(Bloomberg Opinion) -- Last year, the world’s consumers bought more than 2
million electric vehicles. By 2025, they’ll be buying 10 million; by 2040,
56 million, according to BloombergNEF’s new long-term Electric Vehicle
Outlook. The report looks at how this fleet will transform transportation as
China’s 421,000 electric buses join those millions of personal EVs. As the
expanding electric fleet drives electricity demand up, it will also erode
demand for millions of barrels of oil. Globally, more than half of all new
car sales will be electric by 2040, but that figure varies by region. In
China, the world’s largest auto market, that figure will be closer to 70
percent; it’s nearly the same in Europe. The U.S. is the relative laggard,
at just under 60 percent.

My colleagues’ analysis includes some near-term indicators of the market, in
addition to their long-term projection of consumer adoption of EVs. One of
the clearest ones is manufacturer investment in production capacity.
BloombergNEF tracks more than $100 billion in investment between just four
automakers — Volkswagen AG, Hyundai Kia Automotive Group, Chongqing Changan
Automobile Co Ltd. and Daimler AG — with VW alone planning more than $50
billion.

Automakers must be producing something with all that manufacturing
capability, of course. BloombergNEF also tracks planned model releases. By
2025, manufacturers will offer nearly 400 EV models. VW will debut 80 on its
own, which is fitting given that it is also investing the most in EV
manufacturing. Fellow German automaker Bayerische Motoren Werke AG will
launch 47.

China looms large in any analysis of the future of the global auto market.
It’s already a larger market on its own than either North America or Europe.
More important, though, it has also been the main source of global growth in
auto demand in the past two decades. Consumers worldwide bought 47.5 million
new cars in 2001, and 81.4 million last year. China’s growth in that time,
to 28 million 2.4 million, comprised 76 percent of the world’s increase in
demand.

Re: [EVDL] EVLN: Messerschmitt KR200 Electric is in the works

2019-05-18 Thread Sean Korb via EV
I love it love it love it and... the rear steer is an abominable
notion as the first test rider will strongly attest. But if they
build it in numbers you could use the shell over a nicely engineered
front steer piece, maybe off of a Dwarf racecar. Anything that goes
over 3MPH is doomed with rear steer. Cheap though.

[EVDL] Tesla-S Update Prompted by Hong_Kong.cn Parking Lot Fire

Tesla Model S Catches Fire In Hong Kong Parking Lot Prompting Battery Update

A Tesla Model S reportedly caught fire in a parking lot in Hong Kong on
Sunday and the car manufacturer has already rolled out an over-the-air
battery software update to try and prevent similar incidents in the future.

Reuters reports that the Model S 85 was parked in the city’s San Po Kong
District for roughly 30 minutes before it caught fire. Three explosions were
reportedly captured on CCTV footage and the car was not plugged in at the
time of the fire.

Local authorities are said to be investigating the case but that hasn’t
stopped Tesla itself getting the jump and already taking action, Tech Crunch
reports.

On Tuesday, the Calfironian electric car manufacturer announced that it is
introducing a software update to change battery charge and thermal
management settings in the Model S and Model X. Tesla has yet to determine
the cause of the fire in Hong Kong and doesn’t yet know if there are any
issues with the battery pack.

“We currently have well over half a million vehicles on the road, which is
more than double the number that we had at the beginning of last year, and
Tesla’s team of battery experts uses that data to thoroughly investigate
incidents that occur and understand the root cause,” the company said in a
statement. “Although fire incidents involving Tesla vehicles are already
extremely rare and our cars are 10 times less likely to experience a fire
than a gas car, we believe the right number of incidents to aspire to is
zero.”

“As we continue our investigation of the root cause, out of an abundance of
caution, we are revising charge and thermal management settings on Model S
and Model X vehicles via an over-the-air software update that will begin
rolling out today, to help further protect the battery and improve battery
longevity,” Tesla confirmed.

The update will not be made available to the Tesla Model 3.

