Disaster Recovery

2001-10-05 Thread Amir El Aziq

In light of the recent WTC tragedy, I was wondering if anyone on the list
had lost exchange servers, or were forced into DR by the situation?

How did you handle business continuity, and was there anything that you
learnt that would change your strategy going forward? How long did it take
you to get things back online?

I'm guessing that there are admins out there that were in this situation
that had to get mail going in order to keep the (global) enterprise
functioning.

Scenario:
5 users in the organisation.
1 server for file/print/email
Full Online Exchange backup every night.
Exchange BLB every night also.
Data backup every night.
All backups complete in 3 hours, on 1 tape.

Please explain to me why doing a BLB is bad in this scenario.

Thats not what I asked. As an enterprise level architect I appreciate the

There is no drawback in doing BLB to the situation I described below. Or am

Try doing a BLB with several hundred or several thousand users on an
Exchange server and you can see why a BLB is BAD. It will take far more
time and tons more tape than necessary.

You obviously have an exception here with only 5 users, but then one would
almost ask why you are running Exchange in the first place with so few
 users.

That was a look it up first before you ask. Otherwise you are bound to
get
some comments like, I'm not your personal support center, but if you
really
want to know, call PSS and ask them. For only $250 they'll be most happy
to
send you a fax detailing how this would be accomplished.

Re: Off Topic - Running .bat's or .exe's at log off ?

2001-09-26 Thread Amir El Aziq

Maybe they're using Windows 9x? On second thoughts, nobody actually logs
off of that - they just crash out...

Seriously, we run scripts to move files that users have placed on their
desktop to their home drive, and replace them with shortcuts - thus lowering
the profile size.

Why don't you use Group Policies to lock down the

2001-09-19 Thread Amir El Aziq

Adil mentions that he has 10MB free on the C: drive. Sounds like a
small office
installation with all data on the server C: drive (I could be wrong).

1. Check/Move Information store to a partition with more space.
2. Move the page file to another partition with more space.
3. Remove unnecessary software from the C: drive to free up space.
4. Try to have at least 50MB free on the C: drive ALWAYS (assuming
   the system is installed there)

My thinking was the loop, if present, would be stopped by the machine
not sending. This way, the user wouldn't lose any valid incoming mail.

Sounds like a mail loop. Put limits on your mailboxes. Restrict send

at nn megabytes. That will stop it for the moment, if that's what it
is, and buy you some time to react. Now go get a good
 online backup of
your server to get rid of all the 5mb log files. (You have a whole
bunch of them, right? I'm just taking a guess here). Go
 find out who
has a rule that forwards mail to an off-site destination. It will be
the person who's complaining that they can't send mail. Or
 the person
with the 12gb mailbox. Let us know more details if this
 doesn't help.

2001-09-19 Thread Amir El Aziq

If you have a permanent connection to the Internet with this office/server -
you MUST get a firewall. Corporate data is now at risk 24x7. *When* you
get a firewall, you can set up a VPN.

We have 3 sites; A, B and C. Site A is connected to site B with a slow line.
Site B is connected to site C with a faster line. Between site A B and B
C X.400 and Directory Replication Connectors are set up. A new fast line is
going to connect site A to site C. The idea is to connect site A to site C
with a X.400 and Directory Replication Connector and remove the connectors
between site A B. What is the best way to do this? Shall I first shut down
or delete the connectors between site A B, and then set up the connectors
between A en C or shall I do it the other way around? What will the impact
be when I chose the last option (i.e. will I see two sites C?) Any help
would be appreciated.

Thanks in advance,
