iEV X prototype in action
]

We've already seen single-seat electric cars, the tiny size of which makes
them ideal for maneuvering through congested urban environments. However,
what happens when you want to carry a second passenger? In the case of the
iEV X, the car just gets longer.

Currently in functioning prototype form, the German-made iEV (Intelligent
Electric Vehicle) X is just 78 cm wide (30.7 inches), and 160 cm long (63
inches) in single-passenger mode. When users want to bring someone else
along, the car can be electrically lengthened to 190 cm (74.8 inches),
allowing a folded second seat to pop up behind the driver's. If they want to
take on some extra cargo, the car can be further lengthened to 220 cm (86.6
inches).

The sides of the vehicle remain open when it's extended.
The iEV X is currently the subject of a Kickstarter campaign [

]

Plans call for the 115-kg (254-lb) base model to be powered by a 48-volt
lithium-ion battery pack, which should be good for a range of up to 60 km
(37 miles) per 3-hour plug-in charge. A 40-watt rooftop solar panel will
help charge the battery while the car is parked. The top speed is 45 km/h
(28 mph).

The fancier 145-kg (320-lb) iEV X+ model should feature a higher-capacity
72-volt battery, a range of up to 120 km (75 miles), a 60-watt solar panel,
and a top speed of 60 km/h (37 mph). Plans also call for an optional
automatic robotic charging system, and even a pedal system to help boost
battery range.
Depending on the model, the iEV X will have a top speed of either 45 or...

Additional features of both models should include power-retractible side
mirrors, a wide-angle rearview camera, a 7-inch touchscreen display, a full
LED lighting system, and a steel chassis with aluminum body panels.

Should you be interested in getting an iEV X, it's currently the subject of
a Kickstarter campaign. If it reaches production, an early bird pledge of
€1,850 (about US$2,144) will get you the base model, with €7,850 ($9,098)
required for the iEV X+.

The Sion has solar cells integrated into its bodywork

BERLIN — A Munich-based start-up has taken advantage of the strong Bavarian
sun this summer to test the final development of the charging system of its
Sion car, an all-electric solar vehicle that lets you charge as you drive.

Germany will likely miss its target of putting 1 million electric cars on
the road by 2020 but the government said in April it was ready to offer
support to companies that make batteries for electric vehicles.

Sono Motors [
https://sonomotors.com/
], founded in 2016, is developing the Sion, a fully-electric vehicle that
has solar cells integrated into its bodywork. It can be charged via solar
power, from conventional power outlets or other electric cars.

The Sion also features moss integrated into the dashboard for air filtration
and humidity regulation. Sono says the moss needs no water or other special
care to maintain.

Production will start in the second half of 2019 at one of its German plants
and the company has around 5,000 orders which it aims to start selling at
16,000 euros ($18,540) next year.

Sion will have 330 solar cells attached to the vehicle's roof, bonnet and
sides and its battery system will offer a range of around 250 km (155 miles)
before it needs recharging.

"We have a seat heater, there is air conditioning, there is a large
infotainment system where I can also connect my phone interactively, which
means I really have a full vehicle which is very simple, has no frills,"
Laurin Hahn, co-founder and chief executive of the startup told Reuters.

[EVDL] BigOil country's big stake in Tesla privatisation

Elon Musk Says He Has Funding From Saudi Arabia to Take Tesla Private
2018-08-13 Patrick George

What we know about Elon Musk’s alleged take-Tesla-private plans a week
later, how Lincoln wants to go more premium, Harley-Davidson’s troubles and
more on The Morning Shift for Monday, August 13, 2018.

1st Gear: Why Saudi Arabia Could Be a Player in Tesla

A week ago, Elon Musk shocked the business world—as he does—with a Tweet—as
he also does—claiming he has funding “secured” to take now-publicly traded
Tesla private. Since then details of this alleged plan have been scarce, and
it’s even led to an inquiry by the SEC and a shareholder lawsuit. It’s been
a busy week!

