Re: RE: Problem with accessing a PF

2002-05-23 Thread Jerzy Setmajer

They might be temporarily loosing the network connection which would cause them no
longer to be correctly authenticated. OWA probably has a solid connection to that
server. But re-logging to the NT domain should fix that. Are the users that
experience this problem in the same network segment?
Is this particular PF on a different server then the rest of PF's they can access?

Just throwing in a bone :=)

Nope. No replication of PFs and no affinity.

 Also no age limits set.

I have what started as one, but is now up to four users who
will lose access to some of our public folders at seemingly
  random intervals.

This has happened to the original user about three times in
the last month to six weeks. The user has reviewer
permission to the folder through a distribution list, and
will still be listed in the DL, but cannot see the contents
of the folder. Also, he does not get the error message about
not having permission, just, Unable to display the folder.

He can, however, read the subfolders he has permission to
that are underneath this folder. (and to which he has the
  exact same rights!)

The only temporary fix we had found was to remove the user
from the DL, wait for replication to complete, then re-add
his account to the DL, but lately that hasn't been working
either. Also, giving him reviewer rights by name to the
  folder does not work.

To throw one last curve in, the users can access these
  folders through OWA.

So far, this has happened to three users on the same folder,
and a fourth user on a different folder.

Any solutions, suggestions or WAGs would be most appreciated.

  Thanks.

 Hi Gurus

I have a problem with my OWA login. The environment is Exchange 5.5 (2
servers, 1 site) and we have OWA running on 1 server. Recently we added
another exchange server to be purely the SMTP and OWA server. This server
runs on windows 2000, IIS 5 and it is a member server. I have chosen
 Anonymous and Basic authentication. \

When I try this from office, it works fine. When we try from outside, I am
able to the initial logon box, then I get the Exchange logon page. After
entering the mailbox name it comes out with another login box. Here when we
type the password it again pops with the same box. After 3 attempts you get
a blank page. In my office, the same screens appear and it authenticates to
 the inbox.

I am desperate to get a solution for this.

 Thanks

 Kumar

Re: RE: OT Upgrade question

2002-05-22 Thread Jerzy Setmajer

You should look into the difference in cost for upgrade to e2k versus purchase of a
new license for e2k. Eventually you will have to upgrade as MS will stop supporting
E5.5
The deadline for buying an e2k upgrade is 07/31/2002. After that you'll be paying the
full price.
Talk to your MS contact to find out the difference in upgrade versus whole thing.
That alone might be all that you need in your argument.

E2K upgrade question

2002-05-15 Thread Jerzy Setmajer

Not sure what we are missing so I thought I would ask the group.
Test environment:
Exchange 5.5 sp4
E2K SP2
2 way trust
We used E2K ADC to populate AD. The W2K users created cannot access the mailboxes in
E5.5
When we move the mailboxes to E2K the NT users can access the maibox on the E2K server
but the W2K users still cannot.
What could be wrong?
Humbly requesting imput.

Hi All,

I am having a problem with ADC connection agreement, I
think, here. There is no option to move mailbox under
exchange tasks for users after initial replication, after
creating a connection agreement. Here is my situation: -1 NT
domain and 1 Win 2k domain (2 win2k sp2 server- dc)
-performed Netdiag-on DC and member server -performed dcdiag-
on DC and member server -Installed ADC on DC (also global
catalog server) -Forestprep - on DC -Domainprep - on DC
-Setup ADC with one way connection agreement(did not allow
two way agreement-due to 2 domains?) -install E2k Sp2 on
member server, applied available hot fix.
- install ESM on DC ( technet suggested to install ESM on the
machine from where you are trying to move mailbox)

I did not use ADMT because the users were already created
manually by my Network Admin. earlier (not inside the users
container but created another container on the same level as
users). Therefore I pointed to the same container in the
connection agreement also(CA properties--from exchange).

The only available tasks are Delete Email addresses and
enable IM in Exchange task wizard. Is it necessary to use ADMT ?

What am I missing here?

Any help would be really appreciated.

Thanks

The definition I find for SMTP 550 is that the user is unknown or the
 account does not exist.

