Selfdrive.ae become the first online car rental portal to offer electric
cars, the company announced on Sunday.

As part of the initiative, the company is offering Renault Zoe electric
vehicles at an introductory price of AED 5 per hour ($1.36) with a minimum
billing cycle of 24 hours and a range of 250 kilometres per day.

The vehicles can be rented through selfdrive.ae, and are available to local
residents, visitors, expats and corporate clients. The vehicles can be
charged at the almost 100 charging stations that have been installed around
the emirate by the Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA).

“We are thankful to the Road and Transport Authority (RTA) and DEWA for
collaborating to incentivise electric cars by allowing free charging across
DEWA car charging stations, [and providing] free parking,” said Soham Shah,
the founder and director of Pinewoods Technology Services Dubai, the holding
company of Selfdrive.ae.

“Selfdrive.ae is proud to take first steps towards making electric cars more
accessible and affordable to the masses and to create an ecosystem for
people to explore the new age of mobility, by introducing new avenues in
smart mobility and car share technology,” he added.

In September, Dubai announced a number of incentives to encourage people to
drive electric vehicles, which range from free public parking to exemptions
from tolls and discounts on registration, and said that charging stations
will be free-of-cost by the end of 2019.