Until this morning we didn’t really know who Musk had lined up for the
funding of such a venture, though many speculated it would be Saudi Arabia’s
sovereign wealth fund, which recently bought a 5 percent stake in Tesla. Now
we know: it is the Saudis, per a new blog post from Musk himself, who says
the “funding secured” comments came from meetings he had with them this
summer.

From Musk:

Going back almost two years, the Saudi Arabian sovereign wealth fund has
approached me multiple times about taking Tesla private. They first met with
me at the beginning of 2017 to express this interest because of the
important need to diversify away from oil. They then held several additional
meetings with me over the next year to reiterate this interest and to try to
move forward with a going private transaction. Obviously, the Saudi
sovereign fund has more than enough capital needed to execute on such a
transaction.

Recently, after the Saudi fund bought almost 5% of Tesla stock through
the public markets, they reached out to ask for another meeting. That
meeting took place on July 31st. During the meeting, the Managing Director
of the fund expressed regret that I had not moved forward previously on a
going private transaction with them, and he strongly expressed his support
for funding a going private transaction for Tesla at this time. I understood
from him that no other decision makers were needed and that they were eager
to proceed.

I left the July 31st meeting with no question that a deal with the Saudi
sovereign fund could be closed, and that it was just a matter of getting the
process moving. This is why I referred to “funding secured” in the August
7th announcement.

Following the August 7th announcement, I have continued to communicate
with the Managing Director of the Saudi fund. He has expressed support for
proceeding subject to financial and other due diligence and their internal
review process for obtaining approvals. He has also asked for additional
details on how the company would be taken private, including any required
percentages and any regulatory requirements.

Why Saudi Arabia? Apparently it’s the Kingdom’s goal to move to more than
just a petroleum-based economy, and electric cars—probably more accurately,
Tesla’s planned large-scale battery production—could help there.

(Fun fact: Whenever we’re critical of Tesla we’re either accused of being
“shorts”, or pawns for Big Oil, which sees a sometimes-struggling electric
car company with less than 2 percent of U.S. market share as an existential
threat. Now here’s a Big Oil country potentially taking a big stake in
Tesla.)

Anyway, Musk says in the post that he is “having discussions with a number
of other investors.” Wired reports that besides Saudi Arabia, the big
investors could be from Japan and China. But an investment plan by Japan’s
SoftBank last year didn’t work thanks to the latter’s concerns over who
would control the company. China’s a strong contender here too, given that
government’s strict EV requirements coming soon:

But China is the most likely source for the money, according to Michael
Dunne, CEO of ZoZo Go, an investment advisory company for the automotive
industry. He says the massive luxury car market there, a
government-determined to transition to EVs, and customers who’ll pay a
premium for an exclusive brand, all make China the most important market for
electric cars, and one that’s only going to grow. The government is
mandating 10 percent of all sales next year are battery powered.

That means Chinese investors are desperately looking to buy their way
in. China’s internet giant, Tencent, already holds about 5 percent of Tesla
stock. “If you look at China’s EV sector, and how much money has poured into
startups born in the last few years, from Byton to Neo, it’s billions of
dollars easily,” says Dunne. And that’s for companies that haven’t built a
car, and have no track record. Tesla might be a new player in the automotive
world, but it’s a surer bet compared to some of its competitors.

With any luck, we’ll find out more this

Actually, I think it DOES matter. If the manufacturer can't be bothered
with reporting the capacity correctly, he probably can't be bothered with
quality control either.

It reminds me of the countless LED area lights offered on Ebay and Amazon,
most of them shipped directly from China. Almost every one lists completely
bogus specs for lumen output and power input. The numbers they advertise
are based on the sum of the chips' datasheet absolute maximums. But the
chips could never sustain that level for more than a few seconds with real
world cooling. The finished lights are doing well if they make half their
ratings. Some are closer to one-third.

If you look for them, there are decent and reputable manufacturers in China.
I have 3 Ping 10ah LiFePO4 batteries that continue to serve me well. Two
are almost 7 years old, and still have 90-95% of their specified capacity.
But let me tell you, they weren't cheap. And 2 of the 3 chargers supplied
with them have failed.
