Yep. And "just" lower-end EVs are *exactly* what we need to put more people
into EVs, as the pent-up demand in the luxury segment becomes sated and then
saturated.

But Tesla doesn't make an economy EV. Not even close.

Other automakers do, for Europe. How many of them the US will ever see is a
big question. The Dacia Spring is one example. In France you can buy a
Spring for under 16,000 euros (less than US$17,000) after the French subsidy
. That's actually cheaper than an ICEV Renault Twingo.

It has less range than a Tesla, but that's OK. It's a city car. Europe has
outstanding trains for long distance travel.

Some of the Chinese EV manufacturers are also starting to enter the EU
market with low cost EVs. I see this as analagous to what Toyota and Nissan
did in the US with their small, efficient ICEVs in the mid-1970s. We know
how THAT turned out.

I keep hearing that Tesla might introduce a smaller, cheaper EV. That would
open up EVs to a wider range of drivers, but would also cut into their
profits. It'll be interesting to see which of those is more important to
them, or rather to Musk.

No offense, but that strikes me as a rather US-centric statement. I assure
you that in Europe, the traditional automakers are serious about building
and selling EVs - in Europe.

They seem less concerned about the US, probably because they need all they
can make for the EU. Another possible reason is that they foresee likely
future US political trends that will favor ICEVs and disfavor EVs.

Well, I don't consider a Toyota Corolla to be competing with a Cadillac
Seville.
Those lower cost EV's aren't really competition.  They are just the
lower end of the vehicle spectrum.
And those other EV's aren't being produced in enough volume to be much
competition either.
