Present Setup 3 Exch 2K servers E1, E2 and E3 in one domain. We have 5 Exch 5.5 servers and both E5.5 and E2k servers are in same Exch site. All 5.5 servers are running SP4 and all E2k servers running SP2. E1 is the first E2K server in the site. RUS is run on this E1 server for the domain these E2K servers are located.
My Issue: In AD users, I create 3 users in one container, with one mailbox each in those 3 E2K servers. After few minutes, the "email address" column shows the email address for user1. For other 2 users, this column remains empty. It doesn't matter how long I wait, the other 2 users doesn't get this column filled up. But all 3 users have got the email addresses generated for CCMAIL, MS, SMTP, X400 and X500 when looked inside the user properties. Then I look up the Mailbox rights and it is "Self" for all 3 users. Ok then I make sure these 3 users are replicated and seen in GAL. Then I send a message to all these 3 users. After this the user1 gets his mailbox created in store and also the mailbox rights shows fine with all other inherited permissions. For the other 2 users, the message sent results in NDR. Also the mailbox rights stays same with only "self" in it. I have been trying to trouble shoot this by creating new mailboxes and placing it in one of these 3 stores and at various stages the NDR happens to mailboxes on one or two server and for one it will work. IT is erratic and sometimes it works for one server and suddenly it doesn't. But what I have noticed so far with my multiple new mailbox testing is, whenever the mailbox doesn't get the "E-Mail Address" column in AD Users, there will be a NDR if mail is sent to that mailbox whereas if that column has the smtp address, it will not result in NDR and it will go ahead and create the mailbox in store when email is sent. Funny thing is "Email addresses" under user properties has the correct smtp address generated - only the "E-Mail Address" column is empty... I suspected may be RUS is not doing it's job for the mailboxes. So I even created an additional RUS for the same domain that runs on E2 server.
