An EV is incredibly simple in comparison to an ice

They’re better for the environment, reduce our reliance on foreign oil, and let’s face it: gas prices aren’t getting any cheaper. “Electric cars are quiet and clean. People like not having to go to the gas station,” said Edmunds.com green car expert John O’Dell, who drives a Nissan Leaf. Plus, the price of electricity is stable, while gasoline prices fluctuate wildly. While a gas-powered car has to rev up to hit its potential, electric cars “are peppy right from the start. You have full power from the moment you step on the accelerator,” O’Dell said. And then there’s torque. Usually designed with a 500- to 1,000-pound battery installed under the seat, electric cars have a low center of gravity that “basically glues the car to the road,” resulting in a car that’s thrilling to drive, corners well and gets off the line super-fast. Not to mention the lack of maintenance. An electric car is incredibly simple in comparison to an internal combustion engine. Forget oil changes, replacing spark plugs and more -- after owning the Leaf for a couple of years, O’Dell said he has spent just an estimated $80 in maintenance for a cabin air filter. Electric cars also appeal to people who admire their state-of-the-art technology and that in the long run, they save money, said John Gartner, associate director in energy practices for Navigant Research. “They’re really nice cars to drive,” he said. “For electric cars to really take off, people just need to get behind the wheel. Once someone test drives an electric car, they’re sold.” New electric cars for 2014: - BMW introduces its first dedicated electric vehicle in the i3. The sporty/stubby four-door, five-seater gets 80 miles to a charge and is a compact city car starting at $41,350. The battery takes three hours to charge from a 220-volt household plug. There’s a spacious interior with a dashboard covered in leather, plastic and eucalyptus wood. The iDrive push-button start/stop is placed in the center console in what looks like a high-resolution iPad display. A single-speed transmission enables the i3 to spring from zero to 60 in seven seconds. An optional gas engine extends driving range to 300 miles ...
