% pih is OT on the evdl.org , but interesting to some, the video shows
inline dual Electric-motors and dual planetary drive-elements (GM's efforts
to electrify their ice-tech). The CT6 design is similar to the Volt/Ampera
tech, but perhaps the caddy (boat)'s weight/pack-size has kept it from
achiving the 2017 Volt pih's ~50mi e-range %

A four-cylinder plug-in hybrid will be released in China in late 2016 and
North America in early 2017.[9] The car will called the CT6 PHEV, and will
use a similar drivetrain as the current Chevrolet Volt and Cadillac ELR.
This includes the 18.4 kWh Lithium ion Battery that offers an all electric
range of around 37 miles.

EVLN: 2017 i3 w/ Samsung 94Ah Cells> 125 Mile EPA Range Rating

[excerpt:
'According to some well connected insiders, it is beginning to look like BMW
will indeed use Samsung’s now 94 Ah battery cells in the 2017 i3 which will
begin production in July of 2016 ...

... the new battery pack would be the same physical size – 96 battery cells
packaged in 8 modules, containing 12 cells each. Using the new 94 Ah cells,
BMW would increase the i3’s total battery pack size from 21.6 kWh to 33.4
kWh without increasing weight significantly, if at all. Assuming BMW
continued allowing approximately 90% of the total pack as usable energy,
that would mean that the new i3 will have approximately 30kWh accessible to
use. 30kWh usable would increase the i3 BEV’s range to approximately 125
miles per charge ... '

Autonomous racing planned as support series to Formula E. Now that is ground
breaking! More soon. #FormulaE
2:28 AM - 27 Nov 2015
]

News emerged today that the all-electric motorsport series Formula E will
launch a driverless car racing concept as a support category.

The new concept is called Roborace; the first race is planned for the
2016-17 season. Ten teams will field two driverless cars each in races
lasting an hour each.

The revelations sprang first from a press conference this morning in London
with Formula E’s chief Alejandro Agag and technology investment business
Kinetik. The full press release is below.

Formula E and Kinetik today announced a partnership with the intention to
launch a global race series for driverless electric cars. This new
championship called ‘ROBORACE’ will provide a competitive platform for the
autonomous driving solutions that are now being developed by many large
industrial automotive and technology players as well as top tech
universities.

The plan is for ROBORACE to form part of the support package of the FIA
Formula E Championship, with the first race intended to take place during
the 2016-2017 season. ROBORACE is aimed to take place prior to each Formula
E race, using the same circuits in major cities across the world. Ten teams,
each with two driverless cars, will compete in one-hour races over the full
championship season. All the teams will have the same cars however will
compete using real-time computing algorithms and AI technologies.

Denis Sverdlov, founder of Kinetik and ROBORACE, said: “We passionately
believe that, in the future, all of the world’s vehicles will be assisted by
AI and powered by electricity, thus improving the environment and road
safety. ROBORACE is a celebration of revolutionary technology and innovation
that humanity has achieved in that area so far. It’s a global platform to
show that robotic technologies and AI can co-exist with us in real life.
Thus, anyone who is at the edge of this transformation now has a platform to
show the advantages of their driverless solutions and this shall push the
development of the technology.”

The mission of ROBORACE is to demonstrate that the future of automotive and
information technology is already here and can even work in extreme
conditions. ROBORACE believes that there is a lot of independent talents in
the world that might contribute to this initiative. That is why one of the
race teams will be organised as a crowd-sourced community team open for
enthusiastic software and technology experts all over the world.

Further support for both Formula E and ROBORACE shall come from Charge, an
automotive start-up founded by Kinetik that develops revolutionary
range-extended electric powertrains for commercial vehicles. Charge will
become Official Truck Partner of the FIA Formula E Championship and will
provide electric trucks for the drivers’ parade, towing trucks for emergency
recovery of the racing cars and shuttles for transportation of guests and
visitors of the championship around the eVillage.

Alejandro Agag, CEO of Formula E, said: “We are very excited to be
partnering with Kinetik on what is surely one of the most cutting-edge
sporting events in history. ROBORACE is an open challenge to the most
innovative scientific and technology-focused companies in the world. It is
very exciting to create a platform for them to showcase what they are
capable of and I believe there is great potential for us to unearth the next
big idea through the unique crowd-sourced contest.”

