Building hybrids has reportedly taught it plenty about EVs

Earlier this month, Automotive News published an article that accused Toyota
and other Japanese automakers of having fallen behind in electric vehicle
development. Among other examples, the article pointed out that Toyota only
started its dedicated EV division less than a year ago. But if you ask
Toyota, it’s not behind at all.

Speaking with Autocar, Kiyotaka Ise, Toyota’s head of research and
development, said the company’s focus on hybrids and hydrogen-powered
vehicles hasn’t held it back on the EV front. “We have been working with
electric motors, inverters, and batteries for more than 20 years,” he said.
“We have nothing to worry about. Our EV technology is already developed. The
core technology is the same.”

Ise also dismissed concerns that Toyota hadn’t invested enough in battery
research saying, “There are basically four battery suppliers in the world
and we can buy from any of them.” However, he did admit that bringing
solid-state batteries to market as soon as possible would give Toyota an
edge over its competitors. But these types of high-energy-density batteries
are one area where he says Toyota is investing heavily.

“I will not spoil the story by revealing our range goals or cost
expectations, but we are working hard on solid-state batteries,” Ise said.
“The plan is to have them on sale in the early 2020s. And that is an
objective that we think puts us ahead of the opposition.”

Perhaps we’ll hear more about Toyota’s electric plans at the Tokyo Motor
Show later this week.

KTM Freeride E-XC
]

The latest incarnation of the KTM Freeride E-XC is a big step in the right
direction for electric motorcycles.

This latest version is powered by a state-of-the-art electric motor, with a
peak of 18 KW. (In old money is about 22bhp). This new motor is housed in an
all-new composite frame, which aids handling. The rumoured weight is
supposed to be around the 111kg mark.

So a powerful electric motor and a light agile frame, what’s not to like?

Furthermore KTM has introduced its new power pack. This new battery
increases range by 50% over the previous version. Range is now up to one and
a half hours on a single charge.

The new KTM Freeride E-XC comes with energy regeneration. The moment the
throttle is released or the brakes are applied, this energy will be fed back
into the battery to extend the range further. KTM also report that the
Freeride E-XC has a quick charging time, although the duration is yet to be
stated. To charge the PowerPack costs around 70 pence depending on provider.

This new bike from KTM also comes with new WP Xplor upside down forks and
shock absorbers, with the upgraded suspension system further enhancing the
handling capabilities due to improved progression and adjustment options.

The new Freeride E-XC has been designed for ease of use. The clutch lever
and gear shifter are gone. Replaced with a simple twist and go operation,
much the same as a scooter. A relatively low seat height of 900mm will only
boost your confidence further. It has three riding modes: Economy, Enduro
and Cross. Minimalist bodywork yet stylish new trim and racy colours give
this bike a fresh look. This coupled with A1 licence compliance in Europe,
makes for a huge target market. Whether you are an experienced rider or a
new rider. The Freeride E-XC motorcycle applies to all.

This latest electric motorcycle showcases KTM’s commitment to the future
possibilities within the market. The Austrian outfit could potentially
manufacture electric mini bikes and an electric scooter.

Stefan Pierer (KTM CEO) said: “We are proud to present the new KTM FREERIDE
E-XC, which marks the next step in development of e-mobility within KTM and
is a continuation of our commitment to this segment. We know that e-mobility
will change the landscape of travel in the future, and our vision is very
clear. Looking ahead to 2025 we expect to have a wider range of models
available with a focus in the commuting arena. We also plan crossover
machines with our collaboration with PEXCO, as well as using our e-mobility
expertise in other applications.”

The demand for electric motorcycles is slowly starting to increase. With
more and more manufacturers getting involved with this revolution the
possibilities are endless. However, with new models from KTM becoming
available only by 2025. Is this soon enough? The motorcycling world needs
electric versions of every category of bike. Whether it is a scooter, sports
bike, tourer, cruiser, you name it. All of these will need viable electric
options. The sooner electric bikes appeal to all, the sooner they will
become a resounding success.

[EVDL] Future Nissan EVs 'sing' (canto)> (@marketplace requirement speeds 20+kph/12.5+mph)

Nissan wants its electric cars to ‘sing’ so that you’ll hear them coming
Oct 25, 2017 Sean O'Kane

[image
https://youtu.be/p4cjPk8mqEM
Nissan sings with debut of ‘Canto’ at 2017 Tokyo Motor Show
]

The IMx concept plays music at low speeds

Nissan unveiled a new electric concept car at the Tokyo Motor Show today
called the IMx, and it’s relatively standard fare as far as these types of
futuristic car announcements go. It’s a crossover SUV with a sparse interior
that lets giant OLED displays splash and clash with wood grain details. It
promises a dreamy 600 kilometer (372 miles) of range without shorting the
theoretical driver on power — it’s got the equivalent of over 400
horsepower. And, of course, this literal vehicle is also a metaphorical
vehicle for Nissan’s self-driving technology, ProPilot.

