This is how you do a battery-powered classic car: using new bodies to build
a car with the same power as the original

A company out of the West Midlands, England is building completely new MGBs
with electric drivetrains for the modern age, combining the timeless styling
of the classic roadster with technology that looks toward the future,
Hemmings reports.

This is the way you do an EV: you take a classic body style, build it out of
completely new components so purists don’t get angry at you, and you power
it with an electric motor that puts out the same horsepower as the original.

This is the work of RBW Classic Electric Cars, which has just put the
finishing touches on its MGB/E. “Our aim is to make these great classic cars
better for the modern age, and to do that, we have been fortunate to be
supported by great companies who share the same ethos,” says managing
director Peter Swain.

The companies that support this project are Zytek, which makes the motors;
and British Motor Heritage, which supplies the bodies and has been building
brand-new MGB body shells for enthusiasts since 1988.

Zytek is a division of Continental AG, which also supplies Formula E racers
with their electrical drivetrains. The motor it’s put into the MGB/E makes
94 horsepower, almost identical to the power of the original. Torque has
been significantly increased, however; at 167 lb-ft it helps the light
sports car rocket to 96 km/h from zero in only 8.0 seconds, and onto a top
speed of 170 km/h.

Range is only about 250 kilometres, but that should be more than enough for
a fun drive through the countryside (if you live close to it already, that
is).

The interior is standard MGB, except the gearshift has been replaced with a
rotary dial, and the Smiths gauges have been swapped out for a digital
readout which looks quite handsome (and it will actually work).

Cost is unsurprisingly high for a bespoke EV, at £99,600 pounds (about
$167,000), and they’re only building 30 of them. For the record, you can get
a real MGB for under $10,000, and a base Tesla Model 3 for $45,600. You can
keep your Tesla, we’ll take plan (MG)B.

The firm is also working on a Jaguar XKSS and C-Type EV, which both come in
at a bargain compared to the genuine article: £180,000 (~$300,000) and
£150,000 (~$252,000), respectively.

Electric conversions are increasingly gaining traction in the classic car
world, and the trend shows no signs of stopping anytime soon. Especially in
the case of popular but really slow classics like the original Beetle or, in
this case, the Fiat 500 in its cute Giardiniera wagon bodystyle.

The electric powertrain conversion was a collaboration between Icon and
Stealth EV, giving the little Fiat around 100hp to play with, which is
almost three times the power it originally had. The increased performance is
then combined with 120 miles (190 km) of driving range, which is more than
enough for city driving.

Icon also replaced all the weatherstripping and glass seals, added
insulation and generally eliminated all the rattles and squeaks you’ve come
to expect from a tiny Italian car of this era. Combined with the simple but
stylish and surprisingly roomy interior, Icon’s 500 Giardiniera is arguably
one of the coolest cars they ever made.

It’s a win-win combo, as the classic design married to a zero-emissions
powertrain creates a car that’s much, much better than it was before. Let
Jonathan Ward take you for a tour around his latest creation on the video
that follows.

[EVDL] LA traffic torture-tests Tesla 'Mad Max' mode (v)

Tesla Autopilot ‘Mad Max’ mode gets torture tested in LA traffic

]

Tesla’s “Mad Max” mode for Navigate on Autopilot might be capable of
suggesting assertive lane changes, but when it’s faced with some of
America’s most aggressive drivers, the driver-assist system still seems to
be far too civilized and polite. This was shown recently in a torture test
featuring a Tesla Model 3 in the middle of LA traffic.

When Elon Musk first teased Mad Max mode as a lane change setting for
Autopilot, he noted that Tesla was initially thinking of adding an even more
aggressive lane change setting called “LA Freeway.” Poking fun at the
behavior of motorists in the area, Musk lightly stated that the “LA Freeway”
speed based lane change setting was abandoned because it was simply “too
loco.” A video depicting Mad Max mode’s behavior in actual LA traffic all
but proves Elon Musk’s point.

Tesla Model 3 owner Joey Gil opted to test how his electric car behaved and
reacted to LA traffic with Mad Max mode enabled. As could be seen in the
Model 3 owner’s video, Navigate on Autopilot does suggest rather assertive
lane changes. Compared to other drivers in LA traffic, though Autopilot was
noticeably tame in comparison. Since the Mad Max setting still initiates
lane changes only when there is a safe distance from another vehicle, the
Model 3 ended up being cut off repeatedly by other motorists. This was
particularly evident when the Model 3 owner was in a section of an
interchange.

