I went ahead and just wrote a script that exports users info from AD and
creates a csv file that is suitable for import to Exchange 5.5

Thanks Chris

Depends on what 'don't have communication' means, but under most
interpretations... No. Perhaps some additional information could be
helpful in obtaining a suitable answer.

Then pursue the second option...or the rules are too complex and try
simplifying your rule.

UserA assigns UserB delegate permissions with meeting request

Now... anyone sending a meeting request to UserA gets an NDR re: cannot
deliver to UserB as the recipient name is not recognized. Even though
UserB is no longer a listed delegate for UserA.

Seems as though Exch is orphaning delegates and perhaps I will have to
actually remove Delegate rights prior to removing exch accounts.

Has anyone seen this or found a nice happy way to deal with this?

Try this and see if it works.

Go to your Exchange Administrator
Right click on the server and do properties
Go to the Advanced tab
Click on Consistency Adjuster
Under Private Information Store, check Remove unknown user
accounts Under Filter choose All inconsistencies Then click OK.

I have had this issue in the past and after I ran this the users quit
calling. If it works let me know so I will be positive it fixes the
issue.

I looked at the time zone settings and unchecked the Automatically

still receive some emails coming from another smtp server that show that
they were sent 1 hour later than they were.

Problem: I have an iis smtp server sending an email when a form is

my exchange server which is also gmt -6:00. when I receive the mail the
sent column shows 1 hour later than it was received.

Make sure that you don't have a different version of the form in your
Personal Forms Library. It could be that you have published it in two
locations by mistake (which is very easy to do since the default
location is
always Personal Forms Library). If that's the case, your Outlook will
never
look at the copy in Org Forms Library. It'll always read the one in
your
Personal Forms Library.

Distribution Lists

2001-11-13 Thread MS Exchange Mailing List

Greetings again all...

Some comments from your suggestions on my Distribution Lists question:

-Mail merge with Word does not send HTML mail. It converts it to plain
text. I don't know if it will convert if sent as an attachment, but I
don't want to send an attachment.
-I need to import addresses from an external database (Access). I don't
see how to import names to a distribution list in the GAL or elsewhere
from sources like these. Only see things like importing from Outlook
Express.
-Copy and paste into the BCC is a good idea, but I anticipate my list
growing. What if I can't paste all those. I also looked at Blat and it
doesn't seem to have external database file access.

Thanks for you attention.

2001-11-12 Thread MS Exchange Mailing List

ha- i finally tricked someone into reading my posts. Could someone
help me with the following problem?

Ok can someone explain what I missed.

I did a move mailbox upgrade to E2k. I had rights to send as this
public folder email address and it carried over in the upgrade. Now I
would like to assign someone else the rights to send as this public
folder. By default the public folders are not 'mail enabled' yet they
still have the previous assigned smtp address from Ex5.5. So when I
mail enable them, It assigns a new smtp of [EMAIL PROTECTED] Also
after mail enable it still does not show the original smtp address in
Email Address tab in Active Directory Users Computers.

There has to be a way around deleting and remaking the folders? doesn't
there?

Any ideas or links to help info would be appreciated

RE: Computer Associates

2001-11-02 Thread MS Exchange Mailing List

I disagree with the majority. I have had great results with CA
products, especially Arcserve Exchange Agent. Tech Support has been a
blessing in disguise. They have walked me through any problems that I
have had. I would rate them among the best I've worked with.

One more thing, I am a big fat LIAR.
imho- ArcServe Sucks

Three years ago when I started my current job the company used nothing
but
CA products, Innoculan, Arcserve etc... Everyone was complaining that
they

that I
was not able to get to work so I thought that this presented a
tremendous
opportunity to show my new employer what a smart guy I was. Well, it
proved
to show just how stupid I was. I could not get any of it to work
correctly.
CA Technical support was terrible, worse then terrible.

There is no sign of there products anywhere now at any one of our 52

nothing has changed at CA.

CA contacted me, concerned about posts I've made regarding their
products.
In the past it has not been their policy to participate in these forums
because vendors aren't always treated very well. They are reconsidering
this policy.

William Lefkovics, MCSE, A+, ExchangeMVP

Here is the list of ACTUAL quotes I assembled for them in response to
their
sudden concern (I did not include names, but these are from public
forums):

When someone made a comment like this:

-We have bought Arcserve 2000 w/ the backup agent for Exchange to
backup
our Exchange Server and have been having nothing but problems. - Saul,
October 10, 2001

The ACTUAL replies were as follows:

-Do you really want us to go for the entire day about how HORRIBLE of a
product Jerkserv is/ NTBACK2k [1] is 1000 times better. Return the
Jerkserv and install Backup Exec

-The best thing to do with CA products, is to place them in the
dumpster,
where they belong.

-We have been using Arcserve 2000 for awhile now and I would have to
say
that it DOES SUCK.

-why do people buy that program? I have never heard anyone say anything
nice about it?

-Don't get started on that crappy as*s piece of software.

Other comments about CA software, by those who actually use it:

-Let me clue you in on something. I've got a good friend at
CA - he told me that they have a bad time getting their E2K servers
backed
up
using their product

-ArcCrap is exactly that... Unreliable, no support, a pain in the
arse,
breaks more than it fixes... Shall I go on?

-Arcserve does an excellent job of backup things up, it's
downfall is the ability to restore things

-Arcserve and anything is not a good choice.

-I agree on Arcserve, which is the lowliest of backup products anyway.

-Arcserve and a dumpster are a perfect fit.

