Re: [EVDL] EVLN: Smart fortwo EV Batteries' second-life @Work> a win-win

2016-02-10 Thread dovepa via EV
Lithium Ion batteries can loose capacity when just sitting. Not all of it is
permanent and can be recovered by cycling the cells.
I let mine sit for over a year and some cells only had 30% capacity left. I
cycled them about 5 times before I got full capacity back.
I am not sure what sitting for longer time periods would be but I have read
papers that indicate capacity loss can be permanent

Huh?  Who said that lithium ion batteries needed to be cycled (or
'cyclised') while in storage?   Aren't they OK when stored at around 40-70%
SOC?

The way I heard this deal a few years ago, the idea was that when the
battery capacity was too low for use in an EV, the battery would be demoted
to grid leveling service.

Unless this "reporter" is as clueless about this Diamler notion as he is
about how steam cars worked, in Diamler's world, it's the other way round.

I don't think that's a world I'm interested in joining, thank you.

It sounds like if I'm driving a Smart ED (love that designation) and I need
a new battery, I can't have one.  Diamler will sell me a USED battery, one
that's been doing grid leveling for some time already.  Are they going to
give me a price reduced by the proportion of already-used cycle life?

Something smells kind of foul here.

[EVDL] I need the secrets of the J1772. Avcon to J1772 DIY

2016-02-10 Thread Lawrence Rhodes via EV
Hi Cor,
I guess if you are soldering I can go that way.  However I do have a variety of
crimpers.  I could go to harbor freight on my way down to get the security
drivers.  I'm free today, tomorrow and Friday.  Working Saturday and Sunday
night. These Dostar have two wires internal  connected to a switch , 152 ohm
resistor.  Switch connected to the handle trigger. Connections:  PP CH are the
small ones.  L, N and FH are the big ones.  L might be load and N the other
load...or Neutral FH must be ground.  It's in the middle.  I've only done one
conversion.  It was easy.  A simple line for line connection.  I simply bought
a cord with the J1772 plug on it.  Lawrence

Hi Lawrence,
Do you come to Silicon Valley often?
I have done at least 5 conversions AVCON => pistol and I have always soldered
the pins.
Make sure you have a soldering iron that can deliver enough heat to work fast
enough that the solder does not wick up into the wire too far.
Also, I pre-tin the wire separately, then I heat up the pin and fill the pin's
cavity about 2/3 full of molten solder, then I insert the pre-tinned wire so
all solder flows together and then I let it cool, this avoids prolonged heating
of the wire and the wicking problem.
The J1772 standard drawing has it all layed out, the switch is supposed to
already have a resistor attached and I also liked to reference the conversion
pictorial that is shown on I believe Rush's site of a conversion.
Then the proof of the pudding is in the eating - measure the voltages on the
plug of your car and on the pistol before plugging in the first time.
Everything is referenced to ground.
In fact, I need to do one more conversion of the DS-100 that I have that I have
no pistol for, I only have a cord with attached plug but I will keep that for
other projects. So, I would need one more plug.
Do you fancy a mini Maker Fair in my garage?

That is a very good deal.  Did you get the O down O% financing?  Does it have
the 6.6kw charger?  Chademo?  If you want the battery to last don't too deeply
discharge it.  That is get home with 1 mile on the range or accelerate fast.
Don't drive 65 on the freeway too much.  I try to keep the energy consumption
to 5miles per kw.  That increases range.  Learn about the displays.  Battery
percentage.  Energy use.  Etc...It is controlled by the top left of four
buttons above the charge port button.  Coast down hill when you can especially
if it increases speed.  Not exceeding 2 blue dots gives the best speed and fuel
consumption.  3 dots or 4 to accelerate on to the freeway.  My freeway speeds
vary from 45 to 65 mph depending on the terrain.  Lawrence Rhodes.

