Can anyone suggest what I should do? Bill, I'm not certain this is going to solve your problem, but here's something to try. In the Fedora Evolution packages we have an old patch called evolution-1.4.4-ldap-x86_64-hack.patch. This patch predates my maintainership. I'm not sure where it came from or what problem it fixes, but it sounds like it might be related to what you're seeing. Apply the attached patch to both evolution-data-server and evolution.