The fire in Hong Kong comes just a few weeks after a Model S was filmed
exploding while parked in a Shanghai parking lot.

Sometimes you need scrambled eggs. And with that thought, today at the
Overland Expo in Flagstaff, AZ, Rivian announced a major accessory for its
electric pickup: A camp kitchen. The unit slides out from the Rivian R1T’s
so-called gear tunnel that lives between the bed and cab. The kitchen
includes storage and a stove that’s powered by the R1T’s 180kWh battery
pack.

This kitchen unit is the first significant concept Rivian has unveiled for
the pickup’s unusual gear tunnel. This space provides another locked storage
compartment for the pickup — but why have it all, many asked when it was
revealed? And now, with this kitchen unit, Rivian is responding to the
questions. It seems Rivian wants to make its vehicles the center of an
ecosystem of add-ons. The company already revealed racks, vehicle-mounted
tents and even a flashlight that hides in the side of the driver’s door.
Expect more camping and outdoor gear as Rivian cements its brand image
around adventurers.

Rivian is positioning its products for a particular lifestyle. Think
Patagonia-wearing, Range Rover-driving, outdoorsy types or at least those
who aspire to have that image. It’s a smart play, and so far, Rivian has
stayed true to this image. All of its advertisements, social media posts,
and appearances make it clear that Rivian is carefully aligning its brand
image.

Trucks and SUVs are generally marketed to workman and families. TV
commercials feature dusty men hauling bails of hay and women unloading
groceries and closing the rear tailgate with her foot. But not Rivian.

So far Rivian has shown its products in the backwoods, running trails and
sitting next to campfires. The people in the commercials are on an
adventure, wearing coats by The North Face and sleeping in REI tents. With
the kitchen from today’s announcements, they can pull a kitchen out of their
pickup and make some coffee.

Rivian tells TechCrunch this is just a concept, but the company intends to
bring this unit to production. There are likely to be other units for the
gear tunnel. I, for one, would love to have a slide-out dog washing and
drying station because there’s nothing worse than putting a muddy dog in a
truck.

Looks more like a CUV than the current Bolt

The Chevy Bolt EV has been kicking around for a couple years now, but GM has
sold enough EVs to start the scale-down on federal tax credits — and the
car's price hasn't changed. We haven't seen the most recent sales figures,
as GM now reports quarterly, but Bolt sales have been in a slow but fairly
steady decline. GM, though, is committed to EVs, and has shown an electric
Cadillac concept and confirmed an electric pickup. It has also said it will
build another crossover alongside the Bolt, which is rumored to be called
the Bolt EUV (as a trademark dug up by GM Authority could suggest), and is
almost certainly what you see in the photos caught by our spy photographer,
above.

This definitely looks more like a legitimate crossover than the Bolt (which
Chevy also, questionably, refers to as a crossover), but beyond its more
upright stance, it's hard to tell what this thing actually looks like under
that thick cladding and camouflage. We expect it to be larger than the
current Bolt, but it's hard to tell by how much until some of the camo comes
off. We can see that there's no exhaust, and the video below confirms it
runs silently as expected for an electric car.

GM is developing a new BEV platform, called BEV3, but meanwhile plans to use
the current Bolt's BEV2 platform for two new crossovers, as stated in a
presentation in late 2017. GM is also investing big bucks in its Lake Orion
plant to build at least one of those. Connecting the dots, this could very
well be the EV we're seeing here. It'll be interesting to see if this ends
up cannibalizing sales of the original Bolt. We wouldn't be surprised if GM
has thought the same thing, and offers this as a half-step to a replacement
until it starts building EVs on its BEV3 platform in coming years. We don't
have official word yet, but based on intel and GM's general timeline, we
could likely see a production version of the vehicle you see in these spy
photos come late next year.

I believe the under car air speed is also increased. Or, maybe
increased turbulence. Anyway, I think it is worse than just exposing
more tire.

I think that is true. Keeping the car low is a way to reduce the amount
of air and turbulence underneath. Of course, a smooth bottom would help;
but that costs too much.