Tesla’s focus on safety is particularly evident in the current behavior of
Navigate on Autopilot’s Mad Max mode [
https://www.teslarati.com/tesla-elon-musk-autopilot-mad-max-blind-spot-threshold-software-v9-update/
]. While Autopilot is a convenience feature, after all, it is also one of
the electric cars’ most notable safety systems. This was outlined recently
by the company’s findings in its Vehicle Safety Report for Q3, which
revealed that one accident or crash-like event is registered by the company
for every 3.34 million miles driven while Autopilot is engaged. Without
Autopilot engaged, Tesla recorded one accident or crash-like event for every
1.92 million miles driven.

That said, it should also be noted that both Navigate on Autopilot and Mad
Max mode are still in their first iterations. Thus, both features would
likely be more refined with the company’s upcoming software updates. With
this in mind, an improved Mad Max mode that can handle LA traffic in an
assertive and safe manner would likely be rolled out in the future.
Considering that Tesla is still in the process of refining Navigate on
Autopilot, though, the current iteration of Mad Max mode seems to be just
right.

Ultimately, Navigate on Autopilot and Mad Max mode could be an excellent way
for Tesla to refine the first features of its Full Self-Driving suite, which
the electric car maker appears to be focusing on with the development of its
homegrown silicon chip. During the third quarter earnings call, Tesla’s
Director of AI Andrej Karpathy mentioned that the rollout of Hardware 3,
which is expected to begin in 2019, should result in notable improvements
for Autopilot.

“The team is incredibly excited about the upcoming upgrade for the Autopilot
computer. This upgrade allows us to not just run the current neural networks
faster. But more importantly, it will allow us to deploy much larger,
computationally more expensive networks to the fleet. We are currently at a
place where we’ve trained large neural networks that work very well, but we
are not able to deploy them to the fleet due to computational constraints,”
he said.

I disassembled 67 boxes of batteries and not one box had corrosive damage.
However, all the paint was intake. Thanks, for the info on aluminum. I was
planning on using some larger NiCad with a solar system. I will use steel for

My experience is that the potassium hydroxide electolyte is highly
corrosive to aluminum. If it gets on the aluminum, it corrodes it.

Potassium hydroxide doesn't seem to bother steel, however. That is the
reverse of the effect of the sulfuric acid electrolyte in lead-acid
batteries.

It's too bad you couldn't find a good home that could put these
batteries back to work. But congratulations for doing the right thing on
recycling them!

Good point; perhaps the real cost savings isn't the radio itself, but
that its absence allows them to cut corners (and cost) elsewhere on
EMI measures?

That said, my conversion doesn't need shielded conductors or a shield
around the controller in order for AM to be perfectly usable, so I'm

eliminate AM capability to "hide" their cost saving measures?
Commercial EVs pretty much always have the controller in an aluminum
enclosure, so it should be largely shielded for "free"; I doubt we'll
see controllers in plastic boxes very soon ;^>

That's been my experience as well. The AM radio in my LeCar EV
conversion works. It has a classic ADC series motor, Curtis 1231C
controller, and normal non-shielded wiring. There is some noise on
weak AM stations, but they still work.

Now, if the modern factory EVs are using much faster switching edges
in their controllers, there could be a lot more noise.

2018-11-09 Thread Tom Keenan via EV
I have a 2013 Leaf, and the AM radio works fine. Same with my old 2005 Prius.
I use the AM radio on a daily basis during my commute to work. Not sure if it
is perhaps an issue with certain radio suppliers/car manufacturers?

My experience is that the potassium hydroxide electolyte is highly
corrosive to aluminum. If it gets on the aluminum, it corrodes it.

Potassium hydroxide doesn't seem to bother steel, however. That is the
reverse of the effect of the sulfuric acid electrolyte in lead-acid
batteries.

I am sending the batteries to Recyclers of America. They pay for
shipping. I am paying a $0.75 per pound recycling fee. Not low cost
for 1500 Lb of batteries.

It's too bad you couldn't find a good home that could put these
batteries back to work. But congratulations for doing the right thing on
recycling them!

Wow, at one time I would have drooled all over these. In fact I bought a
couple hundred surpluss BB600 myself and used them in both my EVs. I'm afraid I
am lithium spoiled now. The flooded NiCads took too much maintenance and were
quite messy. Also, I learned not to put them in an aluminum box :)

Can you share details on the logistics of sending them to the recyclers? I
still have some dead ones laying around I need to properly dispose of some day.

