holdens, though the recent acquisition of both Opel and Vauxhall by the PSA Group from General Motors means the Australian lion brand won't be getting any more Opel products in future given its GM ownership. Ours is either 12 or 13 cents depending on Summer or Winter for the overnight TOU rate. 73 - Jim Walls - K6CCC j...@k6ccc.org ___ UNSUBSCRIBE: http://www.evdl.org/help/index.html#usub http://lists.evdl.org/listinfo.cgi/ev-evdl.org Please discuss EV drag racing at NEDRA (http://groups.yahoo.com/group/NEDRA) ___ UNSUBSCRIBE: http://www.evdl.org/help/index.html#usub http://lists.evdl.org/listinfo.cgi/ev-evdl.org Please discuss EV drag racing at NEDRA (http://groups.yahoo.com/group/NEDRA)

It’s almost always cheaper to pollute. - Mark Sent from my Fuel Cell powered iPhone > On May 22, 2019, at 7:06 AM, Mark Hanson via EV wrote: > > Hi folks > It seems that it's cheaper for taking long road trips to buy a Prius Prime vs > a pricier Tesla or Bolt with a 60kwh battery pack and pay an average of 28c > per kWh average on the road at level 3 fast charging stations. Re: [EVDL] Road Trips: plugin vs EV cost per mile
I think you would also have to put in the cost of maintenance, smog testing, oil changes, insurance...etc. Then you would get the real cost. I suspect the cost with incentives the Tesla and Prime would be very close depending on model. A stripped Prius Prime would be mid 20k. Tesla High 20k. However those are just guesses. Maybe members could chime in with their msrp numbers. In day to day use the Tesla would far outstrip the Prius. I think the question is how many times would you go on long car trips. We have shorter range cheaper EVs (Spark bought 1 year old for $14k and Leaf $9.2k). At $3 a gallon/50 = 6c per mile and at 28c per kWh / 4 (ac meas)= 7c per mile in a long range EV (also have to pay $40k for the car with the 60kwh or so battery pack). Maybe it's better for the environment to drive a long range EV but for your wallet the Prius Prime and a shorter range EV for 90% miles local trips makes more sense.