This could not be further from the real truth.  You can't get a very good deal
on a new Leaf Lease.  You can however get a  5 thousand dollar discount on used
Leafs or off lease cars..  I bought a 2013 vehicle near pristine for 14k.  18 k
would be the price I'd have to pay for my 2012. Minus 5k that is still 13
thousand for a year older with 39k and a degraded battery pack and a 3.3kw
charger vs. the 2013 with a 6.6 charger. The 2013 has a better battery pack
since it only has 2600 miles on it...yes 2600.  No typo.  I could have gotten a
22k mile vehicle(2013) for 10k.  So adjustments have been made.  You will
simply pay more for a 2016 with extended range. Much less for a used Leaf.
Plus Nissan is committed to a replacement pack for 5500 dollars.  A used Leaf
2013 or newer is the best deal.  Stay away from 2012 and 2011 models.  Seems
the battery packs are not as good as 2013 on.  Lawrence Rhodes

Re: [EVDL] EVLN: Venturi, OSU VBB-3 Electric Racer targets 372mph record 0-60mph:2s

2016-02-10 Thread Bill Dube via EV
The reason that Tesla is limited to a 0 to 60 mph of 3.2 seconds is that
you can only get about 1 g of acceleration on the street. The
coefficient of friction (on regular pavement) is a little less than one.
I'm guessing that the 2 second 0 to 60 mph time is calculated using a
simplistic formula based on 3000 HP and 8000 lbs, and not actually
measured.

Zero to 60 mph in 2 seconds would be 1.36 g's, which would mean
that the coefficient of friction (traction) would have to be 1.36 or
greater. You only get that much traction on the drag strip or on
specially prepped pavement.

I don't know about where you live, but around here, there are many places in
cities and towns where the mobile signals are irregular enough to make IP
service hit-and-miss. AM and FM reception are still more reliable.

I suppose streaming could be done tolerably well, if the player had a huge
buffer. You'd probably still lose it going through tunnels, unless the
tunnels had mobile repeaters.

Don't forget the substantial bandwidth cost (in $$$). The fact that mobile
access is rolled into the purchase price of your EV so the manufacturer can
keep tabs on you (EV ankle bracelet to complement your smartphone ankle
bracelet) doesn't mean that you're not paying for it.

All that said, I have to wonder about BMW. I don't see any excuse for
skimping on shielding. The FCC will probably have something to say about
that. In fact I wonder if they might be risking interference with emergency
vehicle radios. Not smart.

As part of an upcoming episode from the third season of the hit TV show
Timber Kings, HGTV Canada recently set a new world record for the Fastest
motorised log, creating a super-fast vehicle built from a single section of
Western Red Cedar.

The show usually sees logging experts build incredible cabins for million
dollar clients, but for a forthcoming episode the team turned their
attention to something altogether more fast paced.

The car was created from a single log from British Columbia, Canada, with
the build taking over 3,000 man hours.

Once construction was completed, an attempt at the record took place at the
Wild Horse Pass Motorsports Park in Chandler, Arizona, USA, on 20 January
2016.

The final speed on the first ever run of the motorized log, was 76.625 kph
(47.64 mph) - smashing the required benchmark of 50 kph to set a new
Guinness World Records title - an impressive feat when taking into account
the 2,000 pound weight of the car.

The vehicle, dubbed “The Cedar Rocket” by its creators, was built with
volunteer time and consists of metal frames and axels, an electric motor,
and two turbines.

The car was driven during its record-breaking run by star of the Timber
Kings show Bryan Reid Sr, the founder and owner of Pioneer Log Homes of BC,
who following the attempt declared that breaking the record was "one of the
top ten achievements" of his life.

The motorized log will be auctioned later in 2016 with all proceeds going to
veterans charities.

[EVDL] EVLN: Why Electric Cars Are Ditching AM Radio

Electric cars may be energy efficient Earth-saving futuremobiles, but their
rise could also have a strange unintended consequence: killing off the
oldest form of radio.

Two popular electric cars, the BMW i3 and Tesla Model X, are ditching
terrestrial AM radio because electromagnetic noise from the electric motor
interferes with the broadcast reception, causing static, as the blog Music
3.0 recently pointed out.

Electronics have always been a source of AM radio static, and electric
motors are no exception. EVs are powered by a rechargeable battery, electric
motor, and a frequency converter that controls how much power the car's
electrical motors put out by turning voltage on and off thousands of times a
second, basically chopping up energy. This process causes electromagnetic
interference that gets picked up by the radio.

