Mena Massoud, star of Disney’s live-action version of Aladdin, filed a
product liability suit against Tesla, saying a crash that occurred on
Hollywood Boulevard in Los Angeles last year resulted from defects in his
top-of-the-line Model 3 electric sedan.

The complaint, filed in Los Angeles County Superior Court on May 30,
describes an unusual accident that occurred while Massoud was driving in
low-speed evening traffic on September 20, 2018, a day after he got the
$85,643.51 car. The actor felt a sudden “pop” as he moved into the right
lane. At that point, the Model 3’s brakes engaged, “the steering wheel
locked, the front-passenger wheel crumpled and ejected from the car, and the
car itself skidded onto the sidewalk and crashed into a tree,” according to
the suit, filed on Massoud’s behalf by lawyer Kevin Javidzad.

Tesla did not immediately respond to a request for comment on the matter.

Massoud suffered unspecified injuries in the crash and his car “was deemed a
total loss,” according to the suit. There’s no sign of a pothole in the
road, based on photos taken shortly after the accident. Additionally, a
review of the car’s event data recorder, or EDR, found no evidence that
Massoud was at fault for the crash, according to the complaint.

"Upon review of the EDR records, even Massoud's insurance carrier concluded
that Massoud was not ‘at-fault’ for the incident," the suit said.