I have approximately 1100 NiCad cells. I purchased them about 10 years ago as
military surplus. They were used in helicopters. The specifications are: Saft
Model No. KO 14KH-B-1. 11 Amp-Hrs. Size: 2.25" W X 5.25" H, and 1" D. If
anyone needs these batteries and are willing to pay shipping, you can have
them. If not, I am shipping them to the recyclers next week. In addition, I
have the battery links. Specifications: 1.5" L X 0.5 " W. Ctr - Ctr hole
spacing: 1" Holes dia: 3/16". The links are Ni plate Cu. If anyone needs
these links, I will sell them for the price of cooper.

If radiated, it will cause problems not only for your own car; but will
also wipe out AM in the car next to it!

Our Prius has an AM radio, though it has a "tin ear" -- poor weak signal
reception. This has been a problem for me on long trips. FM stations
fade in and out as you drive, but especially at night, you can listen to
the same AM station for your entire drive.

Just a few weeks back, Maruti Suzuki [
https://www.motoroids.com/maruti-suzuki/
] had announced their new plan to test electric vehicles on the Indian roads
[
https://www.motoroids.com/news/maruti-suzuki-flags-off-electric-vehicles-for-field-testing/
]. They put out a fleet of over 50 cars, to go through various driving
conditions are roads have to offer. These cars are developed by the Suzuki
Corporation in Japan and assembled here at the company’s plant in Gurgaon. A
big thanks to our reader, Kym KH Kongor, for sending us these images. We see
two of these electric vehicles roaming on the highway bearing HR registered
temporary number plates.

Maruti has a vision of launch EV’s in the Indian market by the year 2020, as
a part of which this fleet testing of vehicles began. Based on the WagonR [
https://www.motoroids.com/maruti-suzuki/maruti-suzuki-wagon-r-1-0/
] hatchback, these EVs have been roaming with no camouflage at all.
Moreover, stickers on every side of the car indicate this is an all-electric
vehicle. The design of the B-pillar on the vehicle too is rather
interesting, a different design approach has been taken instead of the usual
blacked out treatment. The rear gets rather tine tail-lamps, mounted on the
lower end of the car. Also seen on the side is a normal fuel cap which would
probably hold the power port of the car.

The cars as mentioned above would undergo intensive testing on Indian soil
to see if they can withstand the Indian conditions. Once satisfied with the
results, Maruti plans to offer all-electric vehicles in the Indian market as
soon as 2020. This could turn out to be a trendsetting movement, considering
Maruti is the largest car seller in the Indian market. Many other companies
could follow the leader and introduce electric vehicles in the market,
making our cities cleaner and save the environment as well. EV’s are a
brilliant solution for cities like Delhi where pollution levels have reached
a deadly level.

Skibsted Ideation, the company behind Biomega – the Danish brand known for
its high-end electric bicycles – will launch its first 4-wheel Electric
Vehicle (EV) at CIIE in Shanghai on November 5th.

The concept car has been developed to take Biomega’s principles of social
innovation, design thinking and urban mobility and apply them to the
automotive industry. Biomega bikes are each named with a three-letter
abbreviation of a city that has inspired some elements of the design.

In line with its bicycle predecessors, this car will be named SIN, after the
contemporary urban sprawl of Singapore.

Says Biomega founder Jens Martin Skibsted, co-chair of World Economic
Forum’s think tank on entrepreneurship and vice-chair of design2innovate
(the Danish Design Cluster):

“We’ve been focused on urban mobility since the 90s. Biomega has always been
about creating a paradigm shift in the way society imagines transportation.
We feel that we are in an extremely strong position to design an EV that
represents the frontier of the new mobility. ”

The 4-door SIN CUV (crossover utility vehicle) is designed with 4
independent [e-motor] engines and 4 independent seats with extra legroom.
Stripped back to maximize space, this EV uses minimal components and
lightweight materials; its low weight improves its range, minimizing battery
consumption.

The car has been built using state-of-the-art lightweight composites,
including a world-first use of modular carbon fibre for high volume
automotive production. This innovative manufacturing process, carried out
with partners in the UK and Germany, will ensure a low-cost, low-weight
solution.

The final production vehicle will be ready for the market in 2021-2023, with
adjusted specifications, which may vary from those projected. Price will be
approximately € 20.000. Release Date 2021 – 2023 Max.