AM radio has always been more susceptible to static than its partner on the
dial. "AM" stands for amplitude modulation, which means the height of the
radio waves are varied over time to encode the information, versus “FM,”
frequency modulation, which varies their speed. Since amplitude, not
frequency, is affected by electrical noise emitted by gadgets like
smartphones, TVs, computers, even vacuum cleaners and hairdryers, AM signals
are prone to distortion and crackling.

That crackle apparently just doesn’t fly with luxury auto brands. BMW
spokesperson Rebecca Kiehne told me, "Electric motors cause interference on
AM which is why BMW decided to remove this option. While it could be
offered, BMW's performance standards are very high and we don't offer a
product that meets less than those high standards."

But while BMW disabled AM radio in the i3 because the company was worried
customers would complain about the poor sound quality, some customers have
instead taken to complaining about the lack of AM radio. Consumers took to
forums to bemoan the omission, a few even saying they wouldn’t buy an i3
without it. One BMW owner commented, “I plan to drag out my portable AM
radio and leave it in the car.” Some owners are hacking the car to get AM
radio back.

Meanwhile, the new Tesla Model X also dropped terrestrial AM radio from its
infotainment dashboard—a change from the Model S. Instead, you can get most
AM stations via internet radio if you go menu diving through TuneIn, a
service that aggregates internet radio and traditional AM/FM stations and is
the standard radio option in Tesla cars.

“AM radio stations are accessible through our internet radio service in
Model X. Because AM audio quality can be very poor, we offer internet radio
to give our customers considerably better sound quality and reception
coverage,” a Tesla spokesperson told me over email. Apparently, finding the
stations isn’t always easy though; there’s a Tesla forum devoted to figuring
out how to locate AM stations on the Model X.

At this point you may be asking, who cares? Isn’t AM radio a dinosaur
technology with one leg in the grave? Does anyone even listen to it? The
answer is yes: about 3 million people listen to it every day, and five of
the ten most popular radio stations in the US are AM radio. “This narrative
that somehow AM radio is dying is silly,” Dennis Wharton, communications
executive at the National Association of Broadcasters, told me.

Despite the higher sound quality of the FM band and the ascent of satellite
and internet radio, the medium of FDR’s fireside chats and Rush Limbaugh is
still cemented in American culture. AM signals can travel further distances,
making it popular for talk radio and local programs like weather and traffic
reports or emergency response information. It’s also more affordable to get
on, so is home to lots of niche stations like foreign language radio,
college radio, or religious programs. “It’s a haven for minority radio
stations as well—particularly Latino and Hispanic radio has moved a lot to
AM radio in recent years,” said Wharton. Not to mention some major sports
franchises still broadcast games, sometimes exclusively, on legacy AM
stations that have been around forever and have fiercely loyal listeners.

The National Association of Broadcasters (NAB) is asking BMW to reconsider
its decision to drop AM radio, and NAB’s California branch has teamed up
with engineers to devise a solutions to the static problem. A group of
engineers in Germany are also working on a prototype for minimizing
interference by shielding the engine’s cabling and insulating the motor, at
a price point that’s affordable for automakers.

Cars and radio have always been inextricably linked: about 90

The Principal Motor Designer at Tesla Motors, the electric luxury cars
maker, is Greek. Meet Konstantinos Laskaris.

Since 2012, Laskaris is lead designer at Tesla Motors in Silicon Valley,
California. There, he implements new technologies for the electric cars of
the future.

It comes as no surprise that Tesla, the EV trailblazer, spends a
considerable amount of resources on internal R to develop better parts for
EVs, and that its testing facilities and engineering talent are at the
forefront of the industry.

“As Tesla’s Principal Motor Designer, Konstantinos Laskaris is responsible
for the electromechanical design and optimization of the company’s existing
and future traction motors,” wrote Charged EVs, a magazine specializing in
electric vehicles, calling Laskaris “Tesla’s motor guru.”

Laskaris received his diploma from the National Technical University of
Athens in the School of Electrical and Computer Engineering. He continued
his studies at the Imperial College in London, where he got his diploma and
master’s degree in 2002 and 2004 respectively. He worked in Greece as an
electrical engineer and returned, three years later, to NTUA to follow his
true passion, get a PhD in electrical engineering systems of high
performance.

His research interests include customizing and modelling of permanent magnet
synchronous motors, induction motors and synchronous reluctance motors using
the finite element method, as well as developing methods of multicriteria
optimization using supercomputers.