Big fat tires with lots of tread have lots of wind resistance. And, the
tops of the tires are moving forward at *double* the speed of the car!

Paul MacReady (of Aerovironment) talked a lot about auto aerodynamics
when he was designing the Impact (aka GM EV1). Things I recall:

- Aero testing is in wind tunnels, with car and tires not moving.
- The roughness of the bottom of the car is usually ignored.
- Spinning tires have much more drag than stationary ones.
- Most cars are more aerodynamic in reverse.

So, he designed the EV1 with a smooth bottom, with wheel wells optimized
as "ducts" to minimize turbulence, and a shape that actually *was*
aerodynamic (instead of what some stylist thinks will "look" aerodynamic).

If you need more ground clearance sometimes, maybe adjustable air bags
are an answer?

A rep’s comment from 2014 is hardly evidence in 2019 that would make such a
criticism fair.

I believe the under car air speed is also increased. Or, maybe
increased turbulence. Anyway, I think it is worse than just exposing
more tire.

I'd expect any vehicle modification that increases the frontal area of a
vehicle, while holding all other factors constant, to result in increased
drag and increased energy consumption (and reduced range). Simply raising a
vehicle increases frontal area by virtue of the tires being more exposed.
The efficiency differences are magnified at higher speeds. At low speeds it
may be hard to notice a difference.

Do you have a suggestion on how to contact them? I found their customer
support form, but it won't submit because there isn't a nissan dealer in
Seattle. Also it's limited to 300 chars which doesn't allow saying much.

This is pretty close to something I would buy. I see it's available for
37100 euro in france, where it probably could be purchased and brought
to the US (I know this once was possible).

Some people will balk at this, but my limiting factor is I need more
range - about 250 miles. I would like to own just one vehicle that I
can take hiking, skiing, and haul building materials, etc. These are
activities where it is not practical to rent a vehicle. Otherwise I
would need two vehicles, one for hauling things locally and one for
longer distances. But even with two vehicles, there isn't currently
anything affordable that will go 250 miles on a charge and have enough
ground clearance for forest service roads (can the Bolt suspension be
modified without compromising range?). The e-nv200 would work really
well, I think.

I'll let them know.

800.647.7261 option 7. This is where you can call Monday through Friday to
lodge any kind of complaint. While the e-NV200 is on the website and in Europe
it is not for N. America.
https://www.nissanusa.com/vehicles/future-concept/e-nv200-zero-emissions-small-van.html
Here it is but not available. Such a shame.
This is the link where you can see the concept. If you complain formally to
Nissan maybe they will bring this useful vehicle to our shores. Lawrence Rhodes

That's not so surprising. IMO, the brightest future of production EVs is in
Western Europe and Asia.

In Europe, 4 nations have already stated that they plan to reduce, restrict,
or eliminate ICEVs in favor of EVs by 2025, 2030, or 2040. Some have fairly
aggressive subsidy or incentive programs. (Certain oil-wealthy people in
the US don't approve of our EV tax credit. Anybody want to place a bet on
how much longer it'll last?)

China has announced a future ICEV ban, though I don't think they've set a
deadline; someone please correct me if that's wrong. China is the elephant
in the GM boardroom, an emerging vehicle market growth area for them and all
the other major automakers. For better or worse, unlike CARB in the 1990s,
China's government doesn't blink. You do it their way, or you don't do
business in China.

So China and part of Europe will most likely require EVs. Last I heard,
California might; maybe someone who's been following that can update me. Or
maybe congress or the EPA will smack CARB down, take away their legal right
to require stricter emissions standards.

The automakers will build EVs for EV markets. If we're lucky, the rest of
us will get what's left over, unless they can sell it more profitably
elsewhere.

That's probably not all bad, though. It might open the gates to serious
competition from second- and third-tier automakers. The fuel crunch of the
early 1970s gave Japanese automakers and their small, high-MPG cars a solid
foothold in the US. This time, maybe we'll get to see what Chinese and/or
Indian automakers can do with EVs.
