It uses deep learning software / Toyota ] The Toyota Motor Show is known in international circles as a show that introduces new technologies, the odd sports car and wacky, offbeat anime-inspired concept cars. In fact, some of my overseas colleagues come to Tokyo just to see those manga-like concept cars. As is happening at every other motor show so far this year, literally every carmaker is pushing their vision of future electric vehicles, autonomous driving, A.I. and connectivity. But while those themes are strong at Tokyo as well, this year things are a little different. This time, as I walked around the show venue at Tokyo Big Site, I realized that Japanese manufacturers have gotten serious with design. They’ve finally injected some sexiness into their future exteriors. The fact that Japanese designers have finally been given some latitude to style cars that are fun, sexy and eye-catching is what stood out ... Honda injected some sex appeal back into its line-up with the EV Sports concept. Based on the Urban EV Concept seen at the Frankfurt Motor Show, the EV Sports looks much lower slung with flowing rear-wheel-drive proportions, and with its low center of gravity promises an exhilarating driving experience. I particularly liked the coupe’s combination of simplicity and retro meets future sports car. But more than anything, it was refreshing to see Honda trying to incorporate some raw sexiness back into its design. Although to be honest, this coupe also was light on details and only mentioned a basic EV powertrain ... But while I thought this coupe would be the highlight of the Toyota stand, that role was usurped by the Concept i with A.I. technology and scissor-like gull-wing doors. Electrically powered, this 4-passenger vehicle incorporates deep learning software that can read your mind! Well, nearly. It will read your breathing rate and speech patterns as well as eye movements to tell your state of alertness and what you might want to do. It also offers autonomous driving features in which the steering wheel folds away ... Every carmaker might have been shining a spotlight on its EV and autonomous driving technologies but the sexy lines and curves adorning this year’s concept cars really helped to spruce up the stands and inject some style into Japan’s future automotive design. Just hope they can keep the momentum going through the recent scandals with Nissan, Subaru and Kobe Steel.
