We're running 13.6GB on the main box with 24GB total for our site[1].
The
279meg box belongs to the HMFIC himself so that ain't changing soon.
There's
no telling how large the psts's are though[3].

[1] I don't EVEN want to know what the rest of the organization is
looking
like[2]. [2] Admin is showing 5.0 servers out there still...

[3] We had a tradition of lousy customer service[4], so moving people
from
pst's is not yet a battle worth fighting[5]. [4] Getting that boat
turned
around has been a slow process, but we've made about 170 of the 180
degree
turn ... YEA!!! [5] Nice thing about working in the military is that
users
are, generally speaking, use to having to take care of themselves.
(i.e. if
they didn't back up their own pst's, they know, their on their own)

Also:
Does anybody know if issues when the IS get's really large or if a

No issues yet.

Hi all,

New to the group however I've been watching for some time.

This is in no way a flame posting, however I seek information regarding
the clustering of Exchange 2000 servers.

Could anyone point out any good reference points - be they web or book?
I've searched high and low on various search engines but just get sites
full of mumbo-jumbo that is not relevant.

Joe

RE: Exchange clustering

Thanks to all for your input. It is most appreciated :-)

I'm actually researching it both for myself and for an idea based around
running exchange and doing some wild and wacky things with it.

The system is being designed to take some serious load. I think the team
are under the impression that to handle a huge amount of users and
transactions more than one server is needed. Is this a logical approach
or are they being muppets?

Cheers

RE: public schools, gov e-mail

2001-10-25 Thread Joe D. Llewelyn

With regard to SendMail, IIRC it records logs regarding the transaction
(IP's, To/From etc) but does not keep the body of the message.

It's designed to be quick and efficient - having it log every single
tx/rx would be inefficient, but it is possible to enable it.

Rgds..

I'd see what FIOA has to say about it, although States have different
(stricter) laws than the feds in many cases. But the real question is
what
constitutes an official record. When I was a fed (2 years ago), most
email was not considered an official record - and the messages that were
were supposed to be printed and saved...

Don't know if that helps a whit, but there it is.

I'm wondering if anyone here who has experience with public school
systems
or other government bodies would grant an off-the-record opinion. Are
e-mail
messages either received from the public, sent to the public or sent
internally a matter of public record? ... and yes, I realize each
state/locality might have somewhat different laws.

Here's the deal: The Madison (WI) School Board a few weeks ago voted to
restrict saying the Pledge of Allegiance and singing the words to the
National Anthem in order to comply with a state law... they did wise up
and
reverse the decision a week later.
http://www.jsonline.com/news/state/oct01/pledge14101301a.asp?format=prin
t
http://www.jsonline.com/news/state/oct01/pledgea101501.asp?format=print

The district received approximately 22,000 e-mails regarding the issue.
A
citizen made a public records request for those e-mails and was told a
week
later a majority of the messages had been deleted.
http://wisconsinstatejournal.com/local/7043.html

I know the district uses a POP3 system (probably Sendmail), so there is
no
message store or transaction log to recover them from. I imagine 22,000
text
messages in a .pst would fit on a Zip disk, it could become unwieldy to
manage the inbox if they were not moved into another folder.

So, does anyone have an opinion about this incident in regards to the
open
records laws? Does Sendmail have logging that could maintain a copy of
every
message that routes through the system? What options are there for
Exchange
systems to continually maintain all messages? Can Exmerge be scripted to
run
a scheduled task to remove or copy old messages? How many days max can
Exchange maintain deleted items (assuming unlimited drive space)?

Another good one is to let your IS and/or logfile space run out very
rapidly
from a mail loop (use blat or the reskit simulation tools for the loop).
See if you really can get that server back up and running with some
extra
disks within your SLA period the mail loop cleared up before it goes
down
again!

Thanks to everyone and MSKB[1], I now have backups that I KNOW are good.

Next step now, is to learn how to fix Exchange. I know there are a few
million ways to break Exchange, but what would be the best for learning
the
repair tools in a lab environment?

The hardware stuff 'should' be straight-forward. Break it - ID it -
Repair/
Replace/ Restore - Reboot. The software and DB corruption would need to
be
more careful to avoid getting into a 'Restore is only option' situation.

Any Ideas?

Thanks

only problem has been lately is that our store has exceeded tape
capacity,
and we have to click on OK the next morning to finish up the backup on
the
next tape.

sorry, no haiku.

2001-10-29 Thread Joe D. Llewelyn

Hi all,

Just a few questions that I have.. Would appreciate input :-)

Firstly, is it unusual for the Exchange server to keep looking at the
floppy drive?

A few of the servers here do - and it's only since installing Exchange
2k. Seems to be only once every 5 minutes or so, and I can only imagine
it's just looking around for something it can't find or perhaps
something it would like to find.

Secondly, during the weekend the server just stopped responding.
Exchange was allowing me to work from two machines in the house, but
when I tried to log in from one of the other 8, it failed. NT would not
allow me in for a start, then when it got past that problem (Trying to
find the profile on the server) Exchange wanted verification of my
user/pass/domain. It refused to let me in even then. A couple of reboots
and all was well, but it caused some concern. Does this happen to anyone
else?

Thanks in advance,

Joe!

Oddly enough I'm hardly getting any mail either - Usually get about 150+
per
day but had only 5 or 6 yesterday.

Really sorry to do this guys, but I can't tell if this list is just 'not
happening' or if Internet mail is 'dead' somewhere (a change was made on
the
weekend!)

Two really good pieces of news today: 'Jedi knight' is officially
recognised
as a religion in the UK (well it has been given a filing number by the
people @ the statistics bureau) as 10,000 people put it down as their
'practiced faith' in the census earlier on this year and.and there
are
only 34 and a bit weeks to Glastonbury 2002 - yeee

RE: OT - Luke save the Queen

2001-10-29 Thread Joe D. Llewelyn

Heard about the Jedi thing two months ago.

On the radio whilst I was fiddling with my Exchange server.

So now it's sort-of relevant to the topic. Take it to a 1-2-1 email
session kidz.

I read it in the Independentwhich reported that Jedi Knight was
given a
filing number. Are you calling the beloved national canon a liar?

 smart@ss

There are even some people here that can check out rumours before
repeating them to thousands of people on a mailing list.

Give the boy a million points for observation and a kick in the pants

being a smart arse :)

Here is the relevancy: Lots of techies like Star Wars and lots are cool
enough to know what Glastonbury is, lots of techies hang out on this
listmake the connection.
