]

New York’s restrictions on electric bikes have loosened. E-bike sharing is
poised to expand. Here’s what to expect before you head out for a ride.

On any given day, as many as 50,000 bicycle delivery workers sweep through
the streets of New York, and according to their advocates, more than half of
them are on e-bikes. The electric-assist bicycle (or e-bike) has become a
vital tool in this arduous job, where a worker’s shift can last up to 10
hours, six days a week. Until very recently, however, e-bikes were actually
illegal to operate in the city, often leading to stiff fines and penalties
for the delivery people.

Lately, however, it seems as if the city is starting to embrace them. Not
only did New York recently amend its rules for e-bikes, it has also begun
rolling out major new e-bike-sharing programs geared toward commuters and
tourists.
What is an e-bike?

It’s a bicycle with an integrated electric motor, allowing the rider greater
speed with less effort. Versions of battery-operated bikes date back to the
late 1800s, though they didn’t become popular until the last decade or so.
Today, they’re far more common in Europe and China than in the U.S. In this
country, delivery workers have so far made up the majority of users.

Are e-bikes legal now?

Not all of them. The new law applies only to “pedal assist” bikes, which
give riders a boost but are meant to run no faster than 20 m.p.h. Still
banned are “throttle” bikes, which can whiz along without any assistance
from the cyclist, achieving speeds of roughly 28 m.p.h. Most of the cyclists
making deliveries favor the throttle bikes.

Why were e-bikes illegal in the first place?

It’s complicated. The illegality has related to a broader New York State law
[
https://dmv.ny.gov/registration/motorized-devices-cannot-be-registered-new-york
] that required riders to register electric bikes in the same way they do
cars, motorcycles, or mopeds. But in a true Catch-22 situation, the state
(and thus the city) prohibited registering certain vehicles, like golf
carts, go-karts — and e-bikes. Strangely, it has always been legal to sell
e-bikes in New York but not to ride them. The new law amends that.

What is the fine for riding a throttle e-bike?

When Yidi Zhu, a Chinatown-based food delivery man, was stopped for riding a
throttle bike, he was issued a $500 ticket and had his bike seized. “I had
to go to court to get the bike back, so I lost four or five days of work,”
Mr. Zhu said through an interpreter.

He estimated that he lost $1,500, the same cost as many new bikes, or
roughly three-quarters of a month’s salary for many in the trade, according
to Helen Ho of Biking Public Project, an advocacy organization for the
workers.

Is there a chance that throttle bikes will be made legal?

Maybe. The mayor has backed only the pedal-assist bikes, but at an August
news conference held to introduce a new electric Citi Bike line, Brooklyn’s
borough president, Eric Adams, mentioned that he didn’t think the worker’s
devices should be illegal.

“The motorized bikes the delivery personnel use is something that we should
find a way to incorporate into the system,” he said.

Who is behind the new e-bike-sharing programs?

In August, Motivate, which runs Citi Bike, began testing a pilot program by
installing 200 e-bikes into its collection of 12,000 bikes. Next year, in
advance of the L train shutdown, the company will install docking stations
on each side of the Williamsburg Bridge to accommodate 1,000 e-bikes.

Private companies like Jump [
https://jump.com/
] and Lime [
https://www.li.me/
], which also offer electric scooters in some cities, have introduced
pedal-assist bike-share systems to Staten Island and the Bronx. There seems
to be money behind these programs. This year, Lyft bought Motivate, and Uber
brought Jump.

Jump e-bikes, a dockless rental program owned by Uber, have started showing
up around New York.CreditGregg Vigliotti for The New York Times

How does e-bike sharing work?

With Citi’s new e-system, you follow the same procedure as with their common
bikes. The cost is the same. Jump and Lime e-bikes require an app to
register. But Jump and Lime e-bikes are dockless; you can lock them

Upset at oil-rich Saudi Arabia? Start driving an electric vehicle
Oct 17, 2018

To the editor: Righteous indignation over the likely death of Saudi
journalist Jamal Khashoggi is being expressed by countless Americans. Most
of us feel impotent, however, to do anything about it.

The Saudi ruling family is a wealthy bunch and uses its money to intimidate
or buy off anyone who would try to interfere in its machinations. But there
is a chink in the royals’ armor: Their wealth comes exclusively from oil, so
anything that reduces demand for oil scares them.

This is where you come in. If you drive an internal combustion car, switch
to an electric vehicle. You’ll not only eliminate the pollution you were
generating, you will also forever stop giving money to the oil industry.

As more of us take this step, we will eventually eliminate oil as the energy
source for all ground transport. Saudi Arabia will have to deal with the
loss of most of its income and the knowledge that its deadly ways hastened
that loss.

Nope, the original email implied that there was a mutual agreement to join up
with Saudi's, which is patently false and has no proofThe stock price surged
that day due to the Saudi's and was an unwelcome addition to the failed taking

refrain from implying anything other than that,ok.If falsehoods get spread they

[EVDL] Tesla...Can you imagine what could have happened?

2018-10-18 Thread Lawrence Winiarski via EV

Musk was just last month trying to sell it to the Saudi's..in a deal that
allegedly fell through
.Now with them killing a Washington Post Journalist and Saudi Arabian princes
looking more like the mafia than anelectric car savior
I think Tesla and Elon Musk might have nearly destroyed the Tesla brand had
they been successful,
Something they should be thanking their lucky stars over

Re: [EVDL] Why I Won't Buy a Tesla, Edison-Tesla Deja Vu [Free Supercharging!]