-There's only so much overtime one man can do, and my quota's
fully taken by using AarghServe

-Run away! Fast! Seriously. There are very few here who like working
with
ANY CA products even if they inherit them, much less ask for them.

-you can switch to arcserve if your current backup is too fast for you

-Running Innoculan was somewhat akin to flogging myself.

-I've only purchased a few products from CA and the support was
absolutely horrid. I have had other system administrators with the same
experience. Most of the products themselves were very good until CA
buys the company, then the support seems to go down the tubes.

-I can't seem to get ARCServe to back up my (WINNT 4.0 SP6) Exchange
server
5.5 SP2 data files.

-EjaculateIT has worked well for us as a desktop antivirus solution for
our
office, but for the Exchange Agent, I'd recommend hiring a tibetan monk
to
analyse code segments manually for viral patterns than ever recommend
this
piece of crap clearly written by laid off AOL programmers.

-The last time I remember any kind of success with ArcServe was when
Computer
Associates didn't own it and it was running on Novell. Ever since
Computer
Associates got involved, it has become unreliable garbage.

-Yes, although usually alot of things tend to not work after a CA
product
is
installed.

-When it comes time to update CA's stuff, maybe an alternative would be
in
order
here.

-in my short time in the IT industry InoculateIT 4.53 is the worst
piece of
software I have had the displeasure
to work with. Closely followed by Arcserve.

-I don't feel like playing with ArcServe**It right now.

-I just started a new job. they have this SQL server that is all hosed
up. I uninstall JarkServ and it all worked better : no more problems
go figure.

-Don't use

the info would be the way to go.

 Hi all

do you know of any Freeware telnet or similar product that will let me
to
automate the following in a batch file

 telnet ip
 login
 password
 change tu superuser mode
 run some commands
 logout from that server

the batch file should be run froma WindowsPc to telnet to a Unix
server.

RE: Disabling telnet sessions to ports 25, 110...

2001-10-23 Thread MS Exchange Mailing List

On the other hand, one could use a packet analyzer to search for a
specific payload on the dest ip addr src 25. If it matches the telnet
signature then it will trigger an alert to firewall to block the
offending src for a specified time.

Tools:
SNORT - network/host based intrusion detection (packet analyzer to
match the signature) $ 0
SNORTSAM - plugin to pass the alert to a CHECKPOINT FW-1 firewall $ 0
FW-1 $shitload

As for any other FW software, I do not have an answer.

Okay, let me try to kill this misconception once again. :-)

There is a protocol called Telnet, described in RFC-845 and RFC-855.
It describes a network teletype.

There is also a program called Telnet. It implements the protocol
described in RFC-845 and RFC-855.

The program called Telnet has a second mode of operation. If you
pass a
TCP port number as the second argument, instead of opening a Telnet
connection, it opens a raw TCP connection to the host specified by the
first
argument. This connection *IS NOT* the Telnet protocol. It is simply
one
end of a TCP stream. When operating in this mode, the program is
indistinguishable from any other TCP program -- such as an SMTP client.

When one speaks of telneting to port 25, they really mean, using
the
'Telnet' program to open a raw TCP connection to port 25.

You cannot block this, any more than you can block just Outlook
Express
version 5.00.2615.200 from connecting to TCP port 25.

  Sorry, folks. :-)

RE: Opinion on Backups

2001-10-18 Thread MS Exchange Mailing List

my 2 cents-

I have been using Arcserve for about 3 or 4 years now. During this time
I have run into different problems with the software, nothing major at
first. But, during the last year we upgraded to Arcserve 2000. I say
upgrade, but it was a clean install just to note. Since that time we
have had nothing but problems. First thing, oh they forgot to mention
that when we upgraded our exchange agent it wouldn't work with E2k, so I
had to upgrade AGAIN to a later build of the agent when I went to E2k 6
months ago. From that time on I can count the successful backups on 1
hand made with Arcserve. (hooray for ntbackup!) The problems are quite
sporadic and damn near impossible to decipher.

On the other hand, I had restored my Exchange 5.5 box a couple of times
throughout the early period with 0 problems. I think Arcserve 6.x
products were OK, but I truly do not trust 2000. The problems I have
encountered have finally convinced me to switch to Backup Exec.

So if any of you want to give Arcserve 2000 a try, I will give you a
good deal !! Arcserve 2000 Enterprise 1-Oracle, 2-Sql, 4-Open File,
1-Exchange agent(s) Tape Library Option, Unlimited remote agents.

ArcWreckIT EjaculateIT - I found much humor in this, thank you!

I've been looking at Backup software for out NT/2000/Exchange servers.
Right now we run Veritas Backup Exec but because of the poor
 support (Pay
support sucks) and horriable Customer Service (They didn't have any
information on file about my company or purchases). I've
 decided to choose
another brand of tape software. What I'd like to know is what you're
opinion is on the best software (Other then BE) to use with NT/2000
 including Exchange support.

Dear Ms. E.M. List,

www.abuse.net would be a good starting point for you. However, most of
the
time spammers spoof and/or randomly generate the sending domain name
and/or
IP. So, blocking a certain list won't be 100% effective. If you want
to
block spam, you may be better off investing in a content filtering
package.
See FAQ 4.1 (I think).

E2k upgrade problems (free/busy organizational forms)

server has been up and functioning for about a week now. I finally was
content and decided to pull the old server. I did follow the Q article
on removing the first exchange server. Email function is fine.

The problem is that users are unable to view the free/busy data and the
Organizational forms from the old server did not copy to the new server.
Is there anyway to start the old server and get the forms? And how or
what needs to be done to get free/busy data to show.
