This niche brand will have both two-wheelers and three-wheelers in its portfolio, and the first product is expected to roll out by 2020. In a recent interview, Rajiv Bajaj, MD, Bajaj Auto revealed plans to enter electric vehicle market space with the aim of ‘doing a Tesla in the two-wheeler space.’ While there is no shortage of budget electric scooters in the Indian market, there aren’t any products in the premium market space. Bajaj might attempt to fill this void with its new Urbanite products. India may have been slow in embracing electric vehicles so far, but the government is serious about changing this. The government is currently in process of preparing policies, which should give incentives for manufacturers and buyers of electric vehicles. As of now, there are two interesting electric vehicles expected to be launched in India over the next year - the S340 smart scooter from Ather Energy, and the T6X motorcycle from Tork Motorcycles. Even TVS is expected to enter this segment with a new electric scooter, next year.