2018-10-18 Thread Gail Lucas via EV
Mark, I agree 100%. Twenty years ago when I was doing "show and tell"
with my Citicars and conversions I could only dream that a car like the
Tesla would appear and revolutionize the whole EV industry. The EV1
looked promising but we all know what happened to it. I have ridden in a
Tesla and understand why people love it, plus the safety is outstanding.
Only thing I could possibly complain about was the lack of a handle over
to door to pull myself in.

true:

- Tesla is having enough problems keeping up with demand for its current

- Tesla’s appearance and impact in the market, and what they’ve accomplished

IMHO, we’ve passed the tipping point for EVs, and Tesla gets much of the credit

that is like 11 cents a kilowatt.

Paul, something seems amiss in those numbers. I have to assume 75kwh
for "75kw". The battery capacity of a Model 3 LR is about 75kwh so you
can never put that much into it. Most SuperCharges start from 10-20%
and most are terminated by 80%. You almost never fully charge at a
SuperCharger because the charge rate drops so much as you near full. If
you are following a chain of SuperChargers, your time is wasted by
charging to near the top if it is not needed to reach the next
SuperCharger. So, your typical SuperCharger charge on a 3LR is about
60% of battery capacity or less. No more than about 50 kwh.

At the end of a SuperCharge session, your car can report how much energy
has been taken on.

autopilot features would be available six months in advance to people who
ordered the full self-driving version of the electric cars.

REUTERS: Tesla Inc Chief Executive Officer Elon Musk said a new chip that
improves autopilot features would be available in about six months in all of
the company's new production electric cars.

In a series of tweets http://bit.ly/2QRIzAt, Musk said ..."~6 months before
it is in all new production cars. No change to sensors. This is simple
replacement of the Autopilot computer. Will be done free of charge for those
who ordered full self-driving."

Musk also tweeted that the new chip would improve the performance of Tesla's
Autopilot between 500 percent and 2000 percent.

He said the installation of the chip would be priced at US$5,000 for those
who did not order full self-driving.

Tesla's autopilot is a driver assistance system that handles some driving
tasks and allows drivers to take their hands off the wheel. Tesla says
drivers are supposed to keep their hands on the wheel at all times when
using the system.

210Km/h RÜCKWÄRTS | Der Weltrekord! | Daniel Abt
]

Over the past few weeks, Schaeffler has been letting German race driver
Daniel Abt play with their crazy new all-electric vehicle: an Audi RS3
equipped with a battery pack and 4 Formula E electric motors in order to
create an 880 kW all-electric racing car.

Now the driver has taken the world record for speed in reverse gear at 210
km/h.

As we previously reported, the German engineering and manufacturing group
was already familiar with the Formula E motor through its involvement with
Audi’s Formula E team.

But they went to a whole new level by putting four of them in a single car,
each of which provides a power output of 220 kW.

It is also equipped with two battery packs with an overall capacity of 64
kWh for a modest range, but it’s enough for Schaeffler to perform its tests
and blow away any driver or passenger.

Over the past few weeks, they have partnered with Daniel Abt, a German race
driver competing in Formula E, to test the vehicle.

Last month, he did what he called ‘the hottest donut ever’ with the
all-electric vehicle.

Now he attempted to break the world record for speed in reverse gear at 210
km/h.

Here you can watch the impressive video of the record (German):

Here are some specs that Schaeffler released about the vehicle:

Motors from the Abt Schaeffler FE01 Formula E racing car (season II)
Integration of four electric motors with a power output of 220 kW each
(Pmax)
Overall power output of 880 kW (approx. 1,200 PS)
MGU with 320 Nm of peak torque
From 0 to 200 km/h in less than 7 seconds
Selective wheel drive
Battery capacity: 64 kWh
Concept and overall vehicle design: Schaeffler Technologies
Overall design and manufacturing of the gearbox: Schaeffler Engineering
Vehicle design: Schaeffler Technologies & ABT Sportsline
Motor and gearbox efficiency of approx. 95 percent under full-load
conditions

Harley-Davidson says it will release five electric vehicles between 2019 and

The iconic American company confirms its e-bikes will be released in New

followers of the legendary brand would react to its latest product.

Greg Ogg, an alumnus of the Auckland chapter of the Harley Owners Group

riders and an "emerging riders" category that includes retired people and a
growing number of women.

"I can't see the outlaws grasping e-bikes with both hands, to be honest,"
Ogg says.

He thinks the company might have more luck with social and emerging riders,
who he's picking might buy the e-bike as a second vehicle.

hour (95.6 km/h) in four seconds thanks to the lack of gears and instant
torque. Its range on one charge was around 100km - similar to NZ's
home-grown Ubco.

While the acceleration might be impressive, another HOG enthusiast, Auckland
man Kevin McIntyre, says noise is important to hardcore bikers, leaving the
silent-running LiveWire with zero appeal.

Stats NZ says 27,646 e-bikes and e-scooters were imported in the year to
June 2018, a big jump on the 11,424 brought into the country in 2016.

Bikes International MD Craig Robertson - who bills his company as NZ's
largest bike importer - says e-bikes are rising fast.

While his company is not in line to sell Harley's e-bike, he says it could
do well given that there is a blizzard of no-name brands on the market.
Consumers are looking for brands they can trust, and resellers for
manufacturers they know will hold true to warranties, he says.

Harley hasn't released tech specs and pricing for its most basic e-bike yet.
Robertson says basic models sell for around $1800, with the sweet spot being
around $3500 to $4500. Top-of-the-line models sell for up to $17,000.

Why is Harley Davidson moving into e-bikes? ...

My car says I can supercharge for 8 and change it’s less than $9 for 75kw so
that is like 11 cents a kilowatt.
