Though it was initially revealed at the 2009 Frankfurt Motor Show as a concept, the production version never came out. By the time Audi decided to launch it, the second generation of the R8 was due. Hence the production version of the R8 e-tron will make its debut in the body of a second generation R8. Design changes over the regular R8 are minimal. It gets a new front bumper, new front bonnet with a large air inlet, new design black alloy wheels in different sizes, new colour scheme and a new rear bumper and diffuser with an e-tron logo. The production version of the R8 e-tron will be powered by two electric motors with torque vectoring capabilities placed at the rear of the car. They will be sending power to the rear wheels. Power will be sourced from a lithium-ion battery placed at the centre tunnel behind the passenger cell. The electric motors produce 456 bhp and 920.6 Nm of torque. The supercar accelerates from a stand still to a 100 kmph in 3.9 seconds and it goes on to a top speed of 250 kmph. The top speed falls to 210 kmph when low rolling resistance tires are used for maximum efficiency. The range of the vehicle is around 450 kms. The car was launched at the 2015 Geneva Motor Show and will go on sale by the end of the year. It will rival the top end variant of the Tesla Model S and the BMW i8, which is a hybrid. Audi are also planning to launch a full electric SUV that will be based on the Q7 platform but will have a unique design. The SUV was previewed at the 2015 Frankfurt Motor Show. It will go on sale in 2017 and will rival the Tesla Model X and a few other upcoming electric SUVs.
