I just deployed 2013 and the order didn't matter. I just followed this http://www.msexchange.org/articles-tutorials/exchange-server-2013/migration- deployment/deploying-exchange-server-2013-part1.html

Jeff Brown says <http://exchangeserverpro.com/exchange-2013-installing-cumulative-updates/#c omment-153299> January 23, 2015 at 3:08 am Paul, you mention upgrading the Mailbox before the CAS. This is different from earlier versions of Exchange where you start at the CAS, then Hub, etc and mailbox last. Is there any official documentation on the server role order to install Exchange 2013 CUs? I'm having trouble finding any. No I can't find any "official" source for that online. <http://exchangeserverpro.com/exchange-2013-installing-cumulative-updates/?r eplytocom=153315#respond> Reply o Gareth Gudger says <http://exchangeserverpro.com/exchange-2013-installing-cumulative-updates/#c omment-153859> February 1, 2015 at 2:16 am If you run the upgrade on a multi-role server, you will see that Setup always upgrades the Mailbox role before the CAS role. I have a customer that is going to be installing Exchange 2013 CU13 soon. We're getting together documents and creating checksheets for the update. The customer insists that CU's get installed from "the outside in", meaning from the Edge Server towards the mailbox server. My memory says that you installed SP's and CU's in a different order: CAS, HUB, MAILBOX, EDGE. I can't find documentation that points to one, or the other, or really any order at all. So I'm asking the people who have a bit more experience with this. What say you? John Matteson.
