Re: [EVDL] Tesla - car company from scratch

Why do we start with an ICE roller and convert it to EV?  Why don't we start by machining some wheels on the lathe, some square tubing for frame rails, start hand laying fiberglass for a body.. It's almost always easier (faster/cheaper) to start with even a flawed initial implementation than

Why shouldn't we encourage more law compliance by having any / all self driving cars obey the law? Instead, we're conceding that the laws are ineffective and need to be changed, if we're adjusting the self-driving cars to be consistent law-breakers like every other driver out there. We

There are 400w panels out that are roughly 7'x3.5'  So a rather reasonable 7'x7' trailer could produce 800w, which is a good amount of power - but not nearly enough. Assuming they're mounted flat, that's 800w at high noon, and less at every other part of the day.  We could expect something

Two items to share. My first "EV" is an electric conversion lawn tractor.  It came to me with a bad engine. I put in a 2kwh Chevy Volt battery, contactor, and electric motor. At the time, it cost me about what a new gas lawn tractor would have, and it mows for about 20 minutes before the

I think it is about shifting the consumption (like a DVR shifts Prime Time TV) If instead of net-metering being 1:1 you have a sell at $.05 and a buy at $.10 then the 10kwh scenario is a net loss of $.50 not "net zero" If you have such a scenario, the battery can be used to shift your

I can't tell you about the Leaf packs, but when I built my electric lawn tractor, I wound up with a used Volt pack from HybridAutoCenter http://hybridautocenter.com/HAC4/ Specifically the 48v/47ah Volt pack -

Michael, Hard to believe you made this post 2 years ago - I've been holding on to a few of these for a plan of my own. I've now cut the grass half a dozen times with my electric tractor conversion. I've wanted to convert something bigger for ages, but I've had to settle for starting small

Sounds like they may not be compliant with FCC Part 15 "unintentional radiators" - is their AM interference limited to their own car?  What does it do to the car next to them? And as a ham radio operator, dealing with the various forms of impulse and heterodyne and so forth noise already

On the topic of a hybrid install.. on something with enough space (perhaps not a Mustang), how about a boring old 4x4 transfercase. Leave the ICE configuration alone. Attach your electric motor either directly, or via the driveshaft, to the front output of the transfer case. Leave it in