However, if I send from hotmail or yahoo as a test, the mail gets to the
user no problems. Access denied does not sound like an error with locating
the user name/account by their recieving server. it sounds more like they
are not accepting incoming mail from us for some reason. I do not see our
domain blacklisted in ORBS or anything similair using Sam Spade to check
 their databases.

just use the CD without the need for outlook personal folder configurations,

My point is that having a cert can't hurt you.
It might help you put your foot in a door that could be closed otherwise.

2002-05-01 Thread Jerzy Setmajer

I agree,
Make a list of technical limitations based on your environment (hardware) and send it
to legal/HR so they can convert it to something only they will understand :=)

Items you want to have some sort of limits on:
Mailbox Max Size
Internal Message max Size
External Message max Size
Retention Time
Extensions blocked.

What you also could include is:
Outline to a Public Folder Usage Policy (with limits and aging criteria)
Distribution List Naming rules (so you don't wind up creating 5 different DL's for the
same group of people)

Or none of the above :=)

This only looks so simple
Read the warning on the bottom of this q article.
it says WARNING: When you click to select the Propagate these properties to all
subfolders check box, and then click Apply, any existing permissions in the
subfolders are lost.

He has thousands of Public Folders, this means that current user permissions will be
lost on all of them and will be replaced with whatever permissions he propagates. Not
a pretty picture.

RE: Host Unreachable

2002-03-27 Thread Jerzy Setmajer

Did you try putting an actual e-mail through the telnet to that server?
If not - telnet to the remote server on port 25
You should get a 220 - server ready
Type in: helo yourdomain.com
Server will reply with a 250 ok
Type in: mail from: [EMAIL PROTECTED]
You will get another 250
Type in: rcpt to: [EMAIL PROTECTED]
You should get another 250
Type in: DATA and press enter (it will tell you how to terminate the
input - usually a period on a line of its own)
Type in the test message body - whatever you feel like - and terminate the
input as directed (again - probably a period on a line of it's own)
You should get another 250 or some other confirmation response.

If you get any errors along the way, perhaps it will give you a clue on
what the problem might be.

I could not find it on the Microsoft Web, but in TechNet - if you search
for MS Exchange Internet Protocols - you will find a troubleshooting
guide that explains all this and more

Jerzy

RE: backing up custom recipients?

2002-03-27 Thread Jerzy Setmajer

You are correct - the message is confusing. The Subject refers to CR's
but the body to Hidden Receipients (which could be mailboxes ). But if
it's just the CR's then restoring IS will not get them back.

RE: How Organizational Forms Work?

2002-03-21 Thread Jerzy Setmajer

Well, first - do not give disgruntled employees permission to post
Organizational forms. Second, password protect all the forms before you
post. Keep the password list safe so you can unlock the form.
Usually, the developers want to password protect their own forms - don't
let them. You need to be in control.
The password protection on forms is not the greatest, but it keeps most of
the home grown wanna be's at bay. And if you happen to run into a REAL
hacker and he has access to your network, Outlook forms will be the least
of your problems.

RE: How Organizational Forms Work?

2002-03-20 Thread Jerzy Setmajer

From my experience, if Outlook forms are put together by a responsible
person with basic knowledge of vbscripting, the forms can simplify a lot
of tasks and be used in variety of productive ways.

I do not believe they have a high impact on processing other than being
usually larger than regular mail. You can replicate Organizational Forms
folder across multiple servers to improve performance, just remember that
any updates will not be instantaneous for everyone. DO NOT allow your
form developer to have access to post forms by him/herself.
Always test the form before posting. If you have different clients
throughout your organization - for example Outlook97/98/2000 - test the
form on all versions.

Also based on past experience, hide the forms instead of DELETING them and
keep it hidden for at least 3 months. Nothing worse than finding out that
they still need it an having to restore just to get it back because no
one seems to have a copy of it.

Good luck
Jerzy

WAN replication of Exchange Dbase

2002-03-01 Thread Jerzy Setmajer

Does anyone know of a solution that would allow for store replication
accross WAN?
I have 2 data centers in different states and need to create a no delay
failover in case of a disaster where basicaly the secondary location takes
over 'on the fly' or at least withing few minutes if primary location
fails.