Re: [EVDL] EVLN: Higher power-density and efficiency pack increases i3range

2015-11-28 Thread Cor van de Water via EV
It is technically incorrect to say that a pack with the same 22 kWh capacity
can suddenly bring you about 50% further, because range of a specific car is
only dependent on usable pack capacity, but I can easily see the reporter being
confused and forgetting to note down one word, such as the new battery being
the same *size* as the current 22 kWh pack but higher density (and therefore
higher capacity, which leads to longer range). Apparently the usable capacity
becomes about 28 kWh.
The increase in power density that *was* mentioned only means that the
available capacity can be withdrawn in a shorter period, meaning that you can
go faster, not necessarily further. For that only capacity increase counts.

Tom Short with his electric Datsun which is set to compete during EVolocity
in Christchurch.

It's going to be a matter of catch him if you can when Taupo's Tom Short
heads to Christchurch this weekend .

Short, who owns the country's fastest electric car (it has a 14second time
for the quarter mile) which won the New Zealand Drag Racing Association
Street Car Championships in 2014, is set to race against electric cars built
by technology and engineering students during the annual EVolocity event.

The event will showcase electric vehicles and smart energy solutions at Mike
Pero Motorsport Park on Saturday.

The TSR Motors mechanic, who converted his yellow 1972 Datsun into an
electric drag car, said despite the "endless" supply of knowledge and
resources available to students he was confident with his chances of
winning.

"EVolocity put the challenge out to race against the university students to
see if they can take my title and they are paying me to go down so they must
be quite desperate to do it," he said.

"I am quite confident with my changes although it is going to be tough
because I don't know who I am racing against or what they are going to be
doing to their cars."

No doubt having six banks of batteries, which each have four times the amps
available in a standard house, will go a long way to maintaining that
confidence.

"At the moment it is so damned fast that it actually makes your stomach hurt
on acceleration," he said.

Short, who converted a Subaru WRX in 2011 as his first electric car, said
despite working on all types of cars he had a passion for electric.

"We built the WRX to try and save the planet and last year decided to use
everything we had and build an electric drag car," he said.

"As far as winning the championships against all the V8s, it was because it
was more consistent as they have gear changes and I don't, but it is still
very fast and this year we are setting out to prove how fast."

"I am just having fun with it and it is a good ride to be on."

Short said he would like to thank his local sponsors for supporting him
along the way.

When a car drifts, you typically hear the throttle bring feathers and a
massive exhaust note. For example, if you’re drifting Japan’s greatest
sounding car, you and everyone else around you is going to hear its engine
from miles away. But, what happens if the car you’re drifting doesn’t have a
standard gasoline engine, like the Tesla Model S?

There’s no doubt that Japan is the epicenter for drifting competitions and
that’s why it comes as no surprise that this video comes from there. MASUDA
Channel was recently in Tokyo at a drift competition when a Model S
showcased its drifting capabilities for the crowd. Sure, it couldn’t drift
as well as the famous drifting Lamborghini, but that wasn’t what was
important.

When you watch the video below, you’ll be watching an incredibly powerful
car drift with absolutely no engine noise. Is it strange? Sure. But, is it
bad? Of course not. These electric cars pack so much power that spinning
tires are their favorite past time. That is, if traction control gives way.

[EVDL] Selling Nissan Leaf battery module mounting plates (24 modules worth)

2015-11-28 Thread Jay Summet via EV
I have some leftover steel mounting plates that came out of a 2013
Nissan Leaf battery. There are 4 base plates and 4 top plates.

Each set of base/top plate will hold two "stacks" of Nissan leaf modules.

I have the long bolts that would allow you to make two plates of 4x
modules (2 stacks of 2) and 2 plates of 8x modules (2 stacks of 4) (12
long bolts and 12 short bolts). [But you could substitute your own bolts
to make taller stacks...)

(Their were originally 2 base plates that held 4 stacks of modules, but
I cut them in half to get 4 base plates that hold 2 stacks of modules each.)

So basically, this is a ready made mounting system for 24 modules (half
of the pack).

The weight is 32 lbs (of steel) so shipping will cost some money.

I have no idea what it's worth to people, so I listed the asking price
at $99, but I'm certainly willing to consider any offer.
