RE: Restricting use of MSN Messenger

2002-02-01 Thread Mike Scott

Instant messenger programs have a habit of using things like port 80,
that you probably don't want to block. Most firewall vendors will have
technotes for blocking the commonest IM programs though. Try yours.

Will blocking the ports being used by MSN Messenger at the firewall
work?

If you are using MSN through proxy then see logs file and block the
IP's/web sites used by MSN Messenger. I have blocked MSN once by doing
this.

My firewall notes say blocking tcp/1863 will foil the MSN Messenger.

Note that AOL IM, newer versions of ICQ, and Yahoo IM all use arbitrary
ports on dedicated servers, so you have to block IP addresses instead.
Fortunately, you can lookup the IP addresses via DNS (assuming your firewall
supports such things).

This is not strictly to do with exchange, but I would like to run it
past all you techies out there !
I need to stop a user running MSN Messenger Excite messenger
services. I have forced IE to use a proxy, but this does not stop the
messenger services. User has W2K workstation. Network is NT4,SP6a No
firewall in place ! (So that is not an option!) Does anyone know of a policy
that would work ??? Thanks in advance...

RE: Restricting use of MSN Messenger

2002-01-30 Thread King, John

Maybe you should just talk with him and save yourself some work. If he
shouldn't be using it, then let him know. If that doesn't work, then why
the hell is he still employed with you.. If you restrict access and he just
comes into work one day to find it won't work any more, then he will be
confused/upset. I think it would be better to just tell him how it is..!
Either way you really should have a firewall in place. Internet connections
and corporate LANs make for a bad mix sometimes. Do it with Linux or *BSD,
that way it is FREE and Secure.. hehe

   Good luck, just my thoughts

Unfortunatley YES. I could take it away, but he is kinda part of the support
team and therefore needs to know the domain admin password which could be
used to override the local admin account!
