When you view another folder, the previous folder's changes are synced back. This is the easiest way - much easier than quitting evolution. I make a habit of changing folders every now and then just for this purpose (I tend to abort evolution with bonobo-slay or ctrl-c a lot when debugging

After a rocky migration from 1.4, my IMAP folders are forever Loading (or Scanning...) without displaying, and outbound messages sit in my Outbox without making it to the SMTP server. Settings are the same as for 1.4 except I put them in from scratch and have yet to be prompted for my password.