The standout feature, then, has more to do with the people around this car
than it does with the driver. While the lack of engine noise might be a
turnoff for car buffs with a thing for combustion engines, it’s a genuine
concern for pedestrian safety. And so instead of being ultra-quiet like most
other electric vehicles, this car — and other EVs in Nissan’s future, the
company says — “sings” to let people know that it’s coming. Nissan’s calling
this suite of sweeping sounds “Canto,” as in Spanish for “I Sing.”

"Electric cars might be too quiet to be safe for pedestrians, so companies
and governments are trying to fix that now"

Nissan didn’t elaborate on exactly how Canto will work, just that the sound
will be activated “at speeds of up to 20 to 30 kph,” or about 12.5 to 18.5
miles per hour, “depending on marketplace requirements.” Those requirements
are currently pretty loose; the US National Highway Traffic Safety
Administration, for example, will require cars made in and after 2019 to
emit a sound at under 19 miles per hour, but doesn’t prescribe what the
sound should be.

Some manufacturers, like Porsche, had already committed to bestowing their
EVs with some sort of artificial noise before NHTSA announced its
requirements. Other companies that are working on more specifically
self-driving electric technology have explored visual communication
techniques, too.

What little you can hear in the promo video that Nissan released for Canto,
which you can watch above, isn’t enough to get a full impression of what it
will be like to hear on the street or behind the wheel. There are a few more
clips of how it might sound in this video, though.

To me, it sort of resembles what would happen if you took the sound of a
traditional car accelerating and ran it through Vocaloid. It’s also
reminiscent of the Lucasfilm THX Sound promo that plays before movies. It’s
also not all that different from some famous computer startup sounds.

Is that a good thing? Will Canto change by the time Nissan actually builds a
car that uses it? And which carmaker will be the first to license the
Jetsons noise for its cars? The future holds many secrets.

[EVDL] EVs for India: Maruti Suzuki to Build Electric Cars ...

2017-10-30 Thread brucedp5 via EV

% Some uninformed readers (outside India) might incorrectly assume when they

company.jp that produces the Suzuki vehicles on their roads in the Americas
or in Europe.

You can read about the marutisuzuki.com India partnership on:

Maruti-Suzuki is only one of many vehicle companies.in trying to help India
overcome their huge ice pollution problems (which are similar to China's,

After all, the pollution that blows in from Europe & the middle East, adds

[EVDL] Maruti Suzuki to Build Electric Cars as Government Strives to Electrify All New Vehicles

Maruti also manufactures hybrid cars, demand for which has taken a beating
after the government raised sales taxes on them to as much as 43 percent.

Maruti Suzuki India, the country's biggest carmaker, said on Friday it
planned to build electric cars as the government strives to electrify all
new vehicles by 2030, though it didn't give a timeline for the process.

Maruti Suzuki's chairman said there was still no clear roadmap on how the
government aimed to achieve its target and a lot would depend on that.

"We will make electric cars but I can't give you the date just now because
it is all very much a work in progress," R.C. Bhargava told reporters, after
the company posted a 3 percent rise in quarterly profit, beating analysts'
estimates.

India is working on a new auto policy that promotes the use of electric
cars, and a draft is likely to be made public before the end of the year.
This is a shift from an earlier policy that promoted hybrid and electric
vehicles.

Sales of electric cars in India remain negligible, however, mainly due to
the high cost of batteries which make the vehicles expensive and out of
reach for many buyers in a country where cars are as cheap as 250,000 rupees
($3,800). A lack of charging stations also makes the whole proposition
unviable for now.

Maruti's parent, Suzuki Motor Corp, has electric car technology which it can
provide, Bhargava said, adding the Japanese company was also in talks with
Toyota Motor Corp to form an alliance which may include sharing technologies
like hybrid and electric.

Maruti dominates the small car market in India and has been launching more
premium vehicles as competition heats up with newer and planned entrants
such as Kia Motors and SAIC Motor Corp.

Maruti also manufactures hybrid cars, demand for which has taken a beating
after the government raised sales taxes on them to as much as 43 percent.
Bhargava said the future of hybrid cars in India
   would depend on
the level of taxes and the company was in talks with the government to lower
them.

GROWTH SLOWING

Bhargava said that while the company continued to expect double digit sales
growth over the remainder of fiscal 2018, it would slow from the 18 percent
posted in the second quarter.

Earlier on Friday, Maruti reported a profit of 24.84 billion rupees ($381.86
million) for the second quarter ended Sept. 30, versus 24.02 billion rupees
a year ago, helped by higher sales of compact and utility vehicles.

Analysts, on average, had expected a profit of 22.29 billion rupees,
according to Thomson Reuters data.

Maruti, which provides the bulk of Suzuki Motor's revenues, sold a total of
492,118 vehicles during the quarter, up about 18 percent from a year ago.

Sales of compact vehicles, which include the Swift and Baleno, rose 43.5
percent, while sales of utility vehicles like the Ertiga and Vitara Brezza
climbed 27.6 percent.

Maruti shares closed slightly higher at 8,114.45 rupees.