From 2008 to 2011 he was Head and Co-founder of “Prometheus” team in NTUA, a
team that consists mainly of undergraduate students, and takes part in fuel
economy contests with the prototype electric vehicle “Pyrforos.” The
“Prometheus” team broke Greece’s record eight times and took the 7th place
in Europe with “Pyrforos” traveling with 360km/kWh.

Konstantinos Laskaris has also worked in education, as a laboratory partner
in NTUA and Technical Education Institute of Piraeus, teaching the science
of electric engines to undergraduate students.

Electric moped hire scheme to follow in the wake of successful bicycle and
electric car hire programmes

Having already pioneered on-the-go cycle and electric car hire schemes,
Paris is poised to introduce a similar hire scheme for electric mopeds.

According to reports, the mayor's office this week confirmed that 1,000
electric scooters will be deployed across the city from this summer, as part
of Mayor Anne Hildago's latest efforts to cut air pollution and congestion
in the French capital.

The scheme will be managed by electric vehicle hire specialist Cityscoot
following a successful trial of 50 scooters. "In the last three months 1,200
testers have completed nearly 4,500 journeys," the mayor's office was quoted
as saying by news agency AFP, adding that the result of the trial had been
"very positive".

Anyone aged over 20 with a relevant licence will be able to hire an electric
moped, in a move aimed at cutting down on noise and pollution

Electric mopeds will be available for hire around Paris from this summer
following an “encouraging” trial of the public scheme, the mayor’s office
has announced.

The service will see 1,000 scooters gradually deployed around the French
capital, available to anyone aged over 20 with a moped licence.

The electric bikes, equivalent to mopeds with 50cc engines, will be
available from 7am until 1am daily under a scheme managed by Cityscoot, the
first company in Europe to provide self-service scooters.

Cityscoot has been testing 50 of the scooters since last June with the
support of city authorities and the results had been “very positive”, the
mayor’s office said.

“In the last three months 1,200 testers have completed nearly 4,500
journeys,” the office said, adding that 65% of those who took part said they
would use the scheme regularly.

In a city where motorbikes and mopeds make up a sizeable chunk of daily
traffic, 21% said they would be happy to switch exclusively to the more
environmentally friendly electric bikes.

The Local reported that Cityscoot will have no rental terminals, no key, and
no magnetic card, unlike existing car sharing networks.

For €3 ($3.25) each 15 minutes, users will be able to rent a scooter using
an app on their smartphone.

The scooters can cover about 105km, or five hours of driving, before they
need a recharge. Helmets and gloves will also be available for hire.

The scheme is endorsed by Anne Hidalgo, the capital’s mayor, who wants to
reduce cars and pollution in Paris.

I guess if you are soldering I can go that way. However I do have a
variety of crimpers. I could go to harbor freight on my way down to get
the security drivers. I'm free today, tomorrow and Friday. Working
Saturday and Sunday night. These Dostar have two wires internal
connected to a switch , 152 ohm resistor. Switch connected to the
handle trigger. Connections: PP CH are the small ones. L, N and FH are
the big ones. L might be load and N the other load...or Neutral FH must
be ground. It's in the middle. I've only done one conversion. It was
easy. A simple line for line connection. I simply bought a cord with
the J1772 plug on it. Lawrence

Hi Lawrence,
Do you come to Silicon Valley often?
I have done at least 5 conversions AVCON => pistol and I have always
soldered the pins.
Make sure you have a soldering iron that can deliver enough heat to work
fast enough that the solder does not wick up into the wire too far.
Also, I pre-tin the wire separately, then I heat up the pin and fill the
pin's cavity about 2/3 full of molten solder, then I insert the
pre-tinned wire so all solder flows together and then I let it cool,
this avoids prolonged heating of the wire and the wicking problem.
The J1772 standard drawing has it all layed out, the switch is supposed
to already have a resistor attached and I also liked to reference the
conversion pictorial that is shown on I believe Rush's site of a
conversion.
Then the proof of the pudding is in the eating - measure the voltages on
the plug of your car and on the pistol before plugging in the first
time. Everything is referenced to ground.
In fact, I need to do one more conversion of the DS-100 that I have that
I have no pistol for, I only have a cord with attached plug but I will
keep that for other projects. So, I would need one more plug.
